Farming can be Fun? Yes it can! ^_^

I've never been fond of farming simulators. I tried playing Harvest Moon and similar games because they looked like fun and seemed to be open-ended with their design. But those quickly grew boring and within an hour or so I put those games away and still have not played them again.

Enter The Farming One.

I guess this was made for a contest and the judges only had an hour to evaluate the game. Obviously if that is the criteria then it needs to grab your attention quickly and pull you into its world. And I was pleasantly surprised to say that The Farming One did just that.

There's no battles here. No large maps or complicated inventory systems. No slaving over growing crops when you can hire people to do it. So its simple in how you play it. The graphics and music are nice RPG VX fare but the game focuses more on what is fun and keeping the player interested. And to that extent it does an excellent job.

The pacing of the game is perhaps its best feature. You don't have to wander around or repeat a bunch of actions over and over. It moves pretty fast. Even when I lost my data because I forgot to save.. I didn't have to wait long to get back on track and I was back and better than before within about 10 minutes.

Yet for its great pacing, there are still lots of fun things to do that make you want to explore or side-track a bit. You can explore mining in a cave, learn to fish, chop down trees, or surf the internet.. and none of these are tedious. Just fun. You can even get married to the gender of your choice instead of being forced to choose a politically correct path. You can further choose a number of options in the ending of the game from defeating the bandits that ransacked things in the first place to actually joining them. None of the choices are forced on you and you can pretty much do whatever you want.

This is a game that you can play for a couple minutes or a couple hours and have just as much fun. I never thought I would be interested in a farming rpg/sim but this one did everything right. You'll make progress quickly and then after you put it down, you'll want to come back and try something else, or explore something you wanted to see before in more detail. I still enjoy coming back and doing just that.

Even if you are not a fan of sims or these types of games, I would highly suggest you give it a try. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised like I was. Its cute, its fun, its short.. and yet still keeps you coming back for more.

Great job to the designers - you found the right pace and made just the right adjustments to the farming sim formula to make this game a winner!

Thank you a lot for your review! The fact that the contest had to fit in one hour was definitely what helped shape up the mechanics and make sure the game had a fast face, and we are glad we went with that pace.

We are glad you enjoyed our game! Thanks again!
