A review from the perspective of someone who never played a Point and Click game.

Little Briar Rose is a point and click game based on the old fairy tale Sleeping Beauty.
I never played a point and click game before. I've seen others play this style of game but that's about it. So, this was a fresh experience for me and on that note lets delve into gameplay. Most of what you're actions involve talking, gathering items, and using said items which are essentially keys. It doesn't sound like much but the game makes you think on how to use these keys. If you use the wrong ones then you perish and take the role of another adventurer. It's a pretty neat way of punishing failure.

My favorite puzzle was building the house with the gnomes. You are tasked with figuring out what parts to use for this house based on a poorly scribbled blueprint. This more than any other part of the game gave me a sense of being able to effect this beautiful stain glass world.

The puzzle that frustrated me the most was when a fairy asked for something shiny.
I thought to myself: Oh no, I gave the shiny stones to the gnomes so they could impress the mermaids! I was so sure that I had screwed up that I restarted the game.

This time I had the shiny stone and finally gave it to her and she refused to take my shiny stone.

I caved in and peeked at a play through done by StarPrincessHLC. It turns out I had to talk to a mermaid who then informed me that the king has shiny gold scales that I could take.

My frustration could have likely been avoided had the shiny stone been called something else like beautiful stone. That way I wouldn't have been so sure that it was the key since she asked for something shiny.

Also, it would have been nice if the king scales were alluded to earlier.
Now it's worth repeating that I'm new to the whole point and click kind of game. So, it wasn't simply instinct for me to just go and talk to all the mermaids again.
I don't think it would be fair of me to judge to harshly on that. It provided a challenge that I simply was not ready for. Games should have difficult moments and that one was just a little to hard for me.

Moving on to the story, I found it rather charming. I enjoyed solving the problems of the forest denizens. Plus, some of the NPCs were really interesting. The banter between the raven and the gnome was a highlight. At the start of this conversation they trade insults and you assume they don't like each other but by the end of their chat you realize it was all just ribbing. It turns out the two are good friends.

I thought there would be a final challenge in the castle but you simply need to help the people of the forest to win.

The end credits really should have had a new song. It just used the same tune as the rest of the game. That being said the music of the game works well in tandem with the stain glass graphics to give you a unique and mystical experience.

Will I play a point and click game again? Maybe. Little Briar Rose was a pretty interesting game and I think it's worth while experience. Give it a try.
