Plot Overview

In the world of Linguardia, the nations of Rikalia and Dorent are the reigning powers. Although both leaders have been at peace for centuries, a dark cloud is on the horizon. King Richard, leader of the Rikalian Empire, has recently lost his wife and daughter to a pack of demons. Now, his mind twisted from grief, Richard is on a quest for domination. His plan: to harness the power of the six legendary crystals, which, according to scriptures, will bestow the wielder with unimaginable powers if brought together. With Richard on a path of destruction to collect the crystals, war seems inevitable.

Players take control of Epoch Lander, Captain of Richard's Dragon Knights, an elite force within the Rikalian Empire. However, when Epoch begins questioning the morals behind Richard's actions, he is arrested for treason and sentenced to death. With his head full of unanswered questions, Epoch must decide whether to accept his fate or fight for what he believes to be the greater good: even if it means fighting alone.

Soundtrack Complete!

Jose has just finished the last two songs of the soundtrack, bringing the OST to a grand total of 36 songs. With those final two, the Forever's End soundtrack is now complete! I really have to thank Jose for all the hard work he put into these songs. They all sound fantastic, and I can't wait to release the next episode with them implemented. Great job, bro!

Do know though, there are a few songs that will be included with the game that aren't custom. Not many, but a few, mainly because some of my cutscenes were already built around these songs. However, all of the ones included on this gamepage are the custom ones composed by Jose.

With the soundtrack complete, I thought I'd list out a few of my personal favorites. If you have any favorites, please comment and show Jose some love.

Traveling - Overworld Theme

The Reprieve

Dangerous Wilderness

The Death Knight - Marcellus' Theme

Spiritualization

Journeying Forward

please please don't get payment/stuff involved in this because honestly it makes me feel awkward and unfair that i'm getting paid for helping out with Hetalia, but did the art for free with this. i feel like it's very mean for YDS :( and would prefer the subject not touched on too much.
i started out knowing that i was working for free and i simply don't believe that i should ask for money when i've volunteered to do something in the first place; that's all. :)

this probably doesn't have a bearing on anything but i just thought i'd get it out of the way haha

Either way, all the art is fantastic and is helping to improve the visuals of both projects :)
I can agree on Craze on at least one point: writing.

My creative writing teacher used to say, "Show, don't tell." Show the player the character's personality through the character's actions and use the dialogue to tie those actions together.

For instance: we know that the king wants to collect the crystals. We determine this because he sends the hero off to claim them. Through the actions of the hero, we know how these crystals are retrieved (violence and theft). All we need to know is why he wants the crystals. This is where the dialogue comes in. However, a lengthy conversation and multiple references to the king's dead family are not necessary. Instead, a simple "For you ..." or some line like that could be used while he stands in front of their graves to show that he has a greater cause than pure tyrannical evil.

Also, Marcellus blathers a bit too much. Gloating about being evil is all well and good but he's a busy villain with people to kill and towns to burn.

I'm not here to bash though. I love the battles and I feel properly motivated to clear the dungeons. I also found escaping from the prison interesting too. Learning skills through books is interesting and infuriating (I missed the 2nd volume somewhere or another). The music isn't bad but I didn't find it particularly memorable either. I also found the balance to be good (though I haven't gone past the sewer level).

By the way, your art is amazing boobledeeboo!
Is it possible to fight the Level 2 hidden monster from the Winter Temple later? Or do you have to fight it when you are there with only 2 chars(Epoch and Seti)? It seems to do lots of damage - more than I can heal. I'm leveling now... I want to kill everything.

Umm... wow... I thought everybody loved each other here...? I'm no developer or anything, so I don't have much pull, but bugs aside, I think this game is pretty damn good. Plus, you can never please everyone and trying to do so is pointless and fruitless. The fact that this game is getting as much negative feedback as it is means that is must bring enough positive feedback for it to occur in the first place. If a game was absolute garbage, only a few people would need to find this out before word spread to the point of it no longer being an issue.

Sorry, I normally don't do this kind of stuff, but I was surprised at the post Craze made a little bit ago. It's completely fair and understandable that you don't like it, but most of your arguments seemed completely subjective with very little objectivity. Don't get so angry over something that is meant to be entertainment. If you don't like it, put it down and walk away.

Anyway, like I said before, I'm not a bigshot on here by any means, but I think the game is great so far (finished Lyonell Manor and about to do Lee's bit). And I mean that from almost any aspect (art, gameplay, story, etc.).

Good luck on finishing this up!

P.S.
I is an enigimaneer, so I don't get the finer parts of writing, but I see nothing wrong with it so far (I've seen wordier games that say less).
After reading Craze's rant (Which I pretty much agree with) I feel the need to ask if you've changed the opening stuff at all since the last demo.

If you haven't you should try and do that. It seems to be putting a lot of people off.

EDIT: Now that it's been brought up the art situation does seem strange. I'm echoing what Craze said, yes, but it's strange to only use the art for promotion, even if downsizing it would massacre the quality.

I use the art in-game. Craze just doesn't like it because I had to downgrade the quality; not like I had a choice.

@F-G, Oblic, LWG: Thanks, guys.
No need to be harsh guys. The fact that NicoB has made the game what it is shows hes probably taken alot of advice down the road, and I personally don't have any issues with any of it. Ps: My next set of bugs will be coming today...yes I know, I am a brutal game tester.

@Luthan: Yes the level 2 monster can be killed at that point, I pulled it off. I however couldn't seem to find the second rare monster in the desert (a different area, in case the question comes up later)...so I assume it's level 3. I don't know if you can come back or not, I'm not that far ahead.

That hidden sandstorm monster is brutal. I'm putting it on hold so I don't overlevel
i can't figure out why it is so laggy on my computer, it's almost unplayable, does anyone have any suggestions? i don't have this problem with any other games i've downloaded.
why do the sound effects completely dissappear all the time? it's forcing me to reload everytime :(

also; I have a slew of notes scribbled down, I will probably post them when I've either beaten the demo or ragequitted it

I have the same problem. :x It's the same way on both my desktop and laptop.

Check the ReadMe file. I'm still trying to figure that one out.

Not really sure what this would be. Is it everywhere or just in dungeons?
6) I like the dialogue but you don't. Whatever. Compared to most videogames, it isn't as bad as you describe.

It's bad. Saying it's not bad compared to liquid shit still makes it bad.
The lag is an issue I think most people have had...including me. My trick around it (although it might annoy some people, it does work), is that when it looks like your character isn't moving but it is, due to the major lag, open up your menu and close it, and it will show you where he actually is. Not all the areas are laggy, as once you get past the sewer, and the first world map portion of the game, it gets better. The legend in the desert also lags a bit, but you only have to mess with it a little bit.

Anyways guys, if you find the skill revive...don't use it. I have found quite the bug with it. If you use it on a live character, it instantly kills them, and it doesn't revive dead people. I've already pmed him about it, so it might be fixed soon.

Did you find the second hidden monster now? Is the 'hidden sandstorm monster' the second hidden monster? I only found 1 hidden monster and that Grey Spirit with like 22k hitpoints. That spirit didn't have something about "hidden monster" in the scan description so I assume he will appear as a "Other Enemy" in the monster guide. I will kill it later if it is possible to return later.

I found 2 bugs.
Crash:
I don't remember the error message - when the battle between Epoch and the 2 soldiers in the inn where Marcellus murdered the innkeeper was about to start. I suppose this one of these random crashes mentioned in the readme. A bit annoying(but only a little bit) because I had to go through the dream scene again. Then it worked without a bug.

Winter Temple:
Second bug was with that Level 2 hidden monster in the Winter Temple. It was possible to escape the battle. After escaping no keys worked. Not possible to go to the menu or move around. Had to reload then.
@Luthan: Yeah, that was the other hidden one. He's meant to be more an endgame boss.

I'm sorry about those bugs (especially the revive one). Thanks for the heads-up. I will release a revised version soon.
For the winter temple boss, I beat that level 2 rare monster as well, but it never occured to me to check to see if I could escape, so that was a nice find. As for the random crashes, I had one happen to me too, but theres no real way to track down the cause. Mine was when I was going to use cyrus in battle for the first time, but luckily I was provided with a save 2 seconds before that lol.

Anyways, good game so far. Now I regret not killing the desert monster, since the chapter ended before I could go back to it :(.

Edit: It just now occured to me that I said I beat the same boss twice >.<. I was thinking of the hidden one on high road at the time, which is the other level 2 I beat.
I played this awhile back and while I find NicoB's efforts admirable. I also agree with what Craze and some others have said.

I felt that at it's core the problem with Forever's End is that, at it's best, it seems to be a refreshing, modern take on Final Fantasy 4.

At it's worst it seems to tread all too familiar ground, neither advancing nor challenging what has come before it, while adding useless characters and a battle system I personally couldn't careless for.

The time and the amount of effort NicoB has put into this project clearly shows but I just kind of wish it was spent on something a little more worthwhile.

I wonder while he's heading towards these personal deadlines, if he ever asks himself why he's spending so much time on this project. Is it because he is seeking a personal sense of recognition for his efforts or is it because he has this overwhelming, all encompassing passion for a game that he, himself, has always wanted to play.

If it's the latter, then I can't really judge. if this is actually what he wants in his game, then it's just a matter of opinion and personal preference; I would've kept the battle system very simple and just focused solely on Epoch, Marcellus and King Richard because that's where the strength of his story is, something I personally wished to see more of if it were my game.

Nevertheless though, your audience will always be able to tell whether it's there or not, that love for creating a game that you've always wanted to play.
