I am quitting Wyrm Warriors

I no longer enjoy working on Wyrm Warriors. In fact, I haven't since an incident nearly a year ago between me and one of the contributors. Aside from adding a quest system, laying out towns and making several dungeon maps, not a whole lot has been done since the initial release.

I have decided to quit the project. I'm leaving the current build up for anyone who cares to grab it. There are a few contributed locations with maps missing, but I will add those in tonight.

I'm someone who prides herself on finishing what she starts, so deciding to drop this isn't something I take lightly. For a long time, I told myself that I'd power through it, but every second I spend on it is time I wish I was working on something else. I took breaks and tried to come back to the game, but every time it was the same: the same lack of enjoyment and void of enthusiasm.

I told myself "you HAVE to do this, make a big status declaring your intent and get the next installment out, no matter how un-fun it is." But after a couple of days, I already found myself wanting to do anything else but continuing. Making games is my hobby, but it's not a job, and I just can't put my time, energy, and love into something I no longer enjoy making.

I sincerely apologize to you all, especially to those who have made maps and characters. I will refrain from running community projects in the future to prevent this sort of catastrophe from happening again.

What does this mean for the future of Wyrm Warriors? Is the game dead? That's up to you. As I took over the project when Craze was done with it, someone can step up and take the lead if they wish. Or, it can be completely run by the community. Or it can end here and be forgotten. I leave it entirely in your hands, but I must take my leave.

Again, I am very sorry. -_-

First Liberty, now Ratty. How many community games are being made right now? I thought this was the only one?
I got the Valentine's one to finish. Ratty has the Pokemon one.

Uhh... I've been working on Pokemon RMN Version for almost two years now. o_o

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Last King of Hyrule is still in progress as well. I somehow got conned into running that one!

Also, Cap_H is in the process of trying to start a new chain game called Chain of Love. Perhaps he and the other people interested in it could be redirected here.

Running a community game and then abandoning it is like a rite of passage. unity is RMN administrator material.

Wait, so if I abandon Castles 2 I can be considered for administrator?
Nah, considered is too strong a word.
You might make it in to staff, the bar for that is pretty low and abandoning a community game might be what you need to clear that hurdle!

Had a bit of a brain fart there. I don't know why I forgot about those. Especially the Pokemon one. As for the Valentine's game, it slipped my mind because it's been so long and I thought that it just got abandoned.

Do chain-games count? I seem to recall reviewing a demo for a chain game some time ago, and I don't think it's moved an inch since then!

*Edit: This game is the one I'm talking about.

What? No no no no no, that's now how it works here! First attempts at making a community game always go south here on RMN! It's expected that you'll have to rethink your approach and try anew in a few months time taking the lessons you learned from your previous attempt to make a community game. Why, just look at the RMN Bros games to see how well that turned out!

don't take advice from me on if you should run a community game

Do you remember the 2 (or has it been 3 now?) community RPGs I tried to start?

Running a community game and then abandoning it is like a rite of passage. unity is RMN administrator material.

Hahaha, wow, thanks XD;;

I just really don't wanna disappoint people, so if I ever did anything like this again, it would have to be really scaled back to something managable. I could do a game with 4-5 characters and 3-6 hours of gameplay, no problem. I don't know if you could call something that small a community game, tho.

At the end of the day, you will always be more important than a game. You need to do what is best for you and it's pretty obvious from the comments no-one has a problem with that, so don't stress about it. Make it a learning experience, that way you can look back on it as a journey you needed to make to learn what you did.

Thank you for the kind and thoughtful words, nhubi ^_^

I can't say I know much about this project, but good on you for making a tough choice!

Thanks, mawk! ^_^

If I wasn't tied up with my own community project I'd gladly take over. I wonder what was specifically unenjoyable about working on this project, though?

Still, I respect your decision.

Thanks, Ratty! About what was unenjoyable, there was a long-lasting incident involving a contributor that really killed the spark I once had with the game. Add to that the giant scope I'd allowed the game to become, and the fact that writing other people's characters turned out to not be such a comfortable thing for me, and I quickly lost the ability to focus and carry on. -_-
something small-scale can definitely be a community game! casting back to the old rmvx forums, there were totally community games that revolved around a couple of members' characters doing something silly and self-referential. you'd get huge community-wide stuff like Who Killed Touchfuzzy, of course, but there were also plenty of Sevith & Jonny's Rockin' Adventures.

in general, you shouldn't have to worry about scale at all -- if it's fun for one or two hours (or half an hour, or fifteen minutes!), then it's fun, you know? your time spent on a game is never wasted, even if you have to quit or it winds up being smaller than you expected.

I'm still making Fast Times at Aremen High, although that's more of a fangame, and it's hardly off the ground by any means.

It's all good, unity. If you don't find it enjoyable, that's a really valid reason to let someone else have a go. This is a hobby, not a job. Still, I'd like to thank you for all the work you've put into the version we've got, which will prove useful to future versions.

A small selection of people I can think of who I think might rock in the position of helming this project: Craze (back to the original :P), NeverSilent, Red Nova (don't know how busy he is with personal projects), Magi (idk if he/she would be willing), slash (not sure how he plays with RM games but in my experience with Unity he's very skilled and I think that game design would transfer over).

But really, Ratty would be a great pick if he weren't already so busy with Pokemon RMN. Sellsword was the best ^_^

edit: that said, I'm really looking forward to Pokemon RMN now that I realize the capable hands it has been put in. Not that I wasnt hyped before, I just hadn't played a Ratty game so I was unaware what skill was behind it :P

But on the subject of unity stepping down, I've gotta say, those are some huge boots to fill. :)

Even though I understand your decision, unity, I'm crying a little inside. Wyrm Warriors is/was one of the projects on this site I've been looking forward to seeing completed the most. I'm not going to pretend I'm happy with this turn of events, but sometimes you got to have priorities. And if you felt uncomfortable developing this game, that's something nobody would want and reason enough to quit. Taking this decision wasn't easy, I'm sure, and it's obvious you didn't just do it on a whim.

P.S.:

I'm flattered you think I'm among the people who would be able to continue this project - and in fact, I had offered unity to design the puzzles for Wyrm Warriors before. However, I usually don't work in VX Ace and don't know much about the engine's workings, plus I have very little skill in scripting.
If at some point a group of people would want to continue Wyrm Warriors together, I'd be happy to be a part of that, but I'm definitely incapable of taking a project like this over as lead developer.

Rest in peace Wyrm Warriors.

Be at ease and relax Unity. You did your best and it just didn't work out.
There is no point in grinding yourself down, so walk away with your head held high.

Keep the spirits high! :)
