I am quitting Wyrm Warriors

I no longer enjoy working on Wyrm Warriors. In fact, I haven't since an incident nearly a year ago between me and one of the contributors. Aside from adding a quest system, laying out towns and making several dungeon maps, not a whole lot has been done since the initial release.

I have decided to quit the project. I'm leaving the current build up for anyone who cares to grab it. There are a few contributed locations with maps missing, but I will add those in tonight.

I'm someone who prides herself on finishing what she starts, so deciding to drop this isn't something I take lightly. For a long time, I told myself that I'd power through it, but every second I spend on it is time I wish I was working on something else. I took breaks and tried to come back to the game, but every time it was the same: the same lack of enjoyment and void of enthusiasm.

I told myself "you HAVE to do this, make a big status declaring your intent and get the next installment out, no matter how un-fun it is." But after a couple of days, I already found myself wanting to do anything else but continuing. Making games is my hobby, but it's not a job, and I just can't put my time, energy, and love into something I no longer enjoy making.

I sincerely apologize to you all, especially to those who have made maps and characters. I will refrain from running community projects in the future to prevent this sort of catastrophe from happening again.

What does this mean for the future of Wyrm Warriors? Is the game dead? That's up to you. As I took over the project when Craze was done with it, someone can step up and take the lead if they wish. Or, it can be completely run by the community. Or it can end here and be forgotten. I leave it entirely in your hands, but I must take my leave.

Again, I am very sorry. -_-

NTC3, there was never supposed to really be any story attached to the characters. 90% of their dialogue was already written by the people who created them in the original thread.

Well, one idea is to rejigger that somewhat, shifting the emphasis towards characters and their quests.

That would make MORE work, not less.
Or not and leave it as it was supposed to be so that interfering fingers don't. :/

The person who caused the stress was probably the one who sent a shit ton of PMs to her over a very short period. They know who they are.

Pretty sure that's me... :( Anyway, not meaning to create more work no, we don't need that. However, I noted that the FFIII remake is said to have used its characters' back stories to "Accelerate the plot". In a way we've been using bits of character back story to help us figure out where they go: Hitori, who hails from another dimension, was planned to appear in the Quartz Quarry, while Blaize, who uses fire, was to appear on Mount Arazia, possibly there in an attempt to conquer his fears of said element. Similarly, having Blaize in the pary might encourage fellow Fire-user Weylan to join, or Weylan might join the party to rescue his acquaintance Blaize from Arazia before it erupts.

BT, you ever hear of "scope creep"?

What we need is super basic point A -> point B stuff, not backstories. Anything outside the info provided in the original thread doesn't matter.

True, though following Unity's suggested plans here would not be a bad idea; I only meant, "maybe there's something in the info we can use to help drive the party between points, so we don't have to rely so much on MacGuffins..."

There does not need to be a reason beyond maguffins. "Thing there, go get," has been a tried and true videro game plot for decades.

True; I guess as a player of many JRPGS I'm sometimes a bit too focused on story. Not every game needs to rival a Final Fantasy for plot...
...have you played the original Final Fantasy?

Yes, including on the original NES, though I don't believe I managed to get very far until replaying it in Origins. I'd been referring to 4 onwards, but point taken. :P
Well, I didn't check this for a couple of days, and now my quote had led to this mini-argument. Interesting, especially since I kind of see both points.

True.

Also true (although I haven't played it.) However, that was how many years ago exactly? The world has indeed moved on, even if our engines is limited to the glory days of late 80's/early 90's.

I certainly understand the scope creep, and a detailed story with 30 characters would not really work, unless split over several instalments to create RMN version of Game of Thrones (someone totally ought to consider that the next time, BTW.)

However, I do kind of wonder for whom the finished product will really be for. It's said that the 30 characters are the core of the project and stuff, but does it really matter to someone who wasn't present during those discussions, and who will only see a bunch of interchangeable faces with somewhat different skill selections, most of which would not even be needed for completing the game?

I do suppose that an RMN community game should be oriented towards said community first and foremost, but this is not one of those Mario level packs anymore. People are prepared to put in some real effort, and it's worth asking whether that would justify a game that gets a couple hundred downloads post-completion and then sits there gathering digital dust. (AKA, the fate of nearly every other community game I've seen on here so far.) Sure, you can always bring Hero's Realm as a counter-point, but that had power of nostalgia that this doesn't really seem to have. The only other successful example of story-lacking JRPG on here I can think of is Wine & Roses, and that also had a rather different specific with its boss-only approach.

Again, I'm only trying to present outsider's perspective of the project: the last thing I want to do is offend anyone on here.

Wyrm Warriors is about the gam mak journey, not the gam mad destination.
^ And that gam mak journey had burnt out our second veteran developer. Forgive me for being a little skeptical.
Admission: I do like it that Hero's Realm is brought up as a counterpoint or exception in generalized arguments/discussions, such as this.

LOL dude you realise I'm a lot more aware of the cause of that second burnout, right? The lack of extensive character junk was not the issue.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

The story in a video game is like the story in a porno. You can put one in if you want, but it's not important, and we certainly don't expect it to be any good.

See, I'd consider FFVI a novel... but not all tales are novels.

In a porno, no- in a mystery, maybe.

We were literally talking about it being a porno thing. Do you respond to discussions about where to go for lunch with, "Well, we could get a Hardee's sausage biscuit if it were breakfast"?

In a discussion, no- in a screwball comedy, maybe.

By the way, who ordered the Bacon'n'egg MacGuffin? Sides: medium-sized fried back story and plot twist for the drink. Any takers?

This entire conversation is half-baked and i should not have cooked it up.*worries he may have doomed the project*
