File Size? Is It Important?

Hey guys,

So I've been trying to decide lately how exactly I want to implement Jose's custom songs. On the one hand, I can add them as MP3 files, but doing so will greatly increase the size of the file (the custom soundtrack is already over 130 MB large). On the other hand, I can add them as OGG files, which have the same quality and take up half the space. For the previous release, I used MP3 files but also used a program that decreased the file size with a very minor decrease in sound quality. However, I don't want to diminish any of the quality of Jose's songs, so I won't be doing that this time around (at least not for the custom tunes).

There are pros and cons to both file types. MP3s will be the easiest for me to implement, as I can basically go in and just copy them over the original files, meaning I won't have to go in and change any specific events. Also, MP3s will allows people to transfer any of their favorite songs over to iTunes if they want. OGGs are smaller, but implementing them is a bit of a pain. In order to get them to work, I have to add .wav to the end of its file name, so that the file name will say "Songname.ogg.wav" (or just "Songname.ogg). Because this changes the name of a number of songs, I can't just paste it in the game's music folder. I'll have to change every event that references that specific song, which will take some time. Also, adding .wav makes the song pretty much unplayable outside of the game (unless the user changes it back to OGG). It's also a possibility that not everyone will be able to play OGG music files without the correct codecs, meaning I'd have to include them with the game.

I'm thinking when the game is all said it done, with MP3s, it will probably be around 160 MB. With OGG, it'd be about 95 MB. So my question for you guys is:

"How important is file size to you?"

I would rather just include them as MP3s because it's easier for me and for people to play outside the game; but I don't want to do it if the file size discourages people from downloading the game.

I would worry about file size if it would cut it by half or if the game would end up being 200+ MB with MP3s. As it is right now, if your game is large and impressive enough, 160 MB shouldn't be a problem (especially since it's only a 65 MB difference). And this is coming from someone who would like to decrease the size of his game as far as it can go since 67 MB (pre-file purge) still seems unnecessary.
Personally, I think 160mb for a game like Forever's End is fair enough.
Nobody uses 56k internet anymore.

So no, not important to me.
Yeah, 100 and 160 MB are pretty much the same: either you take 5/10 minutes to download it, or you can't download it at all. So no, not really important.
95mb is no diff from 160mb. Come on! We're living in a new age!

That said, please stick to .mp3 format so as to save the hassle.
It takes me 3 hrs to download 100 mb *shrugs* Well either way, it depends on your target audience.

Yes, but would you NOT download this game if you had to wait that long? Probably not, if it's a game you really wanted to play

PS: Double negative... :|
Use Mp3 :]
You could even, you know, have a download with diminished sound quality, a download with full sound quality (therefore much larger) and a download of the OST itself. Also... Upload the Forever's End OST to Youtube! :D
It's always nice to have indie game soundtracks on youtube ~ ♥

I'm actually replying to the people who posted above me that says who doesn't have fast net these days when it varies from country to country <_<

Where in my message says anything about the game in a negative way??

That said mp3 is fine.
Filesize restriction max limit on RMN was bumped from 150mb to 450mb recently, so we can accommodate 160mb now. (of course, large filesizes are still up to the discretion of the submission queue moderator (me) but at least now larger files are physically possible to upload now)

I would just go with .ogg personally, and if somebody wanted to listen to the music you could upload a separate soundtrack archive. Even if people's connections can handle a small file (160megs is small), the smaller the better still.

Could care less about filesize, I have similar situations like yourself. XD

whatever you do with the file size, make sure the hentai gifs are high resolution pngs

If this weren't a really impressive game, I would suggest compressing them. Considering the fan base and attention this game gets, I would say leave them as mp3s. I pay way too much for my internet not to take advantage of the speed, so load it up!

Go as large as you want; I download a few GB worth of anime daily so 160MB is nothing.

Besides, what difference does 100MB make from 160MB besides maybe fitting on a ZIP disk?

as long as the eye catching content is widescreen and subbed

I watch raws, don't need subs.
Makes me no difference, though I tend to prefer better sound quality.
