Dreaming Mary is an original adventure game in a sidescrolling format, made using the free RPG Maker VX Ace Lite. It is inspired by the Japanese horror game Ib and the abstract game Yume Nikki, and is influenced by the indie platformer Eversion as well as the TV show Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. Despite these influences, Dreaming Mary is not exactly a horror game. It does contain horror elements, though they might never be encountered by a player who chooses to indulge in the dreams instead of investigating.

The game's average playtime ranges from fifteen to twenty-five minutes to reach one ending, and there are four endings. In the game you are able to interact with items and NPCs. It is important to pay attention to dialogue and to your surroundings in order to proceed. Sound is vital in this game and can help the player move forward as well as provide hints to the situation Mary has found herself in.

This game is not intended for children or those of a nervous disposition and may contain triggering content. Please play with headphones or high audio in a quiet room. There are four endings and bonus content is available after all four have been achieved in one game file. For hints and information, please see the game's homepage at the bottom of the description.

STORY

Mary is a girl who loves to dream. In fact, she loves to dream so much she can spend an entire day dreaming. One day, when she falls asleep, she finds herself in a nostalgic place very different from her other dreams. Everyone there knows her and treats her like an old friend, and they invite her to play with them or help them. When she finishes all of their tasks, she is invited deeper into the dream.

Will you lead her to fall into her dreams? Or will you bring her back to the waking world?

As the player, you have the choice in the final decision of Mary's final dream.

ACE LITE CHALLENGE
Dreaming Mary was originally created and completed in RMVX Ace Lite. It was ported to the full version of Ace afterwards, but still conforms to many of the original restrictions of the Lite software, such as:
*No more than 20 maps
*Only 10 events per map
*No more than 10 common events
*Limit of 100 switches and variables
*No call common event option

The full Ace software was needed for file encryption and font change. Mithran's Text Cache script is used as well as a single line of call script in the game's eventing.

4/19: Updated download link added!
Fixed bugs:
-Premature notification of the 4 endings
-Removal of script which caused ‘sound file not found’

Still active bug(s):
-Bonus mode freeze from painting (please only activate bonus mode before the 'turning point' of the game)

Produced by Accha (story, art, programming, voice)
With support from Trass (music, advice on how to use RMVX)

My friend actually suggested that I should play this, and I am rather fond of these sort of games. I loved it! I was reading some background information on this game on various other websites, and I find the "dark" plot to be hard-hitting, juxtaposed against the initial visual aspects of the game.

I really enjoyed the music and audio, too. :D
OMG. Never expected that I would even come across a game on RMN which uses a song it's words are in Japanese..., although I had often seen the games little related to Japan things in some of the aspects. Truly awesome work, literaly! >_<
I played this game about a month(?) ago and whoa, it was so cool. Just wanted to drop in and tell you you created something both really terrifying and really epic.
Like, it was a nice and calm game on my first play through, but going back through to get the true end was something else!
One of the best indie games I've ever played.
I quite liked the game up until...
I got to getting the seeds. Then I couldn't find the book (of course), even though I went through every map pushing up-Z and down-Z on every single tile, twice in the library. I saw the bad "true" ending. I looked at a walkthrough, but couldn't go behind the cement wall (of course). Then I restarted the game and went up through that point again. And again. (To summarize: I'm a bit stupid. BUT the characters kept saying "find the angel" even after the wall turned to cement and I couldn't find the angel anymore - totally misleading!)

At this point, I definitely wasn't having fun. I tried the cement wall before talking to anyone else, and was finally able to get in (of course). It was only later I realized you have to do that before talking to Boaris. I really didn't understand that hint at all, and I didn't even read it the second time I went through the game (because I had already seen all the dialogue only a few minutes ago).

So I finally got behind the poster, and then I started having fun again. Until I couldn't get the key, even after looking at a walkthrough, because I was standing in front of the door and pushing up-Z instead of standing beside it, facing right, and pushing Z.

Finally I got it right and ended with a bit of fun. The SUPERMARY ending was hilarious too!

Bottom line: everything about this game was great (and the dark world was exceptional!) except for the monotonous re-playing the entire game because I missed a point-of-no-return within the first 5 minutes, and the absurdly precise inputs required to interact with things.
By the way, I have a question (with spoilers):
I get that the maid fell to her death, and the penguin (her mother?) lost her head, but what happened to the fox (her... elder sister?)?

Also it seems her father is symbolized by Boaris, but are the other associations right?
Bunnilda - maid
penguin - mother
Foxanne - elder sister?
Boaris - father
This game was amazing! There was nothing I didn't like about it. The art, music, everything. And made in RPG Maker? Impressive! I'm excited to see more games by you in the future.
mary, ur game is wonderful!! How can u create it?? your imagination is great!!! I love that~
Well, I have thought this game is cute before but now relize the truth: quite scared!
I really enjoyed this game! The music, the themes, the character designs were all very well done. These are the kind of games that keep me going and I would rather support than AAA devs. Great job. I wish it were a little bit longer with more routes, however I do like the intent to make the player explore and question what is happening.

I hope to see more from you. Congrats on your first game.
This game really surprised me! I decided to make a Let's Play on it; I hope I can do better at it next time. I was so bad. xD
Please check out my first episode!
I played your game a long time ago and now I have a game-translating project I'm working on. So if you are interest,I'd like to ask for your permission and cooperation to translate this game to Thai language.

Please reply to me whatever your decision is.

I'll be waiting for you!
Oh my gosh, Ib, Yume Nikki, Eversion, and Madoka Magica? All in one place? This is a must-play. Will report back eventually.
This is so far one of the best works in RMN, this game have everything! A lovely-scary visual and sound unique art, amazing puzzles and, of course, a heavy background story. I really love it! And that final with all the author messages was so great. Congrats and thank you for this master piece!
Hey, I just finished this game with all of the endings as well. I agree that this is a magnificent game with good inspiration. (I would think most game-makers who put in effort in the plot have a nice motivation like yours.)

I personally thought the creepiest part was when the boar started to get all pedo on me. @_@ He was my favorite character before "pleasurable." Mfw.
Surprisingly, this game kept me going for a few hours, despite the content actually being relatively short. That in itself is an accomplishment.
Thanks for all your work! I rate this game 5/5.
I haven't played it yet but you can't say a game is inspired by Madoka Magica and say it a nice game! XD
This game is amazing so far! Can't wait to find out what happens ^-^
Played it for about 20 Minutes, the first ending was.. Uhm.. I was getting sad.. :|
THEN I played again and well, what should I say?
10/10, never gonna sleep again.
I played this twice, and to be honest, I was stuck the first time e-e

Buuuut.

I cheated the second time XD

I was really scared of the boarder (idk how it spells but oh well) and it reminded me of a pedophile... Tbh it was a really good game and quite scary when you get to Boarder.

Having gotten my first 4/5, I must now work hard to obtain... my second 4/5.

I have to admit the one thing that threw me off while playing this game is vocal songs and voices. Call me old fashioned, but coming from a 16-bit childhood, I prefer games that don't try to talk to me D:

Still, I loved the atmosphere, the graphics, the overall gameplay, the music, and enjoyed myself a lot in spite of that voice problem <3
