In an alternate version of the roaring twenties,Sheila Stix is a small time criminal at the lowest possible rung of the largest goblin gang of River City, the Viper Gang. She manages to scrape by with enough money to eat, sleep and most importantly, keep up to date with all the latest fashions. But when an average trade goes horribly wrong, resulting in the death of several of Sheila's gang-mates, its up to her to find the culprit before her boss decides to punish her for her failure with a brand new pair of cement shoes and a free trip to the bottom of the river.

Goblin Noir: Cement Shoes are Highly Unfashionable is a RPG/Visual Novel with a conversational debate-based 'battle system.' Sheila is a low level goblin; it would be suicide for her to attack anyone in a regular fight! But she does have a quick tongue that she can use to talk her way out of danger. Search for clues, gather information, and find the culprit before the night is done.

Nice to see this over here, but if I might make a suggestion a mirror to mega.nz may be a good idea, not everyone can download from them due to their restrictions on certain browsers. RMN has the ability to host on this site and you could also include a rtp and non for those who want a smaller download.

You may also want to include a link in your summary to the IGMC page, so it will be easier for people to give you a vote if they like the game.

THats some good advice!
Ooh, nice to see this here. I found this from Exeunt Omnes; the creator made a post recommending various discourse-based games and this was one of them.

I think this was quite nice, even though it was closer to a puzzle game than an RPG and the mechanics were a bit simple. The setting is utterly fascinating and I'd love to see more of it. It seems like a natural, modern evolution of a typical fantasy setting; urban fantasy in every sense of the term. The writing was light and funny as well. Quite enjoyable, overall. (Is the gun ever useful, by the way? I only used it a few times and I loved how it's always a terrible idea.)

There are a metric ton of typos, though. Dunno if that was due to the contest time crunch, but you should proofread more carefully.

Have you seen The Logomancer by any chance? It's...sort of what this game would be like if it was a full RPG and low fantasy rather than noir, possibly.

I'm glad you liked it so much! The game was made for a game jam, but universe has been in developement for years for a webcomic. It was kind of like cheating, but the storyline was developed from the ground up for the GameJam, and Sheila herself isn't even the main character of the webcomic.

Writing each of the battles is extremely tedious; I have to account for whatever response the person has chosen beforehand. A LOT of stuff was cut for time, including many ways to win each battle.

As for the gun, heheh that was entirely intentional. It always annoyed me that violence in videogames usually is the ONLY solution, when in real life that would be a terrible way to fix your problem.(did you use it on the cop by the way? I have no idea if anyone has actually seen what happens to Sheila when you do that)

Probably will check out the Logomancer. Might be good for inspiration.

That sounds excellent. Do you have a link?

Haha, I was sensible enough to realize that would probably be a bad idea. Now I want to go back and try it, though. :D (I did use it on Benny and was highly amused by the result.)
So, finished it. Great play as expected.

always these madman villains .. but hey. whatever. At least he was visable to us before the reveal.

Review will be up soon.

Can't wait for the review! I psyched you enjoyed the game.

Haha, unfortunately not. I got caught in the creative trap of not wanting to put anything out until what I had was good enough. I wanted to develope the characters, the world, my artwork, etc. But every content producer will tell you that is like running on a treadmill, you might feel like you are doing work, but you are actually going no where.

But BUT, I recently wrote the first according to my standards and have allready begun drawing the pages. So expect something in the next month or so.
Great game!

Make a sequel!
Hahahaha...seriously.

Wow, I just finished Goblin Noir was surprisingly short. I had expected, for some reason or the other, that it was going to be a long-ish game, nearing the 1-hour limit mark, but I finished it in the space of 10 minutes or less. That said, the experience was enjoyable, although not without its flaws. I think I'll write a quick review to express my opinions.

Either way, I wish you the best for this contest.

... ten minutes!?! Dang, the play time for this game is all over the place.

Seriously, several people who played our game said it took them an hour and twenty minutes to finish. Another said forty.

I'm not saying you are lying or anything, you must be playing the game in a different way than other people, or you just read very fast. I guess I won't know until the review, but I am looking forward to it!
I think the fluctuations are due to the battle system. If you're slow to figure out the puzzle you'll be floundering about for a while, and if you want to see every snippet that'll take time too.
Loved the game, I'll be watching any future releases of yours.
