Karuna and Aurelie were friends. Then Aurelie went off and found the infernal armor of Ellicide and became the Evil Overlord Darkloft. Karuna is the only one who can stop her. But Karuna loves Aurelie, even now.

Luxaren Allure is a medium-sized RPG (12-20 hours) that follows Karuna and her allies as they explore the isles of Luxaren and confront a former friend who now wants nothing but destruction. This is a wlw (women who love women, lesbian romance, yuri, etc) game with an all female playable cast.

Also included are:

  • Title Screen Art, Face Portraits and Illustrations by M-3-1 (http://m-3-1.deviantart.com/)
  • Side View CTB Battles, with animated heroes and (semi)animated enemies!
  • New tilesets and battlers, made just for this game!
  • No random encounters. All enemies are visible on screen, and each triggers a different enemy party.
  • No RTP needed! Most resources are custom, and everything's included with the download.
  • A simple crafting system.
  • A short, character driven story that plays with the standard RPG formula.

Characters:

Karuna has been training with the School of the Unwavering Blade for years, and is considered the best choice for defeating the evil of Darkloft. She's serious, strong-headed, and confident, but her reasons for choosing to be a hero might not exactly be selfless...

Chisa is Karuna's self-proclaimed squire. She's timid but very strong, if a little naive. Her loyalty to Karuna is unquestionable.

A mage from the Naga clan, and one of the few of her kind that does not view humans with suspicion. Carefree and laid-back, she quickly finds herself fascinated with Karuna's quest and even more fascinated with Karuna's squire.

The great-granddaughter of the paladin hero Estes, Lynette is a well-balanced warrior from Rezael who has trained for years to master both the physical and magical arts to make up for the fact that she didn't inherit her family's holy magic powers.

Now known as Overlord Darkloft, the evil one who has placed the isles of Luxaren in dire peril. Karuna has so many questions for her. What will happen when they finally meet again?

Scripts used:
  • Yanfly's Ace Core Engine, Message, Menu, Equipment and Battle systems!
  • Kread-EX's Animated Battlers!
  • Fomar0153's Compatible Customisable ATB/Stamina Based Battle System!
  • Coelocanth's Item Crafting system!
  • NeonBlack's No AutoShadows

And a special thanks to Red Nova, LockeZ, Crystalgate, Archeia_Nessiah, GreatRedSpirit, and everyone else in the Rpgmaker.net forums for their fantastic suggestions, advice, and general help!

Redoing Assets for a Future Steam Release

I recently launched Weird and Unfortunate Things Are Happening on Steam (click here to see the Steam page) and it's been pretty successful, and I've already gotten people asking about getting some of my other games on Steam.

The problem with Luxaren Allure is that when I made it, I started with a mindset of how I made games back in the old RPG Maker 2k days: while the tilesets were all made for the project, the icons, sounds and animations had a lot of rips from other games, and it wasn't until I was over 50% done with the game that I even started properly tracking where some of the resources were from.

My first impulse was to remake the game in RPG Maker MZ, but after careful consideration, I've scrapped that idea, as what motivates me is making new games; I doubt I could spend the time needed to redo absolutely everything to run in MZ without getting massively burnt-out, and that would also delay Izrand for a long long time, which I'd like to avoid.

So instead I've decided to just revamp the VX Ace version for Steam, by redoing or replacing any resources that I don't know the source of. Unfortunately due to my poor labeling of what I used plus the fact that a lot of places where you could get VX Ace and older resources now being offline, I've had to replace more than I might otherwise have needed.

Most of the icons were from either Dragon Quest or from packs that might have had rips in them, so I've replaced all of them save for ones that were just modified Ace icons or that I made myself.

The sounds were a big hassle, as I originally mixed sounds I got from Freesound.org with several from other games, including Warcraft III and Starcraft and a couple from older RPGs. So unless I could positively identify and credit a sound's source, which was rare, I replaced it, tho I tried to find replacements that sound similar enough. I couldn't even track the source of the original cursor sounds, so I'm using Izrand's for that, which don't 100% sound the same but kinda "feel" in the right ballpark to me.

That leaves the animations, which is going to be a good deal of work, tho I've gotten about a third of them done already. Again, some from the original are rips and there are a lot of others that I don't know the source and can't find it with google reverse image search. Luckily, about halfway thru the game I started saving any new resources with the creators' name as part of the file name, which makes verifying and crediting those a snap, but the rest... oh boy.

Some of the offending animations have just been replaced by new ones drawn by me, some have been replaced by ones I made for Izrand, and some have been replaced by assets that I've bought or from free sites with clear credit/attribution licenses, but I've still got a ways to go.

You may ask: With so much being replaced, will this still feel like the same darn game, unity? I think it will. The tilesets, monsters, hero sprites, music etc are all the same, and I'm trying hard to keep the new assets very much in spirit of the original game. It's not perfect, and still feels like a bit of a mish-mash, but to be honest that's very true to the original project, with all those animations and sounds from very different sources XD;;;

That leaves the big question of: When will this Steam edition launch? I'm thinking somewhere between March and May of this year; I both need to get the rest of these animations done and I don't want it too soon since W&U launched on Steam only a little more than a week ago.

What's going to happen to the original version of Luxaren? It'll stay right here on RMN. You can still play it as-is without any of the Steam changes. I think it's best to preserve it in it's original form alongside with the new Steam version.

I apologize to people who have been patiently waiting for Izrand, as this pushes it back slightly further while I fiddle with this, but once I get an idea like this in my head, sometimes I have to do it all before I can move on.

Before I go, here's an awesome Valentine's artwork from Maki of Karuna and Aurelie! :D (click here to go to Maki's twitter!)

EDIT: Originally, I had posted an example of one the animations I failed to name correctly when I made the game. Later that very day, I just found the source: It was by LexusX, who I did indeed have in the credits, I just failed to name that resource correctly! So that's one mystery solved XD :D

Beta testers!? No, this game needs a goddamn exorcist!

Embric was freakin hilarious. Back when I played it I was on a different RM site and even mentioning the game would warrant a ban warning (although such was never stated in the rules). I dunno how that works here.

But yeah if you ask on the forms somebody would likely provide a list and you'd get more than just the RPG crowd answering.

Embric had a lot of raunchy material for sure and definitely isn't for everyone (and has it's flaws) but I enjoyed it. ^_^ Didn't play all the routes ever but it was a fun little romp for what I did play.
figured id find more passion asking here thoe but ok
Well, I only got one more dungeon left to go and I’m finally done with this game. Yahoo, freedom!!!

E-Er…I mean, how unfortunate.

And, hell, I was actually surprised I managed to score all eight pieces of the Crystallized Hope on my own without having to use the tips section. I thought I missed one and wasn’t gonna get that sweet, sweet blade.

Anyways, I was gonna say, on Normal mode, through those last couple of dungeons once Lynette leaves the group - holy shit, why is this game suddenly even more harder than it!?!?!? It’s like god's punishing me now for getting this far and doesn't want me going any farther. Thank god, unity, you put in the ability to toggle the difficulty settings at will - because f**kkkk!!!

But I have enjoyed my overall experience with this one, so consider this a pretell sign that you ain’t getting a fail mark.

(…well, maybe, lol.)

Thanks, Addit, and kudos for sticking with it! ^_^ Just a warning, I went overboard with the last dungeon and it's a bit of a slog. Best of luck, and looking forward to seeing your review :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

You’re not kidding - it’s a f**king gong-show down there! What were you thinking!? This is like the Infinity dungeon in Breath Of Fire 2 all over again except I don’t have Nina around to scare away the baddies like these ladies do.

Looks like it’s gonna be a rough ride from here on out... I might have to toggle a difficulty level down if I can’t manage to get by on Normal mode. Still, I shall try!

I was thinking "Final Fantasy IV's last dungeon was cool. Maybe something like that." But I think it turns out that I'm the only one who liked that huge final dungeon. XD;;;;
Was FF4’s final dungeon really that big? I don’t remember it being too long to complete compared to other final dungeons that I've played.

This is more like Kefka’s Tower from FF6 sort of long compared to FF4's.

Point. It's funny, because I was worried about it being either too big or too small when I was making it, and I erroneously swept away my worries about it being too massive.

I really do like the oldschool feeling of the final dungeon as a huge test of skill, but I clearly went way overboard. I won't make that mistake again. In fact, I may make a topic out of an idea I had that might work better in the future.

You can make that sort of dungeon as an optional dungeon in the future, though. That would be okay ^_^
So I finally came back to this game and popped in to mammon's shop place. I was kind of sad that I could only use 1 of each of those key items since i had a full extra set. Ended up grinding out a few more levels and brought everyone above 60, and I'm really tempted to pull everyone up to lvl 99 or 100 to see what kind of skills I have yet to snag, but I'd hate to put all that work in only to have there be nothing new.

So I'll ask here, is there an interested surprise to be had for maxing out the levels? or will it just make the final battle that much more curb stompy?

Yeah, that's basically my plan! XD I'll write up that topic with my idea later today.

Nope, sorry, there's no bonus for maxxing out levels and you should have all the skills ^^;;

I also want to avoid the opposite problem, making it too big >.<;; XD
Dyhalto
No way. Go ape. Make it huge. Fill it with split pathways, battles that suck item stockpiles dry, super bosses guarding amazing gear, and force the player to divide the party at least once. Then give the last boss three or more forms (two is cliche), or just one really huge form.

If can only be too big if you're planning on post-game content. Otherwise, the final dungeon is the coup de grace. It's there to test every strategy and force out every resource the player's developed. Make 'em earn your ending.

Dude, Breath of Fire 2's last dungeon took like 6-8 hours. It was like a panic attack of madness. Great memories of it though.
