A wild developer (finally) appears!

Hey, long time no see! :)

So, college and general adult life has proven to be about as troublesome to progress as you'd expect. A lot has happened this past year, stuff that I won't get into here, but I wanted to pop in to address something.

Progress might be going slow, but it is happening. During the time since I've taken over development, I've become far too emotionally (and financially) invested in Pokemon RMN to ever think of stepping away. I just wanted to re-ensure anyone who keeps an eye on the project that progress is still being made, and I have no intention of that changing.

With all that said, there are a few things I'm hoping to gather feedback on regarding the future of the project...

1. In lieu of some recent events, I'm starting to think it may be a good idea to start distancing the project form the Pokemon brand. By this, I mostly just mean changing assets (and possibly name, down the line) that directly come from Pokemon. This does open the doors to some interesting new environments in which the game could take place. I've toyed around with the idea of a Pokemon game set in a medieval-fantasy setting before, could be interesting. Eitherway, this would mostly just be a cosmetic change, and wouldn't affect gameplay.

2. Probably the more pressing of the two. I'd like to gauge what the opinion is on making changes to some of the Pokemon themselves. Since I've started developing, I've had a dozen or so people critique the game for me. I had them take notes while playing through the game thus far, and for those who wanted to (a bit over half of them), I set them loose on the wiki to give their thoughts on each Pokemon. It was really interesting (and fun :) ) seeing how they responded to each Pokemon's design and stats. What I did notice, though, is that there was certain things would be brought up by nearly all of them. Here's my dilemma, from a developer's sense, I feel I should address these points that were regularly brought up, but on the other hand, I'm a bit apprehensive to make changes, given the history of the project.

But with all that out of the way, I'm hoping to finally start being more active around here, like I had wanted to all this time. Hope things are going well for everyone. :)

For Chi-Yim, such a change would alter its concept; it being able to use its extreme control over its power to always hit with low-accuracy moves like Focus Blast or Thunder, and is a neat way to make a Special Attacking fighting type a thing.
Yeaaah that was kind of the point of it, not to mention it would distinguish itself from Medicham a little. The idea of no guard on her was to take an aspect of Wing Chung Kung Fu in which fighters would practice blindfolded, having to sort of feel out the essence of their opponent (which is why their dex states that they are blind/have poor eyesight). I'm mostly fine with what you decide on, though.

Crabammer - Proposed name change to Crushtomp, to keep the name from being one letter off from its (likely) signature move
Alternatively, I propose, Crustomp (Crustacean/Stomp) :P

Otherwise, I mostly agree with what's already been brought up. Also Plugla is a great concept and Pokemon has never been divorced from goofy concepts.
999 base Speed for Shredax please.

I think that most changes I don't really mind. It's all about names and... names. I don't see the idea behind these, neither see why the recommended names.

The moves... I would be happy to think about some kawaii move for my Ellefan, would feel like revisiting an old friend. However I don't know, I'm skeptic about adding so much stuff. This project should move towards completion instead of prolonging itself.

Maybe keeping new moves simple, reusing old effects but with a twist or something. That limits what you can do for new moves and complicates (maybe) keeping moves interesting and unique. But should be less hazzle to implement.

IDK.

Alternatively, change Crabhammer to Crabam.

CRABAMMER USED CRABAM.

Sad to see there's no feedback on mine.
In regards to Shredax's stats, he currently is the second fastest Pokemon on the roster, behind only Funkound by 10 points. I always thought his movepool seemed more geared towards being a special attacker, since most sound-based moves are special, but however he attacks I think his speed is fine the way it is, since Electric-types tend to be the fastest Pokemon anyway.

Maybe if we wanted him to be tanky and fast, we give him an ability like Static (or a special-based version of that ability?) and a support movepool with paralysis and flinch? It's been a while since I've looked at the full roster but IIRC we don't have a Pokemon that fills that niche.

About the main post...

1. I'm all for eschewing the Pokemon name in favor of our own brand of RPG, but I think a simple rename of the game and mechanics is not going to be enough to avoid a C&D from Nintendo if we were going to get one before. If we go down this route we should discuss how much of the core game we want to change in order to make it something that's truly ours.

2. I think that wiki's a little out of date isn't it? I know like half of the updated movepools aren't on there yet. In any case, I'd definitely be interested in seeing a more comprehensive report of feedback so far. If anything needs to be changed about one of my Pokemon feel free to let me know.

Of course, any rips with the tilesets and UI would have to be replaced, but if you are referring to gameplay, that's not going to get a C&D. Nintendo takes down projects for using their assets and properties, but if you could do that for gameplay... I'm pretty sure Natsume would be up Chucklefish's neck for Stardew Valley.

Or Square Enix could raid this entire site for being a host for a bunch of FF and DQ knockoffs...
Looking back, I probably sounded more doom and gloom in the original post than I really intended to. Feedback as overall very positive, with several people taking quite a bit of interest in seeing the game though. I'll have to dig up all my old notes, but if anyone has a specific 'mon they want to hear everyone's feedback on, just let me know.

Stuff like items/graphics/UI/etc taken directly from Pokemon will definitely have to be changed, but I'm pretty sure we're safe gameplay-wise. With that said, I am open to making some changes to the gameplay structure. An idea I've mulled over in the past involved the player joining an adventure guild. Instead of typical gym battles, you would go on quests, each with their own smaller story to tell within the grander scheme of things, with your goal being to ascend the ranks of the guild, and enter a big tournament at the end. Food for thought.

Likewise, with the shift to a more fantasy-esque world, it likely won't take place in the "World of Pokemon" anymore. So far, I've kinda been adopting it into a fantasy world I've been constructing over the past 6 or so years. This shouldn't drastically affect gameplay, but does mean that some familiar faces could make a appearance in future adventures. *wink*

As for the wiki, I really ought to make a few updates to it. A lot of what's there is still fairly accurate, mostly just additions to be made.

As a side note, even though I have the bad habit of not posting all too often, I do check in pretty often. If anyone ever has something they'd like to know, just shoot me a message.

Do you have all the files for the wiki and the ftp etc? If not hopefully I can find them.

Some SOLID ideas for this post. I think this will really make this project more unique.
