Back in Business!

Hello everyone!

As you may have noticed, well… I’m not Ratty.

My name is Vis_Mage, and I have been in contact with Ratty for the last few months. Back when Ratty made the decision to cancel Pokemon RMN, he noted that anyone seriously interested in continuing progress on the game was free to. And, after a bit of consideration, I decided I was up for the task!

Ratty has been kind enough to send me a large number of files detailing future plans for the game, along with all the resources in which people have contributed to the game. I hope to continue progress as Ratty had done, although with this in mind, I’m open to suggestions that you may have for the game. I’ve gone through the previous reviews, as well as a few Let's Plays to get an idea of how players are liking the game so far, but feel free to leave feedback and requests in the comments as well!

As for the next estimated beta release, I’m afraid I don’t have a concrete date yet. I’ll have university until mid May, although I’ll have most of the summer off. Ideally, I’d like to shoot for a new demo by June, although this will depend on a lot of factors.

Going forward, I will need to call out for your help. Although I can handle the technical bits and bobs fairly well, I will need some help with spriting. Quite a few Pokemon already have battle sprites, although there are still some gaps in the dex. Additionally, I’d love to populate the overworld with all sorts of Pokemon walking around, but this also requires a few spriters. If you are interesting in helping out, please let me know! I’ll be happy to send you more details. Perhaps we could even implement mega evolution, the sky’s the limit!

Also, not to start any rumors, but I’ve got a secret project in the works regarding Pokemon RMN. Keep an eye out for those sneaky hints!

I hope I’m able to do this community justice, and I can’t wait to hear back from everyone!

I'd say you should keep to the limit to the ground, actually. What's important is completing the game, so that everyone who contributed to this project can get a sense of satisfaction. After all, this game is the product of an event with this goal: Have the denizens of RMN make Pokemon to be put into a Classic Pokemon game.
Mega Evolution would be neat, but altogether unnecessary. We have 151 Pokemon, let's use them.

Personally, I'm looking forward to finishing sorting out the TMs and HMs and egg moves. Since Ratty is no longer working on the project, and I haven't seen Mathewac in awhile, I'd like to take on that job.

The ability to battle RMNers with RMN's pokemon would be ridiculuously cool. (As a hint for what I want your secret project to be :P)

I'm willing to help with spriting although it's hard to say if I'd actually have the ability to do so. Either way, I've been wanting to stretch my spriting abilities for a while and this could be a could way to do it! I'm willing to try~ I'm currently participating in the McBacon Jam however so you'd have to wait a month or so to get any concentrated help from me. Sorry! ;w;

I'm super hyped to see this revived though! ^.^

What Seiromem said. This project is a gargantuan undertaking. Get the fundamentals completed first and then see how many more bells and whistles you're ready to attach.

I agree with Seiromem that you should focus on completing the game rather than adding extra features like Mega Evolution and the like.

Also you may want to revise some of the stats of the Pokémon. I realize people want their own creations to be strong, but when I was looking through the planned Pokédex I saw that most of them evolve into something with over 300 base stats. The early bird you can catch in the game becomes a psychic bird that is as good as your starter! I feel like the stats could be balanced out a bit better.

But even if they aren't, it's very good to see this revived. All the luck in the world to you, Vis!

I guess that for nerfing some of the RMNmons you'll need to have them implemented in the game and see how they behave.

Happy to see this going again. I'll see if this time I actually do a sprite.

Yeah, nerfing some Pokemon's Stats is something I'd recommend. While having Pokemon that are all-around good stat-wise is fine, there are a few too many who are good at everything, we need some who specialize.

Now, obviously stats aren't what make up a Pokemon in terms of balance: their typing and movepool matter a ton as well, and we've got a good variety as well, so I think minor tweaks are all we really need.

Hey, I didn't think this project was going to come back to life any time soon. Thanks for taking it over, Vis_Mage!

As others have said, let's focus on getting the core game done, since that's already a metric crapton of work. It's fun to fantasize about all the cool extras that could be added, but it would be tragic to see this project fall victim to feature creep.

I can't help with spriting, but depending on how quickly you guys work, I may be able to help out with some playtesting, proofreading and providing bug reports and feedback in the future. If that's something you're interested in, I'll be happy to help.

Hm I'd like to complete the sprites since there's only like 22 left, but I can't make any promises until summer x) also how many overworld sprites were you thinking?

I don't suppose we ever got that done did we? Oh well, I can certainly help finish that stuff up. This semester of school is winding down for me so I'll have some time - though I'm still busy with work and such so I probably can't devote as much time as I used to.

EDIT - I would imagine communicating through something like Slack would help centralize the remaining workflow. Should/could we set up a PkmnRMN channel in the RMN Slack?
