The dark wizard Ganondorf, seeking to conquer Hyrule, vowed to put an end to the Hylian bloodline. Wielding the Triforce of Power, he took it upon himself to end the royal family once and for all. Princess Zelda is already dead, and the king is slain before Link's own eyes. This will be the Last King of Hyrule.

The pieces of the Triforce of Courage have been scattered to prevent Ganondorf from seizing them. Link, drawn by their essence of courage, must reforge it from its shards in order to face Ganondorf.

The kingdom is already lost. The royal bloodline has been ended. Waves of evil wash over Hyrule as Ganondorf's armies try to find the pieces of the Triforce before Link. Ganondorf, fortified in the Dark World beyond anyone's reach, has achieved absolute power. The situation is utterly hopeless.

Yet as he obtains the strength of the Triforce of Courage, Link presses on into this hopless situation regardless.

The Last King of Hyrule is RMN's collaborative Zelda game made in SMBX! This game was a collaborative effort to make a game in the SMBX game engine where Link is the main playable character. The SMBX engine is designed to make Mario games, and this game contains similarities to Mario-style platforming in some ways, playing like a cross between Zelda 2 and Mario 3.

As I continue offering up SMBX games, Alex keeps playing 'em. Sadly, this one suffered from some tech issues, but he got through it!

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

The point isn't to make people watch the rest of the videos at Youtube. Just edit your media post and put all your videos in it, instead of submitting each one separately!
Oh f.. didn't know that actually. I though you had to seperatly sent them in.

We have people infracting on that policy anyway. Maybe we should, like, fix that or something.

Since media submissions are worth makerscore (our silly e-peen system), we wanted a way for LPers to get their due for longer series. Thus, new media pages for more video content, and therefore more makerscore.

Oh man. Just last week I was watching Mario Maker, and got struck with the creativity bug. It kept me up all night with a sudden and overwhelming urge to make another Zelda game and try to top what we accomplished with this one.

I got up the next day and spent a couple hours fooling around in this engine... before remembering why this game took us three times as long as we projected to finish.

I'd love to do a Link to the Past style game honestly. Is there an editor for that?

Several!

I found Solarus while trying to convince myself not to use SMBX again. It seems to be pretty much fully functional, and extremely robust, but perhaps difficult to pick up? As far as I can tell, there have only been two games completed in it that weren't made by the people who built the engine. Which isn't a good sign, but I guess two is more than zero.

The Project Zelda Engine is actually a series of RPG Maker XP scripts, so it would be extremely easy to pick up and you could probably even code new features for it if you have any experience with RPG Maker scripting. However, if you don't, it's gonna be bad to the point of being almost nonfunctional in my opinion, due mostly to the fact that it only has tile-based movement. And I suspect fixing that problem would be a LOT of work.

Open Zelda looks like it might just be a Link to the Past level editor. From what I can tell, it's super accurate to how LttP plays, right down to the sword swing physics. But I'm not sure you can design anything new in it? They apparently have no forum, no wiki, no support, and I can't even find a single game made in this engine. It's dangerous to go alone; take something else.

Zelda Classic is really designed to make Zelda 1 style games, and is limited to ugly 8-bit graphics. I'm not sure you can customize your game very much. However, apparently you can create certain types of gameplay features to some extent, and there have been a lot of Link to the Past style games made in it. This is probably the most user-friendly option, in the way that RPG Maker 95 is the most user-friendly version of RPG Maker.

Zelda classic is fully capable of supporting a 16-bit palette, actually. The problem is that converting everything to that palette is an arduous task. Thankfully, it still has a relatively thriving community that posts graphic packs that you can build the game off of.

I generally don't recommend the program for community events, however, because it's definitely something you need to follow a tutorial for to get the best out of. A more pertinent issue is sharing. You can't export maps/levels the way you could with SMBX or RPG Maker, so the only way an event would function around Zelda Classic is that of a chain game, where people share a single project and add to it.

As far as limitations go, the most glaring are bosses, as they require a specific size of graphics and properties to function well, making your options limited. You CAN give a regular enemy a ridiculous amount of HP and special moves to call it a boss, but it'd still be confined by the tile size of a typical enemy sprite and not really that imposing. You could also reskin, but yeah, it's a reskin of the same boss with similar programming.
I want to add that Zelda Classic also has 2.50.2 engine hosted elsewhere. I don't know what the engine does or what it is capable of. I know the current standard right now is the 2.50 or later engines, but right now 2.50.1 & 2.50.2 don't seem to get a lot of use..(and this probably due to the community moving on in more recent times).

Here is the talk right now on 2.50.2 which is the latest build right now that is not hosted on Zelda Classic. There is a lot of additions, and bugfixes:

Well, some players have expressed confusion about the fact that Battle Mode doesn't actually work in this game. So I changed the "BATTLE GAME" option on the main title screen to say "CRASH GAME" instead. I mean, at least now you can't complain when the game crashes. You picked that option yourself.

SOLVING PROBLEMS, GUYS.

YEAH! DEVELOPMENT!

On a more serious note, I think the project Zelda Engine Would be the best choice for another game. That is, if we could Threaten convince Some Poor sap Talented XP Scripter to do our bidding help us out, that way any sucky design aspects would be actual choices, not engine limitations.

I'm the talented RMXP scripter, it's me. And I'm already making a turn-based RPG with Zelda-style puzzles, like Lufia 2 or Wild ARMs, in RMXP using my own set of scripts. The LttP battle system is the part I don't care about!

Uh, any of you guys who want to are free to help me out with that one. Send me a private message. Just be aware that it's been in development for... a while now.

A Youtube LPer who does gameplay videos with a focus on analysis just did a Let's Play of Last King of Hyrule, plus an analysis video and a video review! In case he doesn't post them on rpgmaker.net, I'm linking them here, they're pretty good.

It's a shame that he's not very familiar with SMBX itself, otherwise he would have a appreciation & understanding of the development of this game like we do.

Nah, I definitely prefer reviews and videos from people who have never heard of SMBX. Their play experience feels more legit, they don't take things for granted, they don't exploit obscure engine bugs that they learned about in other games, and they compare the game to other Zelda games instead of other SMBX games.

Ideally a player shouldn't know or care what the game's engine is. What matters to them is the outcome, not the development.
