Entry for the 2014 Indie Game Maker Contest!
If you enjoyed our game you can vote us for People's Choice from July 1 to July 30.

Art has blessed many people with freedom, expression, and innovation. When a world that cherishes art through the use of the magical art, Pictomancy, one could say the art where paints come to life is a unique cultural gift for all to enjoy. If only that apex of cultural renaissance could stay that way like a dream.

Near the village of Appleby, a young and aspiring painter, Corbin, is prodded into the cathedral’s painting to cleanse the vibrant world from cultural extinction by the Pestilence. To this day, nobody knows where the Pestilence had come from, and Corbin is even less sure how he can help restore the infected painting.

Painted Heart is an episodic tale of friendship, humor, and overcoming fears and trials.

Features

Painted Heart is an hour-long sidescrolling RPG which features beautiful painted graphics as well as original music to create a whimsical experience. Its battles use the Trinity Battle System, a never-before-seen system created specifically for this RPG.

Summary
  • Individually painted scenery

  • Animated Characters and Battlers

  • Never-before-seen Trinity Battle System

  • Original music with beautiful vocal tracks

What is the Trinity Battle System?

This system places a new twist on turn-based battles by emphasizing strategy and coordination. The player controls three characters-- two fighters and one supporter. In Attack Mode, the two fighters each have a set of skills they perform at the same time, and each set is assigned to the keys A, S, and D respectively. After performing their dual attack, the fighters switch to Defense Mode where the front line fighter can Defend or where the back line fighter can use a Guard Skill.

Strategy is vital in this battle system as each action has a number of consequences. Heavy skills use up AP (art points), and if too much AP is consumed the fighters will skip a turn. Attacks change the fighters' base elements, affecting their resistance to the enemy onslaught. Players and enemies can switch the front and back row fighters to gain the upper hand. In most cases only the front row fighter takes damage in battle, so placing the fighter with strong elemental resistance in the front can help you plow through the enemy.

Characters

Corbin, otherwise known as Cor, is the protagonist of the game. Slightly pessimistic and very wimpy, Cor manages to bumble through the painting and restore the land with the help of two summoned drawings.

Zophie is an angel dedicated to the Goddess. She takes pride in strength and loyalty, and tends to solve problems with violence.

Though he looks scary, the demon Agiel is a friendly and intelligent companion. He enjoys teasing Cor and Zophie and is the coolheaded counterpart to Zophie's rashness.

Painted Heart now released!

We've tried our best to make a beautiful and light game for you to enjoy-- if you give it a try, I hope you have fun!

If you think our game is pretty cool, please consider supporting us in the contest ;D

Feel free to share this game with friends and family. This game is appropriate for all ages-- no trickery this time!

With any luck there won't be any major bugs, but to ensure that you have a smooth playthrough please don't button mash. The game is 99% evented with a lot of custom button actions, so who knows what madness will happen if you do? (Hint: nothing good).

Anyway, have fun!

It's a shame, really, that I can't vote for you.
For some reason unknown to me, I'm blocked in rmw. Maybe it's my IP address.

Ah well, but I'll still be rooting for all of you! And expect my support in your future projects and contests! Good luck to you all! (^0^)/
I was thinking about doing my next review on this game, but since you plan on working on this more and stuff, is it best if I don't? Shall I wait for the future version?

Ah, this game is already done (... well, except for the fact that the rtp tiles poked through when they shouldn't have)! Feel free to write a review if you so wish-- and thanks!

Well I know it's dooonnee, but didn't you hope to improve it in the future? I probably will review it now, but I do remember you saying there were plans to improve the battle system. Or do you mean you are actually done working on the game and ready to move on to a new project?

Yep, the latter XD

To make improvements to the battle system we'll need to find/hire a scripter. Realistically, I think it'd be months, maybe even years before the battle system is fully operational (taking into account the need to find someone, creation time, and testing time). After all that time it'd be more fun to make a bigger, better game from the beginning rather than double back to this one. Or at least, that's the philosophy I'm going with.

(Also, I'm already working on another project, which technically I was supposed to be doing before IGMC came up).

And I suppose I might not have to say this, but feel free to be as honest and critical as you must in the review! Scary things happen to people who show bias after all =P

You supposed correctly :P. Not to worry, I touch on as many things as I can and then whatever rating I was thinking of before writing the review changes every time. I'll try not to feel bad after you gave me a 4.5 ;D.

Edit: Also, good choice on the moving on actually. I agree, I'll try to remember that for myself in the future as well.
Wow... I just played through the game... It's really amazing! :o
o completed the game sooo aesome i was about to cry at the end i think there will be a next season cause they said next time we sees

I'm a little underwhelmed. It's pretty yes, the story is sweet and all, but I find the one-dimensional characters rather irritating (I realize it's on purpose). Most of the dialogue seems redundant to me (except the very last ones), and I do dislike the super-weak all-time whining hero. The restauration seems not as impressive as it probably should be to me among a couple of other things.
The music is good, though, although it does not form a clear picture for me. Is it supposed to stay as an abstract world which it seems to be or a vibrant one?

Not to mention it's rather slow, all menus (and how I'd love to run by default), battles and yeah.
I find the tutorial throws too much at you right away - I managed to memorize the weaknesses right away, but the other stuff got lost on me. Not to mention that anything else (aside from focus) should be self-explanaroy, so it would be better to comment in-fight or at another point.
It's difficult enough, though, I am forced to use items. But not particularily fun, either. It shouldn't be the focus anyhow, so that's fine.

I'm still wondering why the battle mechanics are fairly complex when the game clearly focuses on atmosphere.
Thanks for playing and giving feedback, Kylaila!

Yeah, you've pointed out a lot of things I'm unhappy with, too. For the story, at least, I was trying hard to keep a lighter atmosphere (with a lot of help from Chaude), but ended up handling it really awkwardly as you can tell :'' D

We did what we could in the month, and while it's not enough to match up to the better games (of which the makers did a really great job!) I'm proud that we got it done, flaws and all.

Well, I am also disappointed that we missed the mark, but that's life-- we'll try harder in the next time. If you ever play another of my games, I hope that one will surpass your expectations! =D
I hope so, too :) It's always difficult to work in such a small timeframe, so you cannot possibly have all projects 100% up to the creators' standard.

Review will be up soon. I'm sure enough more positive ones will come up as well, so I hope to give some more detailed critique. I realize the vast majority thoroughly loved this little beauty.
Yeah, I've been thinking the exact same thing. I thought "better go for the lesser known games", and then the big ones end up with none. They achieve enough exposure nevertheless.
I'd go for Tirawrmisu, but I played the demo already, so I'm kind of fed up with the store^^

I knew you had this one in your sights Kylaila, not sure how just a feeling. I'll be interested to read the review though.

as for Tirawrmisu, that one is being overhauled so I thought I'd leave it until the newer version comes out.
I thought they already updated it to the contest version?

Haha, your intuition works well :) I certainly do not go by my playlist alone, it is more of a helper to remember titles I might forget otherwise. And to have an overview.
It's so odd to hear non-creators talk about one's review, but I'm glad you look forward to it. It will be a little bit long, but I don't think you will mind.

Last I checked Caz said said in the comments that she was gong to patching and fixing and adding extra content, use for the excess money, different ways to gather ingredients etc. So I'll wait for that one.

and I probably shouldn't be discussing one game on another's game page. So no, I don't think I'll have a problem with a length review, after all the game does have a great deal to talk about.
Alright Accha, just handed in my review. You'll be seeing it soon. Hopefully I can fit one more review in this week before next Tuesday. A record-breaking two reviews in one week! You'll find it's pretty honest with how I feel about the design and stuff.
Thanks again for all the feedback, and especially to Kylaila and outcry for the reviews haha XD

Ahh, and I'll just chip in at the last minute that I was also close to reviewing Tirawrmisu but didn't for the same reason nhubi did. =P
