Karuna and Aurelie were friends. Then Aurelie went off and found the infernal armor of Ellicide and became the Evil Overlord Darkloft. Karuna is the only one who can stop her. But Karuna loves Aurelie, even now.

Luxaren Allure is a medium-sized RPG (12-20 hours) that follows Karuna and her allies as they explore the isles of Luxaren and confront a former friend who now wants nothing but destruction. This is a wlw (women who love women, lesbian romance, yuri, etc) game with an all female playable cast.

Also included are:

  • Title Screen Art, Face Portraits and Illustrations by M-3-1 (http://m-3-1.deviantart.com/)
  • Side View CTB Battles, with animated heroes and (semi)animated enemies!
  • New tilesets and battlers, made just for this game!
  • No random encounters. All enemies are visible on screen, and each triggers a different enemy party.
  • No RTP needed! Most resources are custom, and everything's included with the download.
  • A simple crafting system.
  • A short, character driven story that plays with the standard RPG formula.

Characters:

Karuna has been training with the School of the Unwavering Blade for years, and is considered the best choice for defeating the evil of Darkloft. She's serious, strong-headed, and confident, but her reasons for choosing to be a hero might not exactly be selfless...

Chisa is Karuna's self-proclaimed squire. She's timid but very strong, if a little naive. Her loyalty to Karuna is unquestionable.

A mage from the Naga clan, and one of the few of her kind that does not view humans with suspicion. Carefree and laid-back, she quickly finds herself fascinated with Karuna's quest and even more fascinated with Karuna's squire.

The great-granddaughter of the paladin hero Estes, Lynette is a well-balanced warrior from Rezael who has trained for years to master both the physical and magical arts to make up for the fact that she didn't inherit her family's holy magic powers.

Now known as Overlord Darkloft, the evil one who has placed the isles of Luxaren in dire peril. Karuna has so many questions for her. What will happen when they finally meet again?

Scripts used:
  • Yanfly's Ace Core Engine, Message, Menu, Equipment and Battle systems!
  • Kread-EX's Animated Battlers!
  • Fomar0153's Compatible Customisable ATB/Stamina Based Battle System!
  • Coelocanth's Item Crafting system!
  • NeonBlack's No AutoShadows

And a special thanks to Red Nova, LockeZ, Crystalgate, Archeia_Nessiah, GreatRedSpirit, and everyone else in the Rpgmaker.net forums for their fantastic suggestions, advice, and general help!

Redoing Assets for a Future Steam Release

I recently launched Weird and Unfortunate Things Are Happening on Steam (click here to see the Steam page) and it's been pretty successful, and I've already gotten people asking about getting some of my other games on Steam.

The problem with Luxaren Allure is that when I made it, I started with a mindset of how I made games back in the old RPG Maker 2k days: while the tilesets were all made for the project, the icons, sounds and animations had a lot of rips from other games, and it wasn't until I was over 50% done with the game that I even started properly tracking where some of the resources were from.

My first impulse was to remake the game in RPG Maker MZ, but after careful consideration, I've scrapped that idea, as what motivates me is making new games; I doubt I could spend the time needed to redo absolutely everything to run in MZ without getting massively burnt-out, and that would also delay Izrand for a long long time, which I'd like to avoid.

So instead I've decided to just revamp the VX Ace version for Steam, by redoing or replacing any resources that I don't know the source of. Unfortunately due to my poor labeling of what I used plus the fact that a lot of places where you could get VX Ace and older resources now being offline, I've had to replace more than I might otherwise have needed.

Most of the icons were from either Dragon Quest or from packs that might have had rips in them, so I've replaced all of them save for ones that were just modified Ace icons or that I made myself.

The sounds were a big hassle, as I originally mixed sounds I got from Freesound.org with several from other games, including Warcraft III and Starcraft and a couple from older RPGs. So unless I could positively identify and credit a sound's source, which was rare, I replaced it, tho I tried to find replacements that sound similar enough. I couldn't even track the source of the original cursor sounds, so I'm using Izrand's for that, which don't 100% sound the same but kinda "feel" in the right ballpark to me.

That leaves the animations, which is going to be a good deal of work, tho I've gotten about a third of them done already. Again, some from the original are rips and there are a lot of others that I don't know the source and can't find it with google reverse image search. Luckily, about halfway thru the game I started saving any new resources with the creators' name as part of the file name, which makes verifying and crediting those a snap, but the rest... oh boy.

Some of the offending animations have just been replaced by new ones drawn by me, some have been replaced by ones I made for Izrand, and some have been replaced by assets that I've bought or from free sites with clear credit/attribution licenses, but I've still got a ways to go.

You may ask: With so much being replaced, will this still feel like the same darn game, unity? I think it will. The tilesets, monsters, hero sprites, music etc are all the same, and I'm trying hard to keep the new assets very much in spirit of the original game. It's not perfect, and still feels like a bit of a mish-mash, but to be honest that's very true to the original project, with all those animations and sounds from very different sources XD;;;

That leaves the big question of: When will this Steam edition launch? I'm thinking somewhere between March and May of this year; I both need to get the rest of these animations done and I don't want it too soon since W&U launched on Steam only a little more than a week ago.

What's going to happen to the original version of Luxaren? It'll stay right here on RMN. You can still play it as-is without any of the Steam changes. I think it's best to preserve it in it's original form alongside with the new Steam version.

I apologize to people who have been patiently waiting for Izrand, as this pushes it back slightly further while I fiddle with this, but once I get an idea like this in my head, sometimes I have to do it all before I can move on.

Before I go, here's an awesome Valentine's artwork from Maki of Karuna and Aurelie! :D (click here to go to Maki's twitter!)

EDIT: Originally, I had posted an example of one the animations I failed to name correctly when I made the game. Later that very day, I just found the source: It was by LexusX, who I did indeed have in the credits, I just failed to name that resource correctly! So that's one mystery solved XD :D

Thank you very much! I'm very sorry, but I don't speak Portuguese, so I just ran your words through a translator.

Your game crashes after saving? That's awful, I'm very sorry! That's not a problem I've heard of before. Did it always do that even when you first saved?

yes, that happens whenever I save the game, and sometimes when I try to load, and now something new has happened, after I used the ability to drain hp into area she took damage and died and the game closed again, and it just happened in the last dungeon

I am very sorry. I'm not sure how this is happening. I added a script that fixed a lot of the in-battle crashing, but I've never heard of save or load crashing.

I'll see if I can find anything, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to do anything about that. Sorry again that you have been having these troubles.

Well, I liked the game but as it is unfortunately closing after I use a skill I don't know if that can happen again with other spells, unfortunately I will give up the game, but it is very interesting, a shame I will not end up being in the end

Hmm... Random idea... Try some compatibility settings?

What skill are you trying to use? Maybe we can give you a strategy that avoids that skill?

Yes, I reported that bug too a while ago, Chisa's HP drain skills cause a crash when they target enemies that absorb physical damage (like the Force Ghost), this type of behaviour is not handled well by the engine when it comes to HP drain skills and causes the crash. (technically, the effect should be reversed, and Chisa should take the damage instead of healing, but the engine doesn't like it, for some reason.)

I think a potential fix would be to change those enemies to immune instead of absorbing the physical element.
For the time being, you should just refrain from using the hp drain skill against those enemies like the Force Ghost.

That's something I can fix, at least. Not sure why I didn't do it earlier.

Okay, updated the download. Force Absorber is now "Force Ignorer" and just takes 1% damage from physical attacks instead of absorbing them.
I managed to finish the game.

* There are useful facilities scattered throughout non-town areas, which saves the player the trouble of returning to town.
* Late-game, the player can alchemize items that recover HP or MP after a battle, which is a good way to make the final dungeon's length more manageable.
* The game uses some kind of ATB/CTB, but there's no way to see the turn order or ATB bars. While the game is still beatable, it did cause me to take unnecessary precautions during boss battles because I can't be sure if Chisa will get her turn soon enough.
* Late game, I had a hard time accumulating medicinal powder, even with the accessory that boosts drop rates. Fortunately, the party's late-game healing abilities are powerful enough to save on items.
* I personally wish the final party consisted of all five characters. Lynette's not a nice person, but she does fill the role of debuffing the enemy and no one else seems to have water skills. Plus, I think if she fights alongside Aurelie for an entire dungeon, that could lead to some interesting character development.
* After the credits, Lynette claims I still owe her, which implies I missed something. Was there some secret sidequest for her? I already beat the three headed sea creature, so that can't be it.
* Why exactly did Darkloft want to overrun the world with demons? She seems to have some kind of darwinist mindset and I'm guessing she believes the demons deserve to conquer the world because they're stronger than humans and nagas. Plus, gaining the demons' power means she'll be at the top of the food chain.
* When Darkloft is defeated, you can see that she has blonde hair despite not possessing Aurelie. My guess is that she's related to Aurelie's family, who all have the Infernal element. Maybe Darkloft is the reason why Aurelie's mother warns her to use her powers for good.

I've a sub-thought on at least one of those points.

[When Darkloft is defeated, you can see that she has blonde hair despite not possessing Aurelie. My guess is that she's related to Aurelie's family, who all have the Infernal element. Maybe Darkloft is the reason why Aurelie's mother warns her to use her powers for good.]

Like, okay, it's been a while since I've played this game, and it's certainly not fresh in my head. However, I was under the impression that Aurelie fell under Darloft's influence due to her own feelings of inadequacy/insecurity? Like, the Infernal/Damned abilities that Aurelie had in-game were somehow inherited from the time Darkloft inhabited her body? As if her mind was infused with the knowledge/ability to use them, even if she probably can't call forth the "big guns" that Darkloft would be able to. I also don't recall any mention of Aurelie's family, but, again, my memory could merely be faulty here.

Though, to play a bit of devil's advocate to my own point, I also vaguely remember a thought-bubble from Karuna that Aurelie was, if not the best student, but, among the best students of the Unwavering Blade. Still, I didn't get the impression that she took Pride (a capital "P" to reference to the deadly sin) in that, or in herself. She still considered herself a weak person, despite her abilities. Hence, the infernal voice whispering in her ear that it could grant her power beyond imagining tempted her beyond her limits, and, well, yeah. Game happened.

Yeah, it's CTB. I couldn't get the graphical thing that showed turn order to work, which yeah, really does hamper your ability to tell when characters get their turn. In hindsight, an ATB set to Wait would probably have been more useful than what I did, and I may do that for future games.

Late game, I had a hard time accumulating medicinal powder, even with the accessory that boosts drop rates. Fortunately, the party's late-game healing abilities are powerful enough to save on items.

Hmmm yeah that's an oversight on my part. I'll fix that at some point soon. Thank you!

Spoiler Stuff below :D

"* I personally wish the final party consisted of all five characters. Lynette's not a nice person, but she does fill the role of debuffing the enemy and no one else seems to have water skills. Yeah, that certainly would have been better. I set up the game early on to have a max party size of four and ended up hamstringing myself later with that limitation.

"* After the credits, Lynette claims I still owe her, which implies I missed something. Was there some secret sidequest for her? I already beat the three headed sea creature, so that can't be it."

Nah, that was more aimed at me or the story overall. I've been meaning to do a spinoff game for ages to flesh out Lynette and give her a satisfying conclusion to her character but I haven't gotten around to it yet >.>;;

"* Why exactly did Darkloft want to overrun the world with demons? She seems to have some kind of darwinist mindset and I'm guessing she believes the demons deserve to conquer the world because they're stronger than humans and nagas. Plus, gaining the demons' power means she'll be at the top of the food chain."

Pretty much. Darloft herself isn't a very complex character. She's basically just really power-hungry and willing to do anything to get that power. Having demons take over the world is fine by her as long as she gets the power and authority to do whatever she wants and squash anyone who doesn't bow down to her. Her actual sanity over why she wants this has possibly degraded over the many years.

"* When Darkloft is defeated, you can see that she has blonde hair despite not possessing Aurelie. My guess is that she's related to Aurelie's family, who all have the Infernal element. Maybe Darkloft is the reason why Aurelie's mother warns her to use her powers for good."

Yeah, I wanted to hint that Aurelie might be distantly related to Darkloft, and that those who wield the Infernal powers can be corrupted by them, or they can learn to control that power like Aurelie learns to do.

And, referencing stuff Marrend said:

Yes, this factors into a lot of it. Karuna and Lady Yvian can see Aurelie's potential, but many of the other students do not, and Aurelie's inability to quickly grasp new concepts that the other students seem to pick up easily just feeds into her lack of self-esteem. While the infernal powers dwelling within were the biggest part of how easily Aurelie was possessed, her own insecurity certainly made the process easier for Darkloft to control her.

I may have a fix for your crashes.
Examining your gobj log I was able to make some small changes that stopped to error from returning.
The whole issue with the game crashing is probably because of too many memory leaks. Over time they could crash at random.

In the animated battlers script line 743 - take out the :: in front of Sprite.new
This stopped the animation errors.
sprite = Sprite.new(viewport)

For the save game error, I found some code by Mithran that fixes it.
class Scene_File

def terminate
super
@savefile_windows.each {|window| window.dispose }
@savefile_viewport.dispose # dispose viewport LAST
end
end
