A short murder mystery visual novel about a detective, a yoga course attendant, a grieving wife, an obsessed cleaner, a "bro", and a bitchy friend. To Kill A Black Swan is not your average whodunit, nothing is as it seems to be, it is all about superficiality (and beneath the surface it has an important message to tell.) TKABS was created for the 2014 Indie Game Development Contest and is available for free. The title is inspired by To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, but it is an original story.

Release

Hi!

I'm sorry I didn't announced this game here earlier in a proper manner. So now officially: The game is released and can be downloaded here or on the official website: http://en.marcel-weyers.de/visualnovels/to-kill-a-black-swan/

It is similar to This Is Where I Want To Die in terms of style and themes, but it is longer and you can actually do something in this game apart from reading the story. It's a murder mystery visual novel and you can guess the murderer at the end!

It's even more fun if you know some literature, but that's not required. Everyone who loves novels should read this one, and everyone who doesn't should read it even more!

Well .. I loved "This is Where I Want To Die", and it is indeed very similiar to it regarding style and themes. But it doesn't have the same impact.

And to actually play a game in German .. weird. It's more enjoyable in English, though, which is what you polished more anyways.

Generally, it's okay. There are little hints to guess the murderer, but especially near the end the "sudden revelation" seems way too forced. While it worked well for a well-known topic in "This is Where I Want To Die", it's more complex here and would help nothing to understand it. It would've been better to bring it up earlier/in more detail.
(there are some very odd formulations as well spread in there.. the "what about his enemies" doesn't seem to be in the English version, though. Incredibly awkward.)

Edit: Review will be up soon. A nice try, but it didn't work out.
Thanks for the review. I appreciate you playing the game and giving such an insightful review! I definitely understand why it didn't work for you, and I will use the feedback for my future work.

I choose a detective background because I actually wanted to have a more objective approach, since I did not want to step on any toes with a subjective approach. It's quite a complicated topic, and in hindsight I wished I had more time for this. I agree that the emotional impact did not work out that way. I'll update the game after it has been proofread in English and German.

Thanks again!
I'm glad you could appreciate this rather harsh review!

Yeah, that makes sense. But it doesn't work well together with the sudden revelation. A more objective approach requires more building up and many more pieces of information than that. Quite conflicting with the time restraint and all.

Although for these topics and messages a personal approach works much better, imho. You have much easier access to facts anyhow. But I really like that you try to tackle these topics
