Karuna and Aurelie were friends. Then Aurelie went off and found the infernal armor of Ellicide and became the Evil Overlord Darkloft. Karuna is the only one who can stop her. But Karuna loves Aurelie, even now.

Luxaren Allure is a medium-sized RPG (12-20 hours) that follows Karuna and her allies as they explore the isles of Luxaren and confront a former friend who now wants nothing but destruction. This is a wlw (women who love women, lesbian romance, yuri, etc) game with an all female playable cast.

Also included are:

  • Title Screen Art, Face Portraits and Illustrations by M-3-1 (http://m-3-1.deviantart.com/)
  • Side View CTB Battles, with animated heroes and (semi)animated enemies!
  • New tilesets and battlers, made just for this game!
  • No random encounters. All enemies are visible on screen, and each triggers a different enemy party.
  • No RTP needed! Most resources are custom, and everything's included with the download.
  • A simple crafting system.
  • A short, character driven story that plays with the standard RPG formula.

Characters:

Karuna has been training with the School of the Unwavering Blade for years, and is considered the best choice for defeating the evil of Darkloft. She's serious, strong-headed, and confident, but her reasons for choosing to be a hero might not exactly be selfless...

Chisa is Karuna's self-proclaimed squire. She's timid but very strong, if a little naive. Her loyalty to Karuna is unquestionable.

A mage from the Naga clan, and one of the few of her kind that does not view humans with suspicion. Carefree and laid-back, she quickly finds herself fascinated with Karuna's quest and even more fascinated with Karuna's squire.

The great-granddaughter of the paladin hero Estes, Lynette is a well-balanced warrior from Rezael who has trained for years to master both the physical and magical arts to make up for the fact that she didn't inherit her family's holy magic powers.

Now known as Overlord Darkloft, the evil one who has placed the isles of Luxaren in dire peril. Karuna has so many questions for her. What will happen when they finally meet again?

Scripts used:
  • Yanfly's Ace Core Engine, Message, Menu, Equipment and Battle systems!
  • Kread-EX's Animated Battlers!
  • Fomar0153's Compatible Customisable ATB/Stamina Based Battle System!
  • Coelocanth's Item Crafting system!
  • NeonBlack's No AutoShadows

And a special thanks to Red Nova, LockeZ, Crystalgate, Archeia_Nessiah, GreatRedSpirit, and everyone else in the Rpgmaker.net forums for their fantastic suggestions, advice, and general help!

Redoing Assets for a Future Steam Release

I recently launched Weird and Unfortunate Things Are Happening on Steam (click here to see the Steam page) and it's been pretty successful, and I've already gotten people asking about getting some of my other games on Steam.

The problem with Luxaren Allure is that when I made it, I started with a mindset of how I made games back in the old RPG Maker 2k days: while the tilesets were all made for the project, the icons, sounds and animations had a lot of rips from other games, and it wasn't until I was over 50% done with the game that I even started properly tracking where some of the resources were from.

My first impulse was to remake the game in RPG Maker MZ, but after careful consideration, I've scrapped that idea, as what motivates me is making new games; I doubt I could spend the time needed to redo absolutely everything to run in MZ without getting massively burnt-out, and that would also delay Izrand for a long long time, which I'd like to avoid.

So instead I've decided to just revamp the VX Ace version for Steam, by redoing or replacing any resources that I don't know the source of. Unfortunately due to my poor labeling of what I used plus the fact that a lot of places where you could get VX Ace and older resources now being offline, I've had to replace more than I might otherwise have needed.

Most of the icons were from either Dragon Quest or from packs that might have had rips in them, so I've replaced all of them save for ones that were just modified Ace icons or that I made myself.

The sounds were a big hassle, as I originally mixed sounds I got from Freesound.org with several from other games, including Warcraft III and Starcraft and a couple from older RPGs. So unless I could positively identify and credit a sound's source, which was rare, I replaced it, tho I tried to find replacements that sound similar enough. I couldn't even track the source of the original cursor sounds, so I'm using Izrand's for that, which don't 100% sound the same but kinda "feel" in the right ballpark to me.

That leaves the animations, which is going to be a good deal of work, tho I've gotten about a third of them done already. Again, some from the original are rips and there are a lot of others that I don't know the source and can't find it with google reverse image search. Luckily, about halfway thru the game I started saving any new resources with the creators' name as part of the file name, which makes verifying and crediting those a snap, but the rest... oh boy.

Some of the offending animations have just been replaced by new ones drawn by me, some have been replaced by ones I made for Izrand, and some have been replaced by assets that I've bought or from free sites with clear credit/attribution licenses, but I've still got a ways to go.

You may ask: With so much being replaced, will this still feel like the same darn game, unity? I think it will. The tilesets, monsters, hero sprites, music etc are all the same, and I'm trying hard to keep the new assets very much in spirit of the original game. It's not perfect, and still feels like a bit of a mish-mash, but to be honest that's very true to the original project, with all those animations and sounds from very different sources XD;;;

That leaves the big question of: When will this Steam edition launch? I'm thinking somewhere between March and May of this year; I both need to get the rest of these animations done and I don't want it too soon since W&U launched on Steam only a little more than a week ago.

What's going to happen to the original version of Luxaren? It'll stay right here on RMN. You can still play it as-is without any of the Steam changes. I think it's best to preserve it in it's original form alongside with the new Steam version.

I apologize to people who have been patiently waiting for Izrand, as this pushes it back slightly further while I fiddle with this, but once I get an idea like this in my head, sometimes I have to do it all before I can move on.

Before I go, here's an awesome Valentine's artwork from Maki of Karuna and Aurelie! :D (click here to go to Maki's twitter!)

EDIT: Originally, I had posted an example of one the animations I failed to name correctly when I made the game. Later that very day, I just found the source: It was by LexusX, who I did indeed have in the credits, I just failed to name that resource correctly! So that's one mystery solved XD :D

oh man I've been playing it for an hour and a half now and I'm officially in love with the story too :D

I'm far too lazy to figure out how to script in RPG Maker, but this inspires me

I signed up for this website simply to say thank you to everyone involved in making this, this is amazing. Exactly what I've been looking for... I've only played the first 20 minutes and I'm in love with everything from the characters, to the art and soundtrack. Can't wait to unravel the story.

That's some high praise! :D
Unity , congratulation I am playing your game I love it, and I think you got the Misao´s nominations because you deserved it, I am a little retired girl 64 years old (another younger fan whahahaha), I did not use the maps of tidal and watery places once I discovered the fairy and bought the item, I could pass almost all, except one, it is behind a closed door, I have 2 days trying to pass and no way I am totally frustrate, I put the game from normal to very easy and almost reaching the exit of the cave, time ends and the wave push me out, help I want to cry, is there a map for this part?. Highly appreciate if you can help me I want to continue playing please.

The one behind the locked door is optional. You don't have to beat it to finish the dungeon. Sorry it's been giving you so much trouble ^^;; If you really want I can give you a map.
Unity, I didddddddddddddddddddd it, I am almost crazy, I drank a glass of water, take a deep breath and told to myself go ahead you can do it :-D and "it was easyyyyyy", thanks a lot anyway maybe I was running without think. Now I am going to keep killing monsters whahahahahahahahah. I am hapyyyyyyyy

Congrats! :DDDD I'm so glad you pulled it off! ^______^
Wow, I'm blown away, honestly. I just finished the game. I was absolutely dumbfounded when I realized how just about every thing was custom made. Absolutely astonishing. This is honestly one of the best rpgmaker games I've ever played, and it's the only one so far that's made me tear up. I finished it in about 13 hours, but I'm kind of a completionist, so I spent hours just walking around looking at stuff. One of my absolutely most favorite things, is that the game rewards people who like to explore. I'd walk off the normal path, and find treasure hidden everywhere.

Loved the story, all the characters, even the battles didn't seem repetitive or boring to me. Just overall, an amazing game, thanks to you and everyone who worked on this game. You guys are awesome. :)

Oh, and my favorite part was probable the Road to Hotenshin, with all the character backstories, fantastic job with those. :)

Thank you so much! I am super happy that you enjoyed it so much! :DDDDD I loved doing all those character backstories, too. Sooz helped me a lot with writing them and putting them together, so I want to give her a shout-out here ^_^
Jesus…I’ve been putting this off for SO long now, ugh…!

unity, you must want to kill me or something. 3 months later and no stinkin’ review yet but he’s perfectly able to review 6 games in under short notice. (I-I’m sorry!!!) Well, I’ll definitely try to shoot to not only finish this game this month but also give it a review as well.

Things…have been a little…“weird” and unfortunate things are happening lately over here on my end…so I haven’t had much time to do a lot… But hopefully this month will be a lot better to do some RMN related stuff…(well, hopefully).

- So hopefully no time like the present, right, lol?

It's fine, Addit! While I'm very interested to see what you think of the game and get a review from you, there's certainly no hurry. And even if something comes up and you can't do the review, please don't feel bad about it. I'm just happy that you gave the game a shot ^_^
Oh - I’m still planning on doin’ the review. Hey, when Addit adds something to his playlist – my god, he not only plays that said game to completion but he always manages to review it! There is no middle ground.

- But I’m glad that you can tolerate my laziness current predicament. It’s been a strannnnnge couple of months lately, but I definitely – definitely – wanna get this done this month. If I don’t, you have my permission to kick me in the knee.
Mmh, I was okay with this for a while but I have to say I had to put it down after the "there's only one bed" scene with Merel and Chisa. That was majorly screwed up and uncomfortable.

I don't think "majorly screwed up" are really the right words to use. I mean, it's yuri after all.

I can understand when you said uncomfortable, though. But like I said, it has pretty much been stated in the game's description on this game page that this is a yuri game, so you ought to have expected that.

Besides, the bed scene isn't explicit per se (it's not like actual cough***cough was shown). In fact, none of the yuri-related content in this game is majorly explicit.

I really don't understand what's screwed up about it. Nothing was forced, other options were presented, and Merel was asked not to do anything explicit. It was two ladies sharing a bed.

Not only that, there's also nothing sexual about it. It's lit just two women cuddling. Nothing more wholesome than that~

Yeah. Chisa had already been falling for Merel a good while since then. ^_^ When Chisa hesitates, Karuna mentions that she could share the bed with Merel if it made Chisa uncomfortable, and thinking about someone else sharing a bed with Merel gets Chisa a little jealous XD

I thought I made the important stuff clear in that scene. So I really am curious about what's bothering argh about that scene.

Given the lack of any substantial explanation, I think it's more argh's personal preference than anything with the scene itself, though screwed up was a really poor choice of words. Besides, it was made pretty clear both on the game page and in-game context about the themes, so I'm not sure what there was to complain about if it is indeed personal preference.

I can see how Merel looks kind of molesty, but I always figured if Chisa wasn't OK with her advances, Merel would be a grease spot on the road, whether by Chisa or by Karuna.
Not even, tbh. Persistent, yes, and defs like... starry eyed and filled with love at first sight, but never predatory, in my mind. More like an overly excited school girl than a creeper, y'know? It is a fine line, but I think unity kept it in that super innocent territory.

iirc she never says or does anything that's a big predator red flag! it's part of why i love merel/chisa so much ;__;
