Dreaming Mary is an original adventure game in a sidescrolling format, made using the free RPG Maker VX Ace Lite. It is inspired by the Japanese horror game Ib and the abstract game Yume Nikki, and is influenced by the indie platformer Eversion as well as the TV show Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. Despite these influences, Dreaming Mary is not exactly a horror game. It does contain horror elements, though they might never be encountered by a player who chooses to indulge in the dreams instead of investigating.

The game's average playtime ranges from fifteen to twenty-five minutes to reach one ending, and there are four endings. In the game you are able to interact with items and NPCs. It is important to pay attention to dialogue and to your surroundings in order to proceed. Sound is vital in this game and can help the player move forward as well as provide hints to the situation Mary has found herself in.

This game is not intended for children or those of a nervous disposition and may contain triggering content. Please play with headphones or high audio in a quiet room. There are four endings and bonus content is available after all four have been achieved in one game file. For hints and information, please see the game's homepage at the bottom of the description.

STORY

Mary is a girl who loves to dream. In fact, she loves to dream so much she can spend an entire day dreaming. One day, when she falls asleep, she finds herself in a nostalgic place very different from her other dreams. Everyone there knows her and treats her like an old friend, and they invite her to play with them or help them. When she finishes all of their tasks, she is invited deeper into the dream.

Will you lead her to fall into her dreams? Or will you bring her back to the waking world?

As the player, you have the choice in the final decision of Mary's final dream.

FEATURES

ACE LITE CHALLENGE
Dreaming Mary was originally created and completed in RMVX Ace Lite. It was ported to the full version of Ace afterwards, but still conforms to many of the original restrictions of the Lite software, such as:
*No more than 20 maps
*Only 10 events per map
*No more than 10 common events
*Limit of 100 switches and variables
*No call common event option

The full Ace software was needed for file encryption and font change. Mithran's Text Cache script is used as well as a single line of call script in the game's eventing.

4/19: Updated download link added!
Fixed bugs:
-Premature notification of the 4 endings
-Removal of script which caused ‘sound file not found’

Still active bug(s):
-Bonus mode freeze from painting (please only activate bonus mode before the 'turning point' of the game)

Produced by Accha (story, art, programming, voice)

A game with a lot of symbolism involved~
This game blew my mind story-wise and graphically-wise, and let's not forget the great music that supported them! I'm really hoping to see more games like this in the future as it's those types of games that stays encrypted in our minds forever!

The only issue I had at the beginning was not knowing how to talk to the first NPC; it left me wandering for a while until I looked up the comments on here for help. A little advice or any indication in-game about that would have been helpful but that did not hinder my playthrough at all in the long-run~

I'm looking forward to play more games of this genre as it's truly the genre we need more of. It brings us to worlds that are thought-provoking and very inducing.
I must say that the amount of time I spent on playing this wonderful game was more than an hour or two...and in my book, that is definitely a good thing! Congrats to your success, I'll be keeping my eye out for your future projects! -subs-
CaptainCube, Lexyvil, and TheLovelyBones, thanks so much for playing and commenting! We'll definitely try to make more and better games of this nature (once June's competition is done, at least). The next game of the series is planned out, and with any luck we'll have it finished by November 25 =w=)b

@Lexyvil hehe yup, you're not the only one who got stuck there! That's something I'll be fixing up in the newer games so that people won't have to suffer the frustration of standing in the exact right spot to talk XD
Why? Why Mary is {spoiler} her friends? Why this game has creepy notes and images? Nor fair T_T

Great game, btw.
May I please use the music from this game in a game of my own? (It's not even a real game just one for me, my family, and friends to enjoy.) Also while I'm here I want to say that I absolutely loved this game! (Not that it's surprising I do love Madoka Magica and Ib!)
@Dragol muwahaha >:)

@Taigako, Trass says it's A-OK to use the soundtrack for personal work, as long as you provide proper credits! ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ
how do you put a download on your game?????????

how do you put a download on your game?????????

Once your game is approved by moderation you can add the download to your game page =)
Boaris sort of reminds me of the creepy guy from the movie, The Lovely Bones. Is this the vibe you intended to give with him?

Great game! I love the cuteness and as a musician, I really appreciate the music!

Edit: I just realized there was a user named TheLovelyBones on this topic. Coincidence? I think not >_<
I cried playing this game when I discovered what was really going on, I felt really sad after playing this. I love the style, the voices, everything about this game was so unique.
I'm having trouble with the true ending. It keeps freezing during the ending song so I don't get a chance to save. I'd like to get all endings on one save file, so this is kind of disappointing. I'm wondering if this is a bug or if it's something wrong on my side somehow? Any advice would be great, as I really like this game and want every ending.

UPDATE: It turns out every ending but the good ending won't work, at least not the video part. Under movies there's only one file, so if there was supposed to be one for each ending then that's the problem, otherwise I have no clue. If it is the problem then I have no clue how to get the other files.

EDIT: Additional details: The audio still plays for other endings, but the video does not.
It reposted my post? Yeah, if my computer's this buggy and dumb the problem might be on my end.
I absolutely fell in love with the art design ♥
Wonderful choice of music btw. I really enjoyed it ; u ;
Sorry for the late reply- didn't notice these posts O_O

Thanks for trying the game Vanilla, TeKe, Jane and Theory!

@Jane, the video format for RPGMaker is a weird one (.ogv) so I'm not sure if your problems come from that >_o I'll send you the bonus passwords through PM though so that you can see the bonus room content online.
never judge a game from its pink and girly looking graphics...hoo boy i quite enjoyed this one, it's definitely going in my faves~
This game is strange. Although I felt little empathy for mary/mari herself, I still got sucked in. As I played the game, all sorts of emotions came flying to and fro: impatience, anxiety, curiousity, you name it.
During my first play through, I didn't know about the multiple endings, so I passed it off as a 'meh' game with painfully cute (compliment) art and soul wracking music. With this, I was more wondering on how you made the game, because, well, it's a sidescroller and all. And I was all "c'mon mary. Walk faster!"
The next day, I decided to go through it again, and boy was I surprised! I discovered even more of the depth and darkness of the story. It made me wonder how you managed to weave such a terrible fate for a sweet little girl. And I was all "SHIT SHIT SHIT MARY RUN SHIT OH GOD SHIT RUN FASTER!!!"

Truly a game worth remembering. Well done! I'll stick around and look after your next projects ;P

PS: Some of the 'images' shown after dissing boaris look glitchy. I know it was intentional, but at first I thought my computer screen was acting up.
PPS: As is already said here, It's really kind of annoying to have to stand in this exact same spot to interact. Maybe you could tweak that on the next game?
PPPS: May I borrow some soundtracks from the game? I'll be use it for mine. It's non-commercial and I will credit properly :D
If not, then... Well... (/^\)
Thank you CyberThunder and karins_soulkeeper!

For the soundtracks, I permit the use of it in other medias or personal use as long as it's not commercial, in fact, all assets of Dreaming Mary are open for personal usage. You can even get the whole maps of the game here! http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=44142279

Unfortunately, we completely forbid the use of our assets in another game, be in commercial or not. It's fine to use them if you're making an animation, to use in your blog, or other things like that but not in games. I'm sorry ;w;
It's fine, I understand :)

Anyway, good job with everything! I wish you luck on your next projects!
(Yes, please emphasize the 's' there. We need more games like this, and more people like you guys to make them. Keep being awesome!)
Thank you very much! If you want to see more of our games we recently released another one, actually! http://rpgmaker.net/games/6508/

However it's definitely not anything like Dreaming Mary since this one's an actual RPG. Still, you might want to check it out~
