Game Design

Making a game grants XP too

Hello everybody!

While working on a new location I realised that the cellar of River's bakery had no light except for the oven.
So I added a torch on the wall near the entrance.

That was unrealistic. How do you light the oven in the dark?
It's easy to get past some details when you're focused on something else.
Now, with a step back and more experience in mapping, I see some mistakes here and there like the cellar.

Speaking of lighting, I've taken screenshots of locations before/after lighting overlays.
With a little editing to tiles and some basic knowledge of Gimp, you can transform a flat scene into a more appealing one quite easily.

The city of Valbois (my very first map for the game actually) needs an overhaul too, but that would take too much time that I prefer spending on creating new content.

Speaking of which, I've almost finished Ian's next mission. But that will be the subject of another blog entry soon after I finish testing it.

Stay tuned for upcoming great screenshots!

What you (probably) haven't seen

Hello everybody!

I was looking back at how Bleeding Moons looked like at its beginning and thought you might find it interesting too.
At first, I wasn't confident in my drawing skill so I used the integrated facemaker generator of VX Ace. It was fine, but I wanted something more for the main female characters as they are the bleeding moons. So I used bust shots for them and small facesets for the others, including Ian the main male character.

As you can imagine, it caused an inconsistency in the game's visuals.
For a game that relies on its story and characters, I had to fix it.
Either all small facesets or all busts. I went for the all busts.

So I've spent an entire month drawing new elements to be used for the busts, especially the eyes but also noses, clothes, hair... that were not available in the vanilla bust generator.
There's no way I can draw a complete bust from scratch (yet?) but I think it went well enough to be shown.

Here are a few before/after shots with their corresponding sprite.
If you haven't played the old demo (before the actual v0.4) you've probably never seen these old facesets.
