Karuna and Aurelie were friends. Then Aurelie went off and found the infernal armor of Ellicide and became the Evil Overlord Darkloft. Karuna is the only one who can stop her. But Karuna loves Aurelie, even now.

Luxaren Allure is a medium-sized RPG (12-20 hours) that follows Karuna and her allies as they explore the isles of Luxaren and confront a former friend who now wants nothing but destruction. This is a wlw (women who love women, lesbian romance, yuri, etc) game with an all female playable cast.

Also included are:

  • Title Screen Art, Face Portraits and Illustrations by M-3-1 (http://m-3-1.deviantart.com/)
  • Side View CTB Battles, with animated heroes and (semi)animated enemies!
  • New tilesets and battlers, made just for this game!
  • No random encounters. All enemies are visible on screen, and each triggers a different enemy party.
  • No RTP needed! Most resources are custom, and everything's included with the download.
  • A simple crafting system.
  • A short, character driven story that plays with the standard RPG formula.

Characters:

Karuna has been training with the School of the Unwavering Blade for years, and is considered the best choice for defeating the evil of Darkloft. She's serious, strong-headed, and confident, but her reasons for choosing to be a hero might not exactly be selfless...

Chisa is Karuna's self-proclaimed squire. She's timid but very strong, if a little naive. Her loyalty to Karuna is unquestionable.

A mage from the Naga clan, and one of the few of her kind that does not view humans with suspicion. Carefree and laid-back, she quickly finds herself fascinated with Karuna's quest and even more fascinated with Karuna's squire.

The great-granddaughter of the paladin hero Estes, Lynette is a well-balanced warrior from Rezael who has trained for years to master both the physical and magical arts to make up for the fact that she didn't inherit her family's holy magic powers.

Now known as Overlord Darkloft, the evil one who has placed the isles of Luxaren in dire peril. Karuna has so many questions for her. What will happen when they finally meet again?

Scripts used:
  • Yanfly's Ace Core Engine, Message, Menu, Equipment and Battle systems!
  • Kread-EX's Animated Battlers!
  • Fomar0153's Compatible Customisable ATB/Stamina Based Battle System!
  • Coelocanth's Item Crafting system!
  • NeonBlack's No AutoShadows

And a special thanks to Red Nova, LockeZ, Crystalgate, Archeia_Nessiah, GreatRedSpirit, and everyone else in the Rpgmaker.net forums for their fantastic suggestions, advice, and general help!

Don't sweat it, guys. =) Once I get a new laptop, RoI and LA will be the first Ace games I'll play ( and review ).

:D Thanks, Yuna! ^_^
I usually download games in batches and then completely forget about them, so whenever I decide to try an RM game, I end up playing it blind. That means I didn't know what to expect of this game when I started it, and was quite surprised to see that Karuna was actually in love with Aurelie... and that's kind of my point. Despite there being a introductory scene where we're shown these characters interacting with each other there was never a point where I felt Karuna's actions in the game were motivated out of anything but friendship and guilt; nor did I felt that kind of chemistry between them during the opening. If anything, I felt Karuna had a motherly mentor attitude towards Aurelie based on their interactions. Maybe I'm a little thick and I'm just not seeing it, while other people find it obvious.
Don't get me wrong, I really liked the game; it's got great visuals, great characters, fun battles and a sweet soundtrack, but I had to get that out of my chest.
Good luck reaching that 100%! I'll be watching. :)

I still have a lot to learn about writing, and perhaps that leads to the weakness in the first act that you speak of. I'll continue to work on it, and hopefully I can achieve more realistic chemistry between characters at some point.

Thanks for playing and for your well wishes! ^_^

Unity, I just wanted to let you know that I am really enjoying this game, but, I'm not going to review it. Not as it currently stands. I want to review the finished product, because I start to write up notes and then a part of me interrupts the flow and reminds me that there are still many things that can and probably will change. There are elements that have not yet been fully fleshed and that exist only in your mind, and I want to experience them before I put my fledgling thoughts to paper (well screen). I'm flailing a little at this one, but I know it is because I like the characters and the world. Yes they do still need some work, and the relationship you have between K & A does need some more depth, or at least to show it, but I know it will, so I don't want to crystallise my thoughts around a vision that is as yet unrealised.

But I thought I should let you know I am enjoying and am having fun and I do want to see where this goes and how you resolve the disparate elements into a cohesive whole.

I completely understand. Thank you, nhubi. I really appreciate your deep insights and knowledge of what works and what doesn't from a player's perspective. Even though you aren't writing a review at this time, if there are any elements or specific areas that you think need improvement or are lacking, I'd be absolutely grateful if you'd send me a mail about them, if it isn't too much trouble, and I'll do my best to work on them. I've spent a lot of time on this game and I want to make it the best that I can.

I like the art, the music and that it doesn´t get boring to battle monsters or explore to find chests.
I dont really look for little details or need much to enjoy a game, so I dont have anything negative to say, this game seems flawless! :D

I've added a new scene in the prologue that makes Karuna's feelings a bit more clear, and hopefully adds a little more to their relationship. It's a pretty small addition, though.

It's now been uploaded. Thanks, everyone ^_^
i finished the 65%demo yesterday and after some rest, i'm still wondering if the 10 money chests where real o just picking on treasure hunter type players.
I Loved the cave filled with "there is no treasure head, turn back" posts. If anything, i wish there was a way to check if a map have still treasure in them.

What is the difference between "yuri" and "ladies who like ladies in that (i.e. Sapphic) way"?

Genre conventions, normally. Yuri has a lot of mushy will-they-or-won't-they emotional drama.

That's actually a good question. The way I use it, there really isn't a difference. Which brings up the question, why use that label? It's something I've been pondering.

LouisCyphre's comment about genre conventions are correct, but I'm not sure how much Luxaren Allure falls into those conventions. I was big into anime fandom growing up, so "yuri" was the term for girl-girl love stories in that circle, so with LA, I went with what was familiar. It makes an easy search-term, but it's just as likely to bring you smut (actually, much more likely XD) than it is emotional love stories, so I've honestly been questioning using it lately.

Comments and discussion on this are very welcome, as I'm curious to what everyone else thinks. And if Yuri isn't such a good descriptor, what's the best way to describe what LA offers?

Haha, maybe those chests were too mean. I'll try not to do that so much ^^;;

Something that lets you check if there's any treasure left is a good idea, but I'd need to have built that into the foundation of the game. It's a good idea for a future game, but I probably won't be implementing it here.

About 45 characters, so "yuri" is clearly the more efficient choice!

@Sooz: well, yeah smartass :P

But the logical word-for-word replacement for the game's short description would be "lesbian" which is only three lousy characters longer and has the added bonus of being an actual English language word. : P

Thanks for answering and taking the question seriously it was meant earnestly and I'm glad it wasn't taken the wrong way. I'm definitely not one to say that Yuri is or isn't a good descriptor for this game but I mean I honestly don't know what it means. I mean let me be clear, I totally get that it means "lesbian" and/or "lady-love" but yeah basically I feel like it has a whole other subtext of meaning that I am not clear on. This would be the genre conventions and whatnot that LouisCyphre was talking about. (Let me be straight with you: I mainly just watch anime with "themes" of violence and/or killing so my knowledge of romance anime tropes and demographics is basically non-existent.)

I mean while I was obviously not looking for any kind of smut or even pseudo-smut from this game I have to admit that the inclusion of "beautiful ladies who like each other" tropes certainly notched my interest up a tick in the converse way that if the game had been said to prominently include 'yaoi' themes I would have run for the hills from the game page and never looked back. That just being chalked up to personal preference I guess. But I mean IRL a couple of my friends are lesbians that are married (i.e. to each other) and I couldn't possibly be any less interested in the physical or emotional particulars of their relationship so idk...it's interesting.

I mean whether the short description said 'yuri' or 'lesbian' wouldn't make me any more or less likely to click on the game personally I just found myself really curious about what additional assumptions came with the connotation of 'yuri'. The layered meanings of Japanese-isms interest me coming from outside of that entire experiential bubble. My own anime fandom is rather idiosyncratic and atypical and restrained so I actually don't have a very deep understanding of a lot of anime fan-isms like "yuri". Even reading this wikipedia page it's not immediately clear if the term 'yuri' is meant to connote a somewhat risque and for lack of a better word "exploitative" (I am actually NOT using that word in a negative or pejorative sense) exploration of lesbian relationships as entertainment or the exact opposite of that.

Later on in this post: I play the actual game and comment. Plz excuse my blathering about yuri as normal people engage with the game on this level:

Okay, I played a tiny little bit (just the intro). I'll play lots more later. Some early thoughts: Obviously, the overall level of polish is astounding at least coming from Chase for Divinity. M-3-1's face portraits are lush and gorgeous and awesome and I find myself wondering how much unity's character designs informed them. The (custom?) tiles look great and the XP RTP style sprites (if my eye is not mistaken) complement them nicely.

The intro is an interesting case in storytelling. In it's favor it's got a very good hook and it is really, really fast paced. Like, lightning-fast I would say, which is kind of awesome. On the other hand, it feels slightly rushed but more importantly the entire opening mission to rescue the kid feels like it wants to be playable--with a few battles controlling Aurelie and Karuna together and everything--and I'm not really sure why it isn't. The maps seem like they're all there so I'm not sure why you only seem them in a rapid fire sequence of non-playable cutscenes rather than a little introductory playable mission sequence to introduce you to basic gameplay concepts. Anyway, final thought on the storytelling is that even this early in the story it really feels like Karuna is putting on the idiot hat and acting fully out of character when she decides to just leave Aurelie alone in the creepy mysterious castle to do whatever mysterious and sketchy stuff she feels like doing but refuses to explain. Yuri themes aside I mean if my friend was like "oh you go on ahead I am going to stay in this creepy spook castle to do...stuff...you know, that I can't tell you about" I'd be all like..."Hey, maybe...DON'T do that instead?" I totally get that the game's ENTIRE plot is predicated on this moment but that's probably a good reason to strive to make it feel more natural and logical for the characters.

One final thought...the introduction to basic gameplay concepts by a magic bookstand in the King Ergengard (sp?)'s thronerom after the end of the intro is kind of silly, because honestly if you had not figured out that the arrow keys make you move etcetera and so on by now, you would not have been able to make it this far in the game.

There are various settings, character types, and elements commonly associated with yuri, such as "older classmate as a lover in an all girl's school," but I don't feel like any of them are really essential to enjoying the genre, as long as you like ladies who like ladies ^_^

I hear you with the mention of the association with exploitation. It definitely is a genre that's just as likely to be associated with smut, but then again, there's unfortunately a similar association to the word 'lesbian' in fiction in general, where the common idea is that if it has 'lesbian' as a tag, that it's going to be porny (which, if that's what you're looking for, that's all cool. It can just make finding clean lesbian romance harder).

I could ramble on and on about my experience with the genre, the tendency for it to be used as a bait-and-switch in anime, and so on, but I'll leave it there unless there's anything else you'd like to ask :D

You're right on both those counts: all the tilesets are indeed custom (made by me XD) and those are XP style sprites. I had originally done the face-art myself, but M-3-1 really breathed life into them and gave them real beauty. I'm so thankful to have her help on this project!

At this point in the game, the isles are supposed to be safe and monsters are almost unheard of. However, you make an excellent point. I'll consider it. Not sure how I'd swing it, but it's definitely do-able.

Another good point. My logic on Karuna's part was A) she's occupied with getting this kid home, B) there shouldn't be any monsters or anything dangerous left here, and C) Aurelie played in the castle all the time as a kid, so she can probably handle herself.

However, now that you mention it, it does seem a bit dumb. While I hate to rewrite it this far along, if it'll improve things I may do so. If I added a battle (or more), and made the situation where Aurelie had to get back to town on her own, the game would probably flow a lot better in the prologue. I don't want to add too much, as I don't want Karuna to be overleveled from the prologue (and that she doesn't have any offensive skills yet means I'll have to make sure any prologue battles are quick and well crafted).

You've given me a lot to think about, Max! Thank you so much! :DDD

I've been swaying back and forth on the issue. I think I'll leave it as Yuri for now, but I'll still be considering things. And I'm definitely all for more bisexual representation (I'm bi myself, by the way XD). I should include more bi characters in future games (not saying that none of the LA cast is bi, it's just not apparent :P)

So I just moved computers and I just now realized that I lost all of my other peoples' RPG maker games and therefore all my save files for other peoples' RPG maker games and argh.

Not a problem for this game because LA's intro was like 10 minutes max if that and I'd barely gotten anywhere so I don't mind sitting through it again. It's going to suck for some other games I was looking forward to playing though (i.e. Vagabond which I made significant progress in and IMTS which had a really involved intro and non-interactive intro sequence) though.

Not sure if the less annoying solution is to dig out my old desktop and get it set up again somewhere and try and salvage the contents of my 'Other Peoples' Games' folder onto a flash drive or to just grin and bear it and replay a bunch of intros. Hmm.

Yeah, if you can bear getting back on your old compy, it can save you a lot of hassle if you want to keep playing those games. I assumed you remembered to get all the stuff vital for Gam Mak the first time, though? Don't want you to lose any progress you've made on your own games :D

In a sort of related thing, I looked at an old complete game of mine that I never uploaded anywhere, and found that I backed-up the wrong version (that was only halfway done) and am also going to have to go old-computer-delving if I want to try to salvage the complete version. The computer that it's probably on is like over ten years old, though. Maybe I'll attempt it at some point.
