I am quitting Wyrm Warriors

I no longer enjoy working on Wyrm Warriors. In fact, I haven't since an incident nearly a year ago between me and one of the contributors. Aside from adding a quest system, laying out towns and making several dungeon maps, not a whole lot has been done since the initial release.

I have decided to quit the project. I'm leaving the current build up for anyone who cares to grab it. There are a few contributed locations with maps missing, but I will add those in tonight.

I'm someone who prides herself on finishing what she starts, so deciding to drop this isn't something I take lightly. For a long time, I told myself that I'd power through it, but every second I spend on it is time I wish I was working on something else. I took breaks and tried to come back to the game, but every time it was the same: the same lack of enjoyment and void of enthusiasm.

I told myself "you HAVE to do this, make a big status declaring your intent and get the next installment out, no matter how un-fun it is." But after a couple of days, I already found myself wanting to do anything else but continuing. Making games is my hobby, but it's not a job, and I just can't put my time, energy, and love into something I no longer enjoy making.

I sincerely apologize to you all, especially to those who have made maps and characters. I will refrain from running community projects in the future to prevent this sort of catastrophe from happening again.

What does this mean for the future of Wyrm Warriors? Is the game dead? That's up to you. As I took over the project when Craze was done with it, someone can step up and take the lead if they wish. Or, it can be completely run by the community. Or it can end here and be forgotten. I leave it entirely in your hands, but I must take my leave.

Again, I am very sorry. -_-

Aw, uni, don't fret about it. If you're not feeling it, we understand. It's a long-ass project and it's probably worn you out.

Personally, I vote we don't give it to just some random person but actually vote who to pass it on to... or get Craze to come back. :DDD

Honestly, I'm looking forward to it being finished but I can understand a project outstaying it's welcome. Rest easy in the assurance that you did a good job and that we appreciate your hard work. >.<)b

Thanks, Libby ;_;
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I'm sad, but I'm not astonished. The project is an awesome idea, but a ton of work that will result in a game you won't really feel like you were the creator of.

Now taking applications for the role of Craze! Who wants to be Craze #3?
Hm... I would... if I didn't already owe the community a game. Which I will be getting back on to soon.

onetwothree NOT IT!
...I refuse to leave this game in a certain someone's hands. Absolutely refuse.

You made the right choice here, unity. If you're not having fun making it, then there's no point in forcing yourself, especially if the lack of enjoyment has been going on for as long as you say.

Can I make a suggestion for anyone who wants to become Craze #3 (not me. I've got enough on my plate)? I think the role of actual development may be too much for any one person to handle. Instead of having one person implementing maps, assets, etc. I think it may be wise to form a small development team to handle different aspects. One could be in charge of dialogue and eventing, another could focus on battle balancing, etc. The person taking over as Craze #3 would have their section of development, but also take on the role of coordinating the other developers to make sure the project would stay on track.

Anyway, that's my two cents.
I can have this finished by 2026

This is a good plan. I mean, this was p. much a community game from the start, so having a team makes good sense.

Yo, let's not get too optimistic here!

Good deal, unity. I know it's super hard to give up on a project, but you got a million games in your future :D Leaving one behind is sometimes the best move!

You did the thing! Good for you.

It's funny, this was supposed to be a really shitty project like Epic Monster Dungeon Explore! 2, but people really latched onto it and their characters. I still want to do a simple game like that someday, not for a good while though. If I did, I'd have a more solid plan for the game's outline and say "no" to a lot more ideas, haha...

But anyway, I'm not a fan of chain games so Red_Nova's suggestion is the best idea imo. It's way too difficult for a single person alone.

Thanks. Yeah, I like the team aspect. It's way too much for one person to tackle.

Thanks, Slash! It's hard not to beat myself up a bit over this, but I'm trying, as doing so doesn't really help anyone XD;; And I have truly learned from this experience, so that's good.

Thanks again for lending an ear. That really helped me. ^_^

I imagine that, because you're such a hard worker, you overextended yourself to such a degree that a breaking point was achieved. I'm not saying that you made the wrong decision. A project had to be dropped to relieve some of the stress. It just so happened that this one was, probably, causing the most stress.

I apologize if I'm reading too much into this, or am too blunt.

This is not correct. I'll cop immediately to being too enthusiastic and starting too many new projects. But I can keep working on those projects because I enjoy working on them. Like I said on the blog, I couldn't enjoy working on this project, even though I've been trying to do so for about a year.

What I wrote in the blog is the truth of the matter. Out of the seven games on my profile, I've completed five of them, so I don't think I have a problem generally delivering finished projects.

What? No no no no no, that's now how it works here! First attempts at making a community game always go south here on RMN! It's expected that you'll have to rethink your approach and try anew in a few months time taking the lessons you learned from your previous attempt to make a community game. Why, just look at the RMN Bros games to see how well that turned out!

don't take advice from me on if you should run a community game
Do you remember the 2 (or has it been 3 now?) community RPGs I tried to start?

Running a community game and then abandoning it is like a rite of passage. unity is RMN administrator material.

I feel like this literally almost always happens? about half the games on my 'hey maybe do this someday' list started out as silly fire-and-forget self-referential things which just kind of ballooned into a state where I had to go 'well, fuck, now I can't just make this a community game'. it takes a lot of pressure off to do this sort of thing, and I guess that's kind of an ideal environment to come up with more seriously-scaled things. like, I had to dump a fun-sounding collaboration with Sevith a while back because I got carried away and started thinking of it as something way more ambitious than either of us meant for it to be.

I can't say I know much about this project, but good on you for making a tough choice!

At the end of the day, you will always be more important than a game. You need to do what is best for you and it's pretty obvious from the comments no-one has a problem with that, so don't stress about it. Make it a learning experience, that way you can look back on it as a journey you needed to make to learn what you did.

If I wasn't tied up with my own community project I'd gladly take over. I wonder what was specifically unenjoyable about working on this project, though?

Still, I respect your decision.
