Karuna and Aurelie were friends. Then Aurelie went off and found the infernal armor of Ellicide and became the Evil Overlord Darkloft. Karuna is the only one who can stop her. But Karuna loves Aurelie, even now.

Luxaren Allure is a medium-sized RPG (12-20 hours) that follows Karuna and her allies as they explore the isles of Luxaren and confront a former friend who now wants nothing but destruction. This is a wlw (women who love women, lesbian romance, yuri, etc) game with an all female playable cast.

Also included are:

  • Title Screen Art, Face Portraits and Illustrations by M-3-1 (http://m-3-1.deviantart.com/)
  • Side View CTB Battles, with animated heroes and (semi)animated enemies!
  • New tilesets and battlers, made just for this game!
  • No random encounters. All enemies are visible on screen, and each triggers a different enemy party.
  • No RTP needed! Most resources are custom, and everything's included with the download.
  • A simple crafting system.
  • A short, character driven story that plays with the standard RPG formula.

Characters:

Karuna has been training with the School of the Unwavering Blade for years, and is considered the best choice for defeating the evil of Darkloft. She's serious, strong-headed, and confident, but her reasons for choosing to be a hero might not exactly be selfless...

Chisa is Karuna's self-proclaimed squire. She's timid but very strong, if a little naive. Her loyalty to Karuna is unquestionable.

A mage from the Naga clan, and one of the few of her kind that does not view humans with suspicion. Carefree and laid-back, she quickly finds herself fascinated with Karuna's quest and even more fascinated with Karuna's squire.

The great-granddaughter of the paladin hero Estes, Lynette is a well-balanced warrior from Rezael who has trained for years to master both the physical and magical arts to make up for the fact that she didn't inherit her family's holy magic powers.

Now known as Overlord Darkloft, the evil one who has placed the isles of Luxaren in dire peril. Karuna has so many questions for her. What will happen when they finally meet again?

Scripts used:
  • Yanfly's Ace Core Engine, Message, Menu, Equipment and Battle systems!
  • Kread-EX's Animated Battlers!
  • Fomar0153's Compatible Customisable ATB/Stamina Based Battle System!
  • Coelocanth's Item Crafting system!
  • NeonBlack's No AutoShadows

And a special thanks to Red Nova, LockeZ, Crystalgate, Archeia_Nessiah, GreatRedSpirit, and everyone else in the Rpgmaker.net forums for their fantastic suggestions, advice, and general help!

Chapter 4 is up!

Don't worry about the wait. I'm used to it. :-P A certain family member of mine still hasn't finished reading my last fanfic, and that's been up for years.

author=unity
Haha, you got me! XD

Good. I would have been really embarrassed if that turned out not to be on purpose. :-)

As I went through the script and maps, I kept seeing more and more things like that...little hints that weren't spelled out, but that I was pretty sure were intentional. I love that sort of thing. It makes the setting feel more like a coherent world, one that extends outside the bounds of the narrative. It also makes me feel like a genius when I catch something. :-P Much of what I (think I) spotted turned out to be useful, too, though I won't say how yet. Once the story is over I'd love to find out which hints were real and which are just me seeing patterns in noise.
Back from Dragoncon, and chapter 5 is up!

(I really hate asking this, but: if you have a way to signal boost this to other players, could you? The only people I know that've played the game are my girlfriend and my ex. Small audience.)

If that's a consolation to you: this game has about 137 subscribers (me being one of them); your audience might not be quite that small.

Out of curiosity, I did a Google search of "luxaren allure fanfiction". Your archiveoryourown.org profile is the fifth result!

As an aside, I couldn't help but to notice the entry just above yours is T. R. Myer's fanfiction.net's profile. I don't want to say more on that point, but, I've a good idea of who that might be.

It's pretty easy to tell who it is, on account of they put their name on the profile: T. R. Myer. :V
Huh, cool. I didn't know there was a subscription function. I assumed Unity was the only one seeing any of this unless somebody Just Happened to check the thread. Which is what I've been doing until now. O_o
... You've been here 3 years and didn't know how to sub??

We need better intros then?

... TVTropes would get you more views... ... You only have 20 tho... Maybe 'cause we have to find the post to get the link...

But anyone that lurks would've seen you post...

...

Wow! 10440 words and that's 5/13 chapters! Congrats! ... And here I am, still having not finished the game...

...

Googling weirdness.

... I search "T. R. Myer fanfic" and Marrend's post is first...

I have to use "luxaren allure fanfiction" to get to their actual Fanfic.net page. Which doesn't even have LA fics.

And I can't find the AO3 page for the fic from that...
Well, I don't really use the site at all. I literally only made an account to post in this thread. :-P And I'd feel like a spammer if I randomly added references for my fanfiction to tvtropes. I've never contributed to the site. Hell, I feel like half a spammer just posting chapter updates here.

Thanks. :-) Technically only twelve chapters...the thirteenth "chapter" is actually fragments from the cutting room floor (AO3 has no way to designate backmatter). The whole thing clocks in around 30k words. Fair warning, if you haven't finished the game, there's a couple spoilers in the later chapters.

What's T.R. Myer's significance? Should I recognize the name? I checked before posting, and I'm reasonably sure I'm the first to fic LA.

You could actually submit a Fanfic here via the Submit Media link! It's a thing that people have done before and it will go through the queue first but then show up on the Media page when done (much like Let's Plays and the like). XD

Oh, yeah, submitting fanfiction as a media object. I don't know if there is a template, per say, but, I'm aware of this fanfiction, and, of course, my own stuff.

I've heard about this "fan fiction" before
And there goes chapter six. Does it count as technically on time if it's Saturday on the other coast?

I'll try the media object thing in the morning.
Pardon the missed update, I had a belated case of con plague. :-( Chapter seven is up now.
I finally set up the media submission. Thanks, Liberty.

I can't get AO3 to cough up per-day stats, so in the absence of comments I've no way to tell if I'm posting too fast or not, or even how many people are reading -- repeat visits don't seem to affect the hit counter. If anyone wants me to slow down (or doesn't), speak up.

(Yes, this is a thinly veiled attempt to elicit validation in the form of comments. It's a writer thing. I'm not proud of it.)

While there's still a couple curveballs to come, it just occurred to me that Chapter 7 is the point where I can finally ask Unity: How close are Merel's (i.e. my) conclusions to what you actually intended?

(potential spoilers for either LA or AD blanked)

Heather worked out in-game that infernal energies and alchemy were involved in the Naga's creation, there's a reference somewhere to Luxaren having once been called the Infernal Isles, there's the alchemy stations of which Merel said "I didn't think demons did alchemy", which seemed suspiciously like a hint, Merel herself has one random Infernal impulse spell...I think there were a few more, though I'd have to dig through my notes to find them. All little things that might hint at the possibility that demons created the Naga for their own purposes. But nothing in the game's text confirms it, so I'm really curious to know how close I got to the mark.

I've been reading along as you post new chapters, but have been pretty quiet on both RMN and twitter lately as I've been a little bit reclusive. Your fanfiction continues to be really interesting and surprisingly consistent with a ton of the lore, which is really impressive and flattering. ^_^ Thanks again!

In the current landscape of author-fan relations, where JK Rowling can clarify her stories in bizarre ways that may or may not have even been on her mind while writing, I've gotten less interested in telling players about specific story details and more interested in letting player just draw their own conclusions.

Having said that, you're writing a lot of fanfiction here and it's clear that you've put a whole lot of thought into this world and thoroughly poked around for clues, so I'll indulge you ^_^

Hidden under a hide tag for spoilers:
The Nagas were, in fact, supposed to be originally created when humans tried to tap into the infernal power that lies deep beneath the Luxaren isles via a demonic ritual, and the ancestors of the present-day Naga did in fact do a lot to try to hide this fact from the rest of the world and eventually forbade their own offspring from learning about their origin.

Alchemy, while not an infernal art, was originally used by the demons, and is a skill that both humans and Naga learned from poking around where they shouldn't have. I don't remember if I intended Naga to have learned alchemy during that demonic ritual, but I do remember that both humans and Naga came about the skill of alchemy separately from each other.

I hadn't envisioned any sort of demon slave army, it was more a Faustian-type bargain. They did the demonic ritual to gain infernal power, but in return were cursed to become Nagas. Over the years, the darkness in their blood weakened, but the curse remains and can never be erased, and now they consider themselves a different race or species from normal humans. So hopefully that answers your question ^_^
I've been reading along as you post new chapters

This is more relieving to me than it should be. :-P Intellectually I know I write well, but right after I post something, all my suppressed insecurities start screaming at me. The one comment in chapter 5 about the private fears of authors comes straight from my jerkbrain.

I'm not plugged in to fandom in general, so I don't know anything about the landscape you mention. I do put a lot of effort into canon compliance and continuity, so it's really nice that it's appreciated. More came out of the effort than just research, too. I actually missed most of the Hotenshin scenes while playing, because that segment tripped some serious vicarious embarrassment for me. I clicked through it with my eyes mostly closed. I got to see what I missed while studying the script.

so I'll indulge you ^_^

Thanks! Hidden for spoilers:

Damn, I was way off. :-P Except for the bit about doing a lot to hide their history -- perhaps I should have waited one more chapter to ask, because that's about to come up in passing. Oh well! It's still interesting to see how two wildly different histories both fit the same set of in-game evidence.

That's completely understandable! Posting something and getting no feedback can be pretty frustrating, and yeah, even when you know you're good at what you do, your brain can start questioning things.

Haha, I can't blame you, as I indulged in a lot of embarrassing romance-y stuff there.

As for what you said in the hide tags, I'm honestly still impressed with how much you picked up from in-game clues!

And that's the beauty of fanfiction. It exists to explore the gaps in the story itself. The story you are telling does in fact fit into the canon that has been presented, even if it's not 100% how I imagined it, which is exactly what good fanfiction does.

Any author could come in with a red pen and say "Nope nope nope" to a piece of fanfiction, but that misses the point. It's one person taking what was presented and expanding on it, and I think that's pretty magically all on its own ^_^
And here we go again with chapter eight. :-)

Possibly of interest: Early on I did a lot of second-guessing around how to depict Merel's research. I have no idea how actual linguists do their thing, and I was afraid I was getting it embarrassingly wrong. Think every movie with a computer hack in it ever.

Eventually I realized that Merel doesn't know how it's supposed to be done either, so she could just try to solve the problem the way I would, and if it wasn't the Right Thing it would still fit.
Chapter ten! It's the longest chapter by a fair margin, and it was also the hardest to get right, I think. Well, except the last one, but we're not there yet.

Getting close though. One thing I should have asked for earlier: Anyone who notices errors or typos, feel free to tell me. I've caught a few as I go (I vet each chapter one final time before posting), but I'm sure I missed some. One of the nice things about writing online is that it's never too late to make corrections.
