Spirit Legends takes place at a time when the world changes and is placed in great peril. An event takes place that grants all animals greater intelligence and reduces all humans to bumbling idiots. A small group of animals know that the world is in danger and take it upon themselves to save it. They must travel to learn from those who came before them, learn great new abilities, and do all they can to change the world back to how it was.

Spirit Legends is a traditional RPG that began being created back in 1997 by my friend Kurt and myself. We were 10 at the time and we wanted to write a video game that featured all of our past and present pets. We wrote the entire game and then eventually it was lost over the years of not thinking about it. About 15 years later Kurt and I starting talking about it again, but were unable to find where it was saved anywhere. So, we tried our best to remember what we had wrote and filling in the blanks as best we could. Slowly over about a year's time I put little bits of time into making our childhood game. I hope anybody who plays will enjoy it. Thanks!

- About 5-8 hours to complete the game
- 10 playable animal characters (cats and dogs)
- Lots of random video game, movie, and television references
- Bonus end game dungeon/boss
- 2 slightly different endings

Art Credits: Enterbrain, Kaleb Daub, Mack, PandaMaru, Fayforest, Ruruga, Gozaru, GrandmaDeb, Rajawali, Between Truth and Fantasy, Thalazon, Birdzilla.

Thank you all those whose hard work made it possible to make this game!

Walkthrough / Let's Play

It has been several years since creating this, my first ever, game. Looking back at it I am still proud of it and happy I made it. So, I went back and did a Let's Play that can act as a walkthrough for anybody who gets lost or needs some help:

While you are there you can check out some of the other videos I did in a series of Let's Plays, check it out if you're interested:

https://www.youtube.com/user/ThirdStrongest

But thank you again for playing and I hope everyone enjoys the game!

I wanted to like this game, I really did. There were just so many flaws, though.

I can definitely see where you're coming from with some of these, there are some legit criticisms here. I'd like to think a lot of them are due to the fact that this is the first game I ever made (encounter rates too high, gold/XP balance, unbalanced skills, etc). And some of these are definitely missed opportunities on my part (on-rails story and monsters not having vulnerabilities they should have are big ones).

But in the end, it was a game that I tried making on my own, I completely understand it has it's flaws, but in the end I was pretty happy with it. I tried improving some of those in the next game I made and will definitely try to if I ever decide to make another one. Making games is tough :P

Thanks for giving it a try and sorry you didn't like it, I look forward to seeing one of your games.
I wanted to like this game, I really did. There were just so many flaws, though.

- The storyline is on-rails that it should have the Amtrak logo on it. Some parts of the map consisted of just one very obvious route from Town A to Town B. In areas where it looked like you had a choice of where to go, that turned out to be an illusion -- one of the characters would invariably say something like "We shouldn't go here until we've done X."

- The dialogue was frequently awkward. Often it sounded unnatural because contractions weren't used by the characters, even though they would have been said in any normal conversation. Other times the wording just seemed a little off, or an odd phrase was used. In a few places, the dialogue should have been conditional based on player actions, but it wasn't. In other words, I was told how to get past a certain obstacle before even encountering it, or I was warned about a potential problem I had already taken care of.

- Encounter rates seemed way too high in some areas. I expect to get pounced on when I'm dungeon-crawling, sure, but I'd like to be able to take more than three steps between battles.

- Rewards for defeating monsters -- both gold and XP -- often seemed much lower than the effort involved in defeating them. The situation is made worse by having to buy increasingly expensive gear for an increasingly large party, so after a while I was grinding not for levels, but for money to buy upgrades.

- Some powers/skills were much weaker than would be expected for the amount of MP or TP required to use them. Your typical "all enemeies" attack (for fire, ice, and the like) is more effective at 8 MP than an equivalent attack costing 10 MP. I tried using the bodyslam technique probably two dozen times and only had it work once. When I finally saved up enough TP to use the light/holy "all enemies" attack that required 50 points, I was expecting it to be devastating; turns out it was weaker than the one that could be cast at any time for 30 MP.

- Some monsters didn't seem to have the vulnerabilities that common sense would suggest they would have.

- Intervals between gaining abilities are too large. Other RPGs give you (or allow you to buy) something for practically every level you advance, but this game only gives you a new skill or spell every five levels. On top of that, all of the characters have the same Level 5 ability, and some of the higher-level abilities for certain characters seemed pointless.

If I have to choose between a character who can cast a spell that *might* put one character to sleep and a character that can cast a spell that will *always* do damage to the entire enemy group, guess who isn't going into combat rotation? Plus, when I did try one of those special abilities -- sleep or stun or confuse or something like that -- the description said it worked against all enemies, but it made me pick an individual to target.

I loved the idea of people's pets becoming world-saving adventurers, but by the time I got to the final town and was told *yet again* exactly where I was allowed to go, I didn't have much will to continue. It didn't help that even though I thought I had maxed out the gear on all of my characters, I discovered that this magical place had even better gear that was even more expensive! I'm sorry to say that the world will remain forever in need of saving because I deleted the game.
It has been a while since I looked back at this game. But I did just finish my new game and a download is available. It features the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and I am pretty proud of it. If you enjoy this game, you might want to think about giving that one a look. Here is a link to the game page:

All the way up to 1000 downloads! I'm pretty proud of that milestone. I hope people are still enjoying the game as I continue working on another one. I appreciate any feedback anyone has, but just thank you for taking the time to play it!

Ok i will download the game and see how it looks and i feel i should say i really do like the idea of the game i just kind of have OCD when it comes to somethings in video games :)

Anyway i will be bad after i take a look to say how i feel.....unless you would rather me say nothing if so just tell me and i will zip my lips.

It was only minor changes, so try to not get your hopes up too high. Haha
Pixel art is certainly not my strong point, so I had to settle a bit, but even with its crudity I'm still proud of the game as a whole. And feedback is always welcome :)

Man i won't lie to you the pics of the cats are kind of....bad looking unless i did something wrong but they don't feel right....I know i have no right to say anything since i suck at art but i think the biggest thing is the lines on the outer edges of the face pics.

No, I actually agree with you. I should fix that one of these days. It should be an easy fix, I just didn't know what I was doing at the time... Hopefully you like the game otherwise!

Edit: I re-uploaded the game after "fixing" the character portraits. Don't get me wrong, they still look terrible, but at least I was able to get rid of the lines on the outer edges. Hopefully that makes things a little bit better at least. Enjoy!

All the way up to 850 downloads is crazy to me, getting real close to 1000! I am all done putting work into this game, but I have actually been putting a lot of work into another game which is a bit more ambitious. A lot of stuff going on in real life right now (new baby!), but hopefully I can add that new game on here real soon. Hope everyone keeps enjoying this one though!

the game is corrupted
i downloaded the game, however
i wanted to extract the game and it doesnt run, please fix this problem

I'm sorry about that but thanks for letting me know! I'm not sure why that happened after it had been working for so long. Anyway, I re-uploaded a compressed file that is working for me now. So, give it a try and let me know if you are still having any trouble with it.

Hey!

I just finished playing your game, and want to tell you how much I enjoyed playing it.

In my opinion, this game deserves at least 4 stars, so the rating is a bit low. The game, being your first, is beautifully executed, there are no bugs, no glitches, no crushes, and most of all grammatically it's almost perfect, sans a few mistakes.

I hope you continue making games!

P.S.
What are all those switches in all the Inns did?

Thank you so much for the feedback, I love hearing it. This was my first game and I AM actually working on another game right now with another friend of mine with a much more widely known set of heroes (I'll put that up on this site one day soon enough).

The switches in all the Inns actually changed the music, only temporarily until you leave the inn. But there are about 10 of them placed throughout the game and they play some of my favorite music from old NES and SNES games, so hopefully you enjoy those. And thanks so much again for playing it!!

P.S. feel free to make another review for it, can boost up that rating! haha

I like games with variety, especialy if it puts any animal or other things instead of normal humans...I always put slimes!they're awesome!

Anyway, I played the game and I liked it for a story you and your friend wrote when you were young, I like it :)

Good luck on your next project.
Of course I hate this one :(

Very much enjoying this game robb.
BUT that tower is driving me crazy. I've been in it for several hours and can't seem to find that damn Cerberus. Since all my MadWarrior Cats and Dogs are at level 39 I will have no problem killing that rotten hell hound :)

Am I the only person who can't finish??????? :)
Even watched your walkthrough but it went to fast so the Cerberus still lives :)

Oh man! I'm sorry, but yeah, some of the maps are a bit too windy. In that tower if you follow the green moss at each turn, it will lead you the right way. All of the dungeons have some marker that tells you which way to go if you know to look for it. Sorry for all the frustrations though :/

Being that this is the first game I've ever made on here, I couldn't be more happy with the response its gotten. I leave for a bit and come back to see 400 downloads! I know that isn't a lot for most people, but I'm quite proud of it!

I had said that this was going to be the only game I was ever going to make, but I am currently working on something else with a different friend of mine. It would be a considerably bigger project than this one and a bit more attention to detail would probably be placed on it. It will also feature much more recognizable content and characters, but hopefully that can get made too. But thank you again to everybody for the support and wish us luck on the next project :)
I thought this game to be quite unique in using animals instead of people and it is a great game - have finished it but will replay so as to get the extras in the bonus dungeons -
