I am quitting Wyrm Warriors

I no longer enjoy working on Wyrm Warriors. In fact, I haven't since an incident nearly a year ago between me and one of the contributors. Aside from adding a quest system, laying out towns and making several dungeon maps, not a whole lot has been done since the initial release.

I have decided to quit the project. I'm leaving the current build up for anyone who cares to grab it. There are a few contributed locations with maps missing, but I will add those in tonight.

I'm someone who prides herself on finishing what she starts, so deciding to drop this isn't something I take lightly. For a long time, I told myself that I'd power through it, but every second I spend on it is time I wish I was working on something else. I took breaks and tried to come back to the game, but every time it was the same: the same lack of enjoyment and void of enthusiasm.

I told myself "you HAVE to do this, make a big status declaring your intent and get the next installment out, no matter how un-fun it is." But after a couple of days, I already found myself wanting to do anything else but continuing. Making games is my hobby, but it's not a job, and I just can't put my time, energy, and love into something I no longer enjoy making.

I sincerely apologize to you all, especially to those who have made maps and characters. I will refrain from running community projects in the future to prevent this sort of catastrophe from happening again.

What does this mean for the future of Wyrm Warriors? Is the game dead? That's up to you. As I took over the project when Craze was done with it, someone can step up and take the lead if they wish. Or, it can be completely run by the community. Or it can end here and be forgotten. I leave it entirely in your hands, but I must take my leave.

Again, I am very sorry. -_-

Also generally nobody cares WHY the lady ordered pizza without any cash on hand.
In a porno, no- in a mystery, maybe.
Excus eme if i wasn't celare how far the meaphop went. OK guys

We were literally talking about it being a porno thing. Do you respond to discussions about where to go for lunch with, "Well, we could get a Hardee's sausage biscuit if it were breakfast"?
In a discussion, no- in a screwball comedy, maybe.

By the way, who ordered the Bacon'n'egg MacGuffin? Sides: medium-sized fried back story and plot twist for the drink. Any takers?
This entire conversation is half-baked and i should not have cooked it up.*worries he may have doomed the project*

Don't worry. What's done is done, and it's all in the past. I'm moving on.

The past is fine to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there, and as Proust rightly said, Remembrance of things past is not necessarily the remembrance of things as they were.

Porn, Pizza and Proust. This went OT fast.
This blog post probably holds the record now for most numbers of replies. XD

Oh don't Luchi, Kentona will probably add that as an end of month statistic. ;).

Buzz generators, unite. Let's make this a stat to remember.

But on a more serious note, I'm happy about the future of WW and the hands that it looks be to be transferred to, just from the look of things. If you guys would like my help for puzzle or mechanic design, feel free to call. Even if it may not fit the spirit of the happy go lucky RPG.
Lots of fun off-topic posts, yay! Anyway:

The story in a video game is like the story in a porno. You can put one in if you want, but it's not important, and we certainly don't expect it to be any good.

Well, you know I and plenty of people disagree. More importantly, though, I'm not sure quoting Carmack really helps your case, given that after he said that quote, he went on to make an utterly generic post-apocalyptic game that's only remembered nowadays for it's complete failure at real-time rendering. Right now, he's pretty much an irrelevance in the gaming world, which is a pretty good proof that he might've had actually gotten it wrong.

Okay, serious reply now. Normally, I would strongly object to the idea that the story in a game is unimportant - but I think that in this case, we can all agree that plot was never the central focus of Wyrm Warriors to begin with. The one and only thing that is important right now is to actually get some more of the game (and by that I mean gameplay and progression) done. It's totally cool to dream about what we could all add to make the game even better or more interesting, but none of that is any good if there is not even a game to begin with. Let's get done what we really need first before we worry about what we could maybe do as well.

As for you, BurningTyger, you constantly keep trying to completely reshape the entire project to fit your own vision (even though the concept had been decided on long ago by Craze, unity and the community). At the same time, you've hardly contributed anything substantial. Your enthusiasm is appreciated, but please either put all that energy into something that actually helps the project (for example your which maps you still haven't finished) or refrain from messing with the project altogether if you can't control yourself.
You do not have to respond to this post.

I hope we can stop wasting our energy on nonsensical, destructive arguments now and get Wyrm Warriors going again as a team. CashmereCat, you've made a good start, and I'll make sure to contact you soon to discuss some puzzle ideas. Thanks a lot!

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Right, the guy who made Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein, and then founded and ran the Oculus Rift company until it was bought by Facebook for $400 million, is irrelevant and is only remembered as a failure, and therefore I am not allowed to quote his flippant joke to make my own flippant joke.
@ NeverSilent: Yeah, I'll just leave you guys to it, I guess. Hope you get it done and it's successful overall.

@ LockeZ: My point was that those three unquestionable successes were back then, at the 3D gaming's inception. When he tried to follow that same approach in modern times, it led to abject failure. He realised that, which is why he stepped away from actually designing games and found unquestionable success in creating VR hardware for games.

Yeah, I guess I can't think of any recent games with minimal plot that were wildly successful and good. Not a single goddam game.

Plot and character in games can be fun, but the important thing in games is gameplay. You can have a great game with minimal writing.

(I'd also argue that games are really not an ideal medium for the kind of complex shit JRPGs and the like are known for. Like, if you seriously think any video game stacks up to other media in terms of characterization, please go read more books.)

OK I'm done babbling and we should probably take this to the garme discussion forum if we really want to pursue it.

I'll shut my mouth and open my program to continue work on the map.
@ Sooz: Three multiplayer games, a digital LEGO equivalent, and a game that lacked particularly complex plot but was praised for its characters just about any time it's mentioned? Quite frankly, not the best examples to compare to this very-much-singleplayer project with rather traditional gameplay mechanics on the whole. The case looks even weaker given that the same timeframe also gave us the unquestionably successful (even if controversial) Dear Esther, The Stanley Parable and Gone Home, + the constant stream of Telltale games, which have barely more gameplay than the previous examples.

The rest is indeed best discussed at the forums, since there's much scope for debate and interpretation. I doubt I would be able participate in such full-fledged discussion at the moment, unfortunately (maybe in a month's time?)
