Karuna and Aurelie were friends. Then Aurelie went off and found the infernal armor of Ellicide and became the Evil Overlord Darkloft. Karuna is the only one who can stop her. But Karuna loves Aurelie, even now.

Luxaren Allure is a medium-sized RPG (12-20 hours) that follows Karuna and her allies as they explore the isles of Luxaren and confront a former friend who now wants nothing but destruction. This is a wlw (women who love women, lesbian romance, yuri, etc) game with an all female playable cast.

Also included are:

  • Title Screen Art, Face Portraits and Illustrations by M-3-1 (http://m-3-1.deviantart.com/)
  • Side View CTB Battles, with animated heroes and (semi)animated enemies!
  • New tilesets and battlers, made just for this game!
  • No random encounters. All enemies are visible on screen, and each triggers a different enemy party.
  • No RTP needed! Most resources are custom, and everything's included with the download.
  • A simple crafting system.
  • A short, character driven story that plays with the standard RPG formula.

Characters:

Karuna has been training with the School of the Unwavering Blade for years, and is considered the best choice for defeating the evil of Darkloft. She's serious, strong-headed, and confident, but her reasons for choosing to be a hero might not exactly be selfless...

Chisa is Karuna's self-proclaimed squire. She's timid but very strong, if a little naive. Her loyalty to Karuna is unquestionable.

A mage from the Naga clan, and one of the few of her kind that does not view humans with suspicion. Carefree and laid-back, she quickly finds herself fascinated with Karuna's quest and even more fascinated with Karuna's squire.

The great-granddaughter of the paladin hero Estes, Lynette is a well-balanced warrior from Rezael who has trained for years to master both the physical and magical arts to make up for the fact that she didn't inherit her family's holy magic powers.

Now known as Overlord Darkloft, the evil one who has placed the isles of Luxaren in dire peril. Karuna has so many questions for her. What will happen when they finally meet again?

Scripts used:
  • Yanfly's Ace Core Engine, Message, Menu, Equipment and Battle systems!
  • Kread-EX's Animated Battlers!
  • Fomar0153's Compatible Customisable ATB/Stamina Based Battle System!
  • Coelocanth's Item Crafting system!
  • NeonBlack's No AutoShadows

And a special thanks to Red Nova, LockeZ, Crystalgate, Archeia_Nessiah, GreatRedSpirit, and everyone else in the Rpgmaker.net forums for their fantastic suggestions, advice, and general help!

Redoing Assets for a Future Steam Release

I recently launched Weird and Unfortunate Things Are Happening on Steam (click here to see the Steam page) and it's been pretty successful, and I've already gotten people asking about getting some of my other games on Steam.

The problem with Luxaren Allure is that when I made it, I started with a mindset of how I made games back in the old RPG Maker 2k days: while the tilesets were all made for the project, the icons, sounds and animations had a lot of rips from other games, and it wasn't until I was over 50% done with the game that I even started properly tracking where some of the resources were from.

My first impulse was to remake the game in RPG Maker MZ, but after careful consideration, I've scrapped that idea, as what motivates me is making new games; I doubt I could spend the time needed to redo absolutely everything to run in MZ without getting massively burnt-out, and that would also delay Izrand for a long long time, which I'd like to avoid.

So instead I've decided to just revamp the VX Ace version for Steam, by redoing or replacing any resources that I don't know the source of. Unfortunately due to my poor labeling of what I used plus the fact that a lot of places where you could get VX Ace and older resources now being offline, I've had to replace more than I might otherwise have needed.

Most of the icons were from either Dragon Quest or from packs that might have had rips in them, so I've replaced all of them save for ones that were just modified Ace icons or that I made myself.

The sounds were a big hassle, as I originally mixed sounds I got from Freesound.org with several from other games, including Warcraft III and Starcraft and a couple from older RPGs. So unless I could positively identify and credit a sound's source, which was rare, I replaced it, tho I tried to find replacements that sound similar enough. I couldn't even track the source of the original cursor sounds, so I'm using Izrand's for that, which don't 100% sound the same but kinda "feel" in the right ballpark to me.

That leaves the animations, which is going to be a good deal of work, tho I've gotten about a third of them done already. Again, some from the original are rips and there are a lot of others that I don't know the source and can't find it with google reverse image search. Luckily, about halfway thru the game I started saving any new resources with the creators' name as part of the file name, which makes verifying and crediting those a snap, but the rest... oh boy.

Some of the offending animations have just been replaced by new ones drawn by me, some have been replaced by ones I made for Izrand, and some have been replaced by assets that I've bought or from free sites with clear credit/attribution licenses, but I've still got a ways to go.

You may ask: With so much being replaced, will this still feel like the same darn game, unity? I think it will. The tilesets, monsters, hero sprites, music etc are all the same, and I'm trying hard to keep the new assets very much in spirit of the original game. It's not perfect, and still feels like a bit of a mish-mash, but to be honest that's very true to the original project, with all those animations and sounds from very different sources XD;;;

That leaves the big question of: When will this Steam edition launch? I'm thinking somewhere between March and May of this year; I both need to get the rest of these animations done and I don't want it too soon since W&U launched on Steam only a little more than a week ago.

What's going to happen to the original version of Luxaren? It'll stay right here on RMN. You can still play it as-is without any of the Steam changes. I think it's best to preserve it in it's original form alongside with the new Steam version.

I apologize to people who have been patiently waiting for Izrand, as this pushes it back slightly further while I fiddle with this, but once I get an idea like this in my head, sometimes I have to do it all before I can move on.

Before I go, here's an awesome Valentine's artwork from Maki of Karuna and Aurelie! :D (click here to go to Maki's twitter!)

EDIT: Originally, I had posted an example of one the animations I failed to name correctly when I made the game. Later that very day, I just found the source: It was by LexusX, who I did indeed have in the credits, I just failed to name that resource correctly! So that's one mystery solved XD :D

I'd guess the nation was named after the god rather than them being the same thing, but it works for me either way.

Exactly yeah! :D They named it after the god.

I killed a Jerkass Flower.

Hoooray! :DDDDDDDDDD
Okay. All the Jerkass Flowers are dead. They will be missed.

Even though I'm not a yuri fan, the lovey-dovey aspects are so gratuitous and in-your-face, it's hard not to like it anyway >BD

Some last area thoughts...
I can see why people are complaining about the final dungeon xD It's not so much that you overdid it, but the structure of Luxaren Allure makes it feel umpteen times longer than it really is.
As we all know, standard RPG convention is to bounce back and forth between Town and Dungeon. In a conventional RPG's endgame, the player hops onto their airship and can freely go to any town they like, be it FirstTown for the cheapest Inn or LastTown to shop for the best gear. When they're ready, they land next to and enter Final Dungeon, all psyched up for the challenges that come with a game's climax. "Rawr! I am so ready!"
Because of LA's linear system with no world map or free travel, the moment I felt FINAL DUNGEON was when I left the Seer's House and entered the Cave of Circle Curses, especially with the new battle BGM playing. So if anybody else felt the same way I did, then yeah, it's one long-ass dungeon :D Especially with that party-divided segment, plus introducing Aurelie as a playable character with unfamiliar skills at such a late hour.
In hindsight, I can see that when you were thinking final dungeon, you were thinking of the very last area. It by itself was great ^_^)b It could have used some coherent architecture instead of just being random rooms and tunnels, but I didn't mind at all. My only complaint is that none of the mini-bosses were particularly memorable because they were so easy, but maybe that's just me being too hardcore (⌐■_■)

That makes a lot of sense! ^_^ I hadn't thought about the linear nature of the game affecting how the final dungeon feels; that's something I'll definitely keep in mind for future games :DDDDDD Thanks very much and I'm so happy you gave the game a playthrough ^_______^
You're welcome :3 Sorry for being such a putz and putting it off until now. Make a sequel and I'll promise to play it straight away >x3
Especially if the final dungeon is even longer and harder!
it is a good game but it needs better balancing in terms of prices vs income. i never have enough money to buy the the best equipment in a new town no matter how much i grind. apart from that, i see no real issues.

Thanks. ^_^ I wanted players to have to make real choices about which equipment to upgrade at new towns, but I admit I went a bit overboard XD;;;
Nah. You didn't go overboard. It was a nice, healthy balance. andreasaspenberg is probably just a little too used to the new town:buy everything paradigm.
Over the last year or so, I've (very) slowly written what I think is the only piece of LA fanfiction out there. It's nearly done. For Femslash February, I'm trying to push through what's left of it.

I'm looking for a beta reader. I can get basic spelling and grammar checks elsewhere, but for subtler issues like out-of-character moments and canon-continuity fails, I need someone who knows the game well. I don't know anywhere else to ask for that, so I'm asking here. The draft won't be ready for a couple of weeks, but given the quietude of this thread, I figure I'd better assume some delay before someone notices the request.

Anyone interested, or know someone else who might be? It looks like it will finish around 30k words, so expect a roughly three hour read.

You had me at fanfiction. :3
/me stumbles over finish line.

So, the draft is finished. Things always take longer than I expect. I'll probably need about two weeks to edit things enough to start posting -- or longer, because see previous.

I'm not sure where to post and/or link this when it's ready. I usually post fanfiction on my personal site, on AO3, and (formerly?) on FFNet. That doesn't get much exposure even for really well known fandoms. Is there anywhere else that would be appropriate, as far as finding readers goes? I don't know anything about the RPGM community, or yuri communities, or, for that matter, current fanfiction communities, so I'm not sure where to look.

If I must be honest, my first thought was to submit the fanfic as media on this gamepage. However, for what little it's worth, the fanfic for Heartache was published on a site called asianfanfics.com.

I could make a Fanfic page on this gamepage and post it here, if you like. Aside from that, I'm not really familiar with fanfic sites, I'm sorry to say ^^;;
So....uhh...Wasn't expecting this game to have CGS. They're pretty dope. But there's always the textbox covering them. Looked around and couldn't find them anywhere. Can someone hook me up with them? Even if you only have screenshots with the textbox covering it. Thanks

Beta testers!? No, this game needs a goddamn exorcist!

I thought it was illegal in 647 countries to not have a gallery mode if you have CGs in your game

I'll put them under this hide tag for you ^_^ Spoilers for anyone who hasn't played yet, of course.

I know i am super late to the party, but i only started playing Luxaren Allure a few days ago. I love the game so far but i have reached the point where the bridge to Springsmouth is being attacked and the game always crushes on the second or third encounter. so far i have not been able to progress. I decided to search the web for a fix, because i thought the problem was on my side because my computer is rather dated by today's standards but after finding this, https://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?threads/hidden-game-exe-crash-debugger-graphical-object-global-reference-ace.17400/ i think it might be on your end. If that is true, it would be awesome if you could release an update, on the other hand if the problem is on me i apologise for the intrusion.

Alright, I've added that script to the project and uploaded it. Click the Download Now button and you should now get "Luxaren Allure 2018.zip". Unzip it and move your save files from the old one to that folder, and you should be able to continue from there.

If there are still issues, please let me know. Worst case scenario, I can send you an altered version that skips to the final fight in that series of three battles, or bypasses it completely if we have to.

These crashes are in fact a known issue that I haven't been able to fix. As best I can pin down, they seem to be related to the Animated Battlers script I used, but they, for me at least, usually spring up at Singing Winds Pass. If this latest script fixes them, I'll be really happy because I feel like I've tried everything else XD
