“Oh, hi. I didn’t manage to see you come in there. Welcome, one and all to Christmas Short Story Time with your ol’ pal Jimmy. I’m here today to not only raise well awareness about the many different deadly pathogens that plague young children everywhere from various common household appliances and products but to also provide such Christmas cheer this time a year. And since my attorney has suggested me otherwise, I thought that reading this book based off one of those vidya games that everyone keeps talking about would probably be for the best benefit of the children.”

“Gather around, one and all, as we dive into the tale about a man, his loving family and recent troubles with other outside authority figures that aren’t really his friends. Y-You see, the story here is based off a one those fancy computer vidya games for something called an “Adventure Game Studio,” which I think is Japanese for toy robot. And the author’s name here is “Billy”… What kind of book is this!?”

“Anyways, let’s just turn to page one and see where this thing goes.”

The Story

“Well that’s not very Christmassy.”

“You see, Alfred Robbins here, our main protagonist of this beloved children’s Christmas holiday classic, has just returned home from a rough day working at the local post office. Apparently, this silly Christmas goose here just plum-puckin’ pudding forgot that tonight was Christmas Eve and all the stores here in Cleveland are all closed for Christmas in order to get ready for Jesus. What a pickle he must find himself in!”

“But don’t you worry your large Christmas stockings, as Alfred Robbins here has planned ahead for such an occasion. You see the man is handy with his hands and often quite quick on his feet when money’s tight and time of the essence is about to arrive. It’s amazing what you can do with just a little superglue here and a big roll of toilet paper to make such a heartwarming gift. Apparently the story’s supposed to get rather dark around this point, so I’m just going to go ahead and say that eventually they manage to find the spirit of Christmas and everything turns out a-okay. Yep. The spirit of Christmas.”

The Gameplay

“This scene may look quite unsettling to some, but, hey, at least he’s spending some time with her.”

“You see, this kind of vidya game here revolves around using a real life mouse to navigate and examine things throughout the hallways and the various rooms of the house. When you find something that you can click on, the cursor turns to this big bright red Santa Claus like color to let you know that something’s gonna happen. It could give Santa cookies or milk, if you play your cards right.”

“There’s also a bunch of items to pick up that you can store in your inventory that you can cycle through on the upper right portion of the screen here. You can even combine several items together in order to make the perfect Christmas for you and your family. Basically, it’s like an adventure without the deadly of swords, guns, and anything else that would significant harm to a poor, defenceless reindeer.”

“And I guess that’s the main problem with this here thing. A lot of the different situations here can be quite tricky to figure out due to some its cryptic nature in both its design and its interface. There were a lot of times when I was reading this that I didn’t know where to go or what to do. I went this way – and that way – and back the same way again and I still couldn’t figure out how to get to the end. Luckily, when I was stuck, I managed to go online and find a guide that helped me on my way. This may be all good for me, but some people around here are going to want to solve it on their own, and cheating not for the best of heart here. Maybe it’s just me and my lack of experience with these sort of things, but it would be much nicer if everything was a bit more streamlined, you see.”

“I even found some odd things that happened while I was reading this book, like the little arrow cursor getting stuck or even finding Alfred Robbins here getting stuck behind some things, like the door. These little oddities made me chuckle a little, but it didn’t effect much of my overall enjoyment of this here book.”

The Soundtrack

“Now who could be calling at this hour, Santa Claus?”

“Now the greatest thing about this here book is that there’s music and stuff playing from it, which you don’t really see a lot in today’s books. The music was faint, but when I could hear it, it definitely set the mood and created this ominous feeling that I was being watched by something or someone. There’s not really a lot of music here, but the tracks are customized designed and I do appreciate that sort of thing. Nothing that sticks out as much as the legendary Bing Crosby, but it works just as well to set the tone.”

“By George, it even has sound effects and a weird voiceover that plays when you talk to someone on the telephone. I couldn’t really understand any of it, but at least this book has some sounds. I mean, it should. I mean, book’s gotta make a sound when you open and close it.”

The Aesthetics

“N-Now, you better not hear your wife say that, Robbins, otherwise it’s that blue couch for you.”

“Perhaps the best thing about this whole experience is the pretty visuals for this here book. I tell you, Alfred Robbins may creep me the f*** out but I really the sprite job on this guy. His walking animations reminds me of one of my old uncles when he was trying to find the cat in the middle of the night. The backgrounds look nice, and they have this sort of retro vibe that’s quite impressive to look it. It’s like trying to be hip but even hipper.”

“I can’t really complain about the look of this here book. Everything looks quite nice and especially detailed. Hell, I’m starting to think that this thing is starting to look even more alive the more I look at it.”

The End Result

“Aw…well that’s just adorable.”

“So what did we learn from this story today, kids? That with a kind heart, a hairclip and a will to perspire against the odds, that anybody can make a depressing Christmas into a much more joyous one. I may have not liked the whole cryptic part of trying to find out what item goes where and what I’m supposed to click on, but I thought everything else turned out a-okay for something like this. Maybe with a little bit more jazz added there and there that this thing can be even better than it is, maybe even putting a bowtie on it might do it too.”

“As for Alfred Robbins and family, well…the look on his son’s face when he woke up from his long winter’s nap to the sight that he saw right in front of him gave him such joy that day. His wife got the inexpensive red dress that she so wanted so much, and Alfred Robbins learned that the spirit of Christmas isn’t about how much you earn and spend on presents but more so the gift of love. And that truly is the greatest gift of all.”

“God bless you, Alfred Robbins. And god bless Santa Claus.”

Yeah, I originally wasn’t gonna put that screenshot even in there (because it's the best part), but, you know, ‘tis the season. :D

Well, billhilly here has got it under “Platformer” on his game page, so I had to go with authenticity here and list under that when, of course, it’s clearly not a platformer.

The author of Pocket Mirror had the same problem when they listed their game as an RPG when it’s clearly not one at all. :/
