The dark wizard Ganondorf, seeking to conquer Hyrule, vowed to put an end to the Hylian bloodline. Wielding the Triforce of Power, he took it upon himself to end the royal family once and for all. Princess Zelda is already dead, and the king is slain before Link's own eyes. This will be the Last King of Hyrule.

The pieces of the Triforce of Courage have been scattered to prevent Ganondorf from seizing them. Link, drawn by their essence of courage, must reforge it from its shards in order to face Ganondorf.

The kingdom is already lost. The royal bloodline has been ended. Waves of evil wash over Hyrule as Ganondorf's armies try to find the pieces of the Triforce before Link. Ganondorf, fortified in the Dark World beyond anyone's reach, has achieved absolute power. The situation is utterly hopeless.

Yet as he obtains the strength of the Triforce of Courage, Link presses on into this hopless situation regardless.

The Last King of Hyrule is RMN's collaborative Zelda game made in SMBX! This game was a collaborative effort to make a game in the SMBX game engine where Link is the main playable character. The SMBX engine is designed to make Mario games, and this game contains similarities to Mario-style platforming in some ways, playing like a cross between Zelda 2 and Mario 3.

If it turns out you like Yoshi's Archipelago, will you let brickroad know it doesn't suck?

Hey look, it's Zook! Was this a one-time experiment, or were you planning to stream more SMBX games in the future? If so, you might enjoy this game, which was the latest RMN community project in SMBX and also the one with the highest quality requirements so far.

Thanks for the stream, either way!

Edit:
Also, you should submit your videos as Media on this game page. That way, people will be able to find them much more easily. Thanks!

Okay, submitted to media. I hope I did that correctly!

I actually played through the three Super Talking Time Bros. games before this (also on my YouTube), so I need a little bit of an SMBX break for now. But I'm sure I'll get back around to it eventually.

Okay, that's a good concept, except that the rooms were bigger than one screen, so there were areas I couldn't see to remember after the timer ran out.

That's interesting that I spent longer in other places than the last one. In the former ones, a lot of the puzzles were designed to be "looped" if you lost the powerup without being deadly. I guess my personal preference is for that sort of design given the limited checkpoints in SMBX. It makes sense, of course, for the last level to be harder, but it just didn't click with me.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Well, the idea was that you would only have a second or two to see the real version of each room, and then you'd have to remember it. What you're suggesting would have completely changed the type of challenge, turning it into a platforming race instead of a test of your perception and memory. I don't think there's anything wrong with a platforming race, but it's not what we wanted to make the final dungeon of this Zelda game into. Maybe you think we leaned too hard into the Zelda aspect in what, in your opinion should have been more of a Mario game?

I'll also point out that you took longer in the desert, water, and sky palaces than you did in Ganon's Tower. It was a medium-length dungeon. It probably just felt like a million years because you were so frustrated.
I apologise if my frustrations overshadowed my criticism, lol.

I disagree that the invisible paths were well-telegraphed, but it's possible I missed something. I think that kind of level design CAN work with many more P-switches. At least one at the start of every room. In addition, care must me taken to make sure it's reasonable that a player can finish the room or reach another switch by the time one runs out.

I also think, given the limitations of the engine, that such an ambitious final stage could have been divided into two discreet levels rather than having so much time between checkpoints

You really didn't like the invisible walls in the final dungeon, for some reason, and I don't really know why. I think figuring out where they are is a clever obstacle, since all of them are telegraphed one way or another, and also you can see them all if you're fast enough after hitting the shiekah stone. And generally I think searching for hidden stuff is fun as long as you know it's all condensed into one stage, and not spread out over the game like in Ocarina of Time.

I think most of your other criticisms were good but I don't really know what you have against invisible platforms that are both obvious and also temporarily-visible for the first few seconds. Well, I mean, I kind of do. But man that was like 20 minutes of nonstop salt about them, rofl.

Ooh, a Let's Play AND critical review? Count me in!
Okay, done streaming and now uploading to youtube as a lazy Let's Play.
Overall, it's a solid game. But there's for sure lots of places where I got REALLY ... critical. I hope it comes across as constructive and not mean, even when I do get salty. The fact that I managed to finish it with my limited gaming time and attention span is a good sign

The play list will be here

Stumbled across this just today. There are other parts of the series prerecorded, so I'll mention when they show up!

Well there's absolutely nothing special about the pots in that level or the contents of them, they work just like the pots anywhere else. However, this could easily be the first level you've encountered pots in. My guess is they're probably erroring for you everywhere, not just in this level. (To test this, go to Parapa Tunnel, there's a pot right at the beginning.)

There are definitely some compatibility issues with this game. The game engine that Last King of Hyrule uses doesn't always work right with a non-English locale. If you set your Windows language settings to English-US then it might start working.

Also, if you have experience with other SMBX games, be sure you're running the program that we actually put up for you to download, and not trying to play the game in your own version of SMBX that you got from somewhere else.

If that doesn't work, you might be boned, sorry.

Welcome to the magical world of SMBX.
There's an error message, I forgot what it says. Mysteriously enough though, it stopped happening just now...
