"There's more to the world than what your eyes can see."

A lonely Prefectural Guard, fed up of her work and looking for a way out.

An ever-so-slightly spoilt noble with a thirst for even more wealth, and perhaps a dash of adventure.

An angry, bitter man who bears a grudge against the rich.

What do you get you put them all together in an outdated engine with a DBS on steroids and a hip-hop soundtrack?

A game by Yellow Magic, that's what.

Join Alex and Helen as they embark on a journey they'll never forget...for better or for worse.

Features:
- Touch encounters. Rejoice.
- A DBS with some fairly unique modifications. You may have to worry more about the forces of nature than your enemies themselves.
- A number of bosses (although the last one's a relative pushover - because I really want you guys to see the end).
- A soundtrack comprised of notable hip-hop artists such as Michita, Nujabes (RIP) and Ras G.
- A few references here and there.
- A cameo by Don Miguel.

Created in less than a week for the RM Venture contest. Happy birthday, RPG Maker!

Sound Problems

It's come to my attention (thanks Unity) that there may be sound issues with the current download. Specifically, loud static noises instead of music.

This is probably due to Disharmony.dll not being setup correctly, or just plain not working. My bad.

Seeing as there are 21 people who've downloaded my game so far with only one person reporting anything, I want to make sure the problem's persisting on other peoples' PCs before attempting a fix.

Therefore, can I ask anyone who downloaded my game to please let me know if they are experiencing any sort of sound issues, AND whether or not they have DirectX 9.0 (or greater) installed. At the very least, music should be playing in the title screen, and if it's not, that's a problem.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks :D I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know whether the game has installed correctly (including the music playing - but that doesn't happen till 5 minutes into the game :<) whenever you get around to playing it.

Just started the game and I'm enjoying it so far, but I'm not sure if the music's working properly? When monsters are around, there is this loud, static-y noise that drowns out the sound effects and is a bit headache-inducing. Is anyone else getting that or is it just a problem on my computer's end?

Thanks for giving it a go. :D

About the static-y noise: When you say "when monsters are around", do you mean when you're traversing maps or when you're in battle?

EDIT: Oh, and does the title screen music play? Or is that static as well?

It first starts when slimes first appear, even before the battle starts, and carries throughout the battle. It also happens in maps with monsters in them. I'm also not getting any title screen music, just silence.

My computer's six plus years old, so maybe it's a problem on my end? I'm not sure; I'm usually able to run RPGMaker 2000 games fine (tho they do crash sometimes)

Oh, crap, sounds like the Disharmony patch is acting up (which is weird because I tested it a hundred times on my laptop and it works fine).

Do you have DirectX 9.0 or greater installed? If so, I can attempt a fix later, but I can't guarantee anything, sorry. :( Damn antique RM engine...

I have the latest version of DirectX installed. However, I downloaded the game on a laptop and it works just fine; there's music on the title screen and a really catchy tune where there used to be static. Not sure exactly what's wrong with my desktop computer (other than it being old) but if I play it on this laptop, it seems it'll be fine.

Sorry to worry you over what's probably nothing; I really should have thought to try it on the lappy before ^^;;

That's a relief! Thanks for the heads up, regardless, because I'm sure you won't be the only one experiencing this issue.

Just to make sure: Did you ever install the Disharmony Audio Patch on your laptop, by any chance?

No, I don't recall ever installing that on the laptop. Will that help the game work on my desktop?

Oh. Well, At first I thought the Disharmony.dll that I included with the project folder wasn't linking properly. However, if it worked on your laptop without Disharmony being setup prior, that means Disharmony.dll is being recognised correctly. Therefore, I don't think installing Disharmony on your desktop would help. Sorry! (You could always try, though, if you're desperate ;p)

It could also be an OS issue or a sound-card one, but I doubt it...

Again, thanks very much for your help, Unity!
Just completed this, I now ship Helen x Alex (Henlex) forever, that ending man, so cruel. I didn’t have any issues with the dialogue or story, I enjoyed how it was funny and light, but also had moments of real heart towards the end too. Alex, and especially Helen are good characters. I personally didn’t like how some textboxes closed on there own due to characters interrupting each other. I think that works best when you have voice acting or something, but as it was just text, it was a bit jarring at times. The could be a personal gripe though.

The battle system is really unique, liked the idea a lot. It’s made good use of, as the best way to win is by amplifying the skill of the current Mana field, rather than the field effects just being thrown of top of a default battle system. It’s surprising deep and I definitely see it working in a longer game, but I felt like there was quite a lot to take it right at the start. The Mana fields + Helen and Alex play differently from each other + already loads of skills at level one for both characters, some of which I never made use of.

I also liked that not all enemies are set move to hero, or move randomly. Some of them follow a set path and you have to dodge them, and the forest complements that by being spacious, but not big and devoid of detail. The cave was a lot more cramped, made it harder to avoid enemies, but it wasn’t an annoyance. I did probably avoid more than I fought haha. This may have made me under levelled as I did think it was difficult, as I had some unexpected deaths. Loads of chances to buy items though, so it’s more a case of me not paying attention probably. Overall a good entry, more pros than cons and being able to skip the cave puzzle was a nice touch! I’d definitely like to play Gotta Clean Up The World now!

Two bugs I found:

-You can abuse Alex’s skill outside of battle to restore his MP, and then fully heal the party before a battle.
- The ending cutscene plays on loop, it never goes back to the title screen.

Welp, those are some pretty fantastic bugs. I was sure I fixed the title screen issue but now I realise I had two versions of the game lying around in the end! Sorry about those :( Will fix in version 2.0 for sure.

Funny that mention shipping Alex x Helen: I actively tried to avoid anything suggesting more than a platonic relationship. ;< Mind me asking what gave you that idea? (You can PM me if you like, in case you're worried about spoilers ;p)

With regards to knowledge overload: I did try my best not to make it too complex, but I'll agree that there might have been too many skills - at least in the case of Helen, whose status condition spells I never had to use in my own playthroughs. :\ Hopefully I haven't made a Crazegame by mistake lol (just kidding Craze please don't hurt me)

About the text - yeah, I think I might have overdid the interruptions now that you mention it. ;p

Thanks alot for your feedback LWG - much appreciated! And hopefully I'll get back to GCUPTW soon: It's not dead by a long shot. :D
To be honest there isn't anything that hints at a possible relationship, that's what shipping's all about, isn't it? My other pairing is Captain American x Santa Claus. I don't care what anyone says, they really love each other!

Oh, don't get me wrong, it wasn't overly complex, it just didn't build up to itself. Everything you have in the first battle, is exactly what you have in the final boss. So you have all these skills at once, and you're like a kid in a sweet shop. I don't think you did anything wrong, I'm just saying I would have approached it differently; in my own way. I think I'm too used to playing JRPGs where they take 15 hours to give you the full battle system. Anyway, that's why I said it might be better suited to a longer game.

Woah, really? Man, I don't even know: I'm too old for this shit. ;(

Yeah, I understand where you're coming from honestly. All the elemental stuff had to be there from the get-go, though, otherwise I don't think the whole ~4 different fields~ thing would have worked.

I was actually thinking of giving one of the playable characters the ability to change Mana Fields themselves around the half-way point but then decided against it because I thought it'd make the game too easy. Wonder if I should have gone ahead with that. Hmm..

I meant to finish playing this game sooner but got sidetracked, but I finished it today! I had a lot of fun with it! ^_^ I've left some feedback for it on this page on the RM Venture topic.

Yep, just seen it. Glad you enjoyed the game and many thanks for the feedback! I'll get around to fixing the tileset issues as soon as I can, and FWIW I agree that the Earth field's a bit of a weird one...will see what I can do!
Nujabes eh -thumb of approval- Too bad I can't play it on my current computer ><

Nj on the game though!
