It's been 11 years since Zack went on his life changing adventure. He saved the world, secured his love interest and become a man in the process. While the citizens of the world may have forgotten his efforts; in favour of the newer younger heroes, inside Zack's chest still beats the heart of his teenage adventurous self, longing for the past. An encounter with another hero forgotten by time; Alex, may ignite sparks of heroism in both of them again. Or it might not, I guess you'll have to play it to find out.

A short and light-hearted RPG game created for the event "RPG Maker Venture" in which we had a single week to create a project, no longer than one hour; focused on the default RTP characters. Including features not limited to:

- A soundtrack ripped shamelessly from Lost Odyssey.
- First Seed Material graphics, mapped to an acceptable level.
- Humour that you might chuckle at occasionally.
- No random encounters.
- A barely modified default battle system.
- A final dungeon so rushed, it will make you wonder what I was even trying to do in the first place.
- It went on to win the contest, so surely that counts for something?

My fellow non-VX(Ace) breathren o/

Remind me to play this tomorrow!

EDIT: Oh, it says Completed, so I thought there'd be a download ;p
Sorry I hit the completed button yesterday before it was accepted. It will be complete tomorrow, I just have to finish the dialogue for the final two cut scenes shouldn't take long. The download will be up tomorrow.

Cool, looking forward to it!
just played through this and I really enjoyed it! I know you said you barely modified the DBS but I really liked the changes that you made, the battle system was pretty creative. you have a great sense of humor too, the writing was pretty fantastic. This game made me want to play White Magic again (hint hint)

Good luck in RM Venture!
Thank you Miracle, you're always leaving me such nice comments. I was really pushing the deadline towards the end, so some parts aren't tested properly. I'm so glad you managed to get to the end okay, and better still; you actually liked it.

If there's one thing I took from making this, it's forcing myself to push through and just do it. Hopefully I can take that attitude with me into White Magic too. Thanks again.

Hey man, trying to give this a go but I'm getting an error pop up saying that my RTP isn't installed - which it isn't (the 2k3 one) but it's still pretty weird considering it looks like all the necessary RTP files are in the right folders! Any idea what the problem might be?
I wish I could help, but I don't think I can. I don't have a great track record of actually releasing games so I don't know the best way to go about it haha. I manually copy-pasted all the correct files in the correct places, then I zipped up the folder. I didn't tick "Include RTP" when creating a gamedisk from inside the actual editor or anything like that.

The only RTP files I used were the battle animations, so I don't understand how you're getting the error immediately either. Sorry I can't help, but if you find I fix please let me know.

Oh, okay, the manual insertion's probably the issue then. ;p

Not a problem though, because I can download the RTP. It's just like 13.1 MB so I don't mind. Man, remember when downloading 13.1 MB was a big deal? Jesus Christ, I love technology.
One of the rules was to include the RTP, so I hope the judges can get it to work, that would suck to get disqualified now. I don't know how else I was supposed to do it though. I don't see anyone use the "Create Gamedisk" option, and it's buggy as all hell on my version of 2k3.

Oh well, hope it works for you now. Cheers.

That happened to me too! Just type 'FullPackageFlag=1' in RPG_RT.ini, save, and it should work immediately after that

Success! It's a Miracle! :p Thanks Miracle.

Will give thoughts soon!
I've just patched the download, so all should be fixed now for anyone else who downloads it. Thanks both of you!

I'm going to play Iris now, YM =)

Okay, just finished it and honestly, I couldn't find much wrong with this game, really (maybe because it's similiar to mine in so many ways)!

I liked the direction you took the DBS and your REFMAP mapping certainly put mine to shame, not to mention the writing (especially the ending) was spectacular. The line about Zack and the ether's probably one of the few to have ever made me laugh out loud in an RM game.

I guess if I were to NITPICK like some kinda Devil's Advocate, I'd say there were a few too many typos and run-on sentences, and I would have liked to have been able to do a bit more with Zack when facing off against the ghosts, but yeah, nothing major at all.

May the best man win! (P.S. thanks for playing my game, but please don't go easy on it just because I thought positively of Swan Song!)
FSM.... it's so good to see you again, FSM!
What a pleasant surprise.
Nice, little game! I liked the mapping, specially in the tower (vines everywhere = <3). And your choice of music was very "atmospheric".

The writing was good too, but one thing that did upset me about its presentation (Well, not "upset-upset", I just thought it was weird) was that you used the same message box to fit as much of a character's dialogue as possible. I guess that can work sometimes, but others, I feel it lessens the "impact" of some of the dialogue... Anyway, I loved the ending as well. You should expand on it as you intended.

Another thing that did upset me (more for realz this time =P) was that Alex was almost useless. Not because I like him and wanted him to be the hero of the game, but because he was dead weight most of the time; As was Zack when only Falron could dispose of ghost enemies: Their turns go to waste when they don't have to support. There should be alternatives to deal at least minimum damage.

All in all, a pretty enjoyable experience. Once again, you should fulfill your vision of the game and make it longer... harder, stronger. xD

Edit: Also, why is the game called "Swan song"? I probably missed that...
Edit:Edit: Oooh~ Interesting factoid... Thanks, NewBlack! =)
A swan song is a term for "a final act/action"

It comes from the folkloric belief that swans (I guess Mute Swans specifically?) only sing right before they die.

Oh and yeah, this does look kinda neat, a classic style 2k3 game in 2014, whee.

Edit: sorry I can't resist answering random trivia questions >_>
Thanks for the nice comments everyone. Reading any kind of feedback makes my day. Serious thanks for playing it <3

I always wanted to toy with the idea of a party member being unable to do damage, and thought this small game was the perfect chance. Instead of Alex's sword just being a joke, I extended into the game play as well. Even if I do go back to the game sometime, I will still keep Alex unable to deal damage, but enchance his support abilites. I can't and won't blame everything on being rushed, but it did affect my decision making. I agree with you 100% on everything you said though. I really enjoyed making the game, but if another contest comes along, I would have to have to be in a team of some sort just for my stress levels haha.

Yeah, thanks NewBlack. I chose it because Alex and Zack want to end their hero career with a bang, but as you complete the game, that doesn't exactly happen. Swan Song is kind of a play on words.

Thanks again.

This game was a lot of fun! Very well made, especially given the time constraints, and I liked the sense of humor :D
That was actually pretty funny. I also wondered what it would be like for a party where each character had defined functions (not all of them able to damage). Now that I've seen it, I'm glad I never went with it.

Best part in the whole game was when you first enter the tower! That scream was freaking hilarious!

I don't feel the ending was at all rushed. It was the perfect balance for what the game already proved to be.

Thanks?

But seriously, thanks for playing it and leaving a nice comment, that goes to all of you. Makes me feel great and like I'm on the right track with my main projects. You're the best.
