Clouded Heart is a plot- and character-heavy RPG that follows the story of Marth and Kathrin as they are sent tumbling into a world of lies, deceit and secrets. They must learn to rely on each other and their new-found friends if they are to survive and grow as people.
Clouded Heart was made in RM2k and utilizes hand-drawn anime-esque portraits. The biggest draw of the game is the great plot and characterisation of each of the main characters, as well as the well-connected world around them and the written elements of the game itself. There are issues with some grammar and spelling but for the most part the written portions of the game are very well done and certain scenes stick in the memory for quite a while.
Where the game does falter is the graphical components. Mapping is, in a word, quite lacklustre, but considering the era in which the game was initially completed, it's understandable as to why this is the case. Battles, too, are quite easy on the player but this is not necessarily a bad thing, as it allows easy access to the story beyond.
A classic tale that delves into relationships, learning to trust and the pain of loneliness without preaching to the audience, Clouded Heart has a lot to offer those who can look past the graphical issues and enjoy the game for what it is - a story of a boy and girl learning how to reach out to those around them for the support to stand up to the challenges ahead. Also, pretty neat plot twists.
