A "short story in game form" taking place in a far off country in the world of "Illusions of Loyalty"

Two men, once students of the same sword-master, meet on a beach. One, a fugitive, a murderer, fleeing for his life. The other, a mercenary, seeking to bring the other to justice. A duel is inevitable. Only one will walk away alive...

---
Delusions of Duty is a very short game, containing a handful of story scenes, and one single boss battle.

The battle uses a "skill unlock system" where using a skill will lock a skill to prevent it from being used, but will unlock one or two other skills for use. To win, you will need to pick your moves intelligently, as well as make sure you set yourself up well for later turns.

Both you and your opponent have the same skills and combat mechanics, so it's up to you to master them on the spot and turn them against your opponent to turn a losing fight around. The enemy will shift stances (between Aggressive, Focused, Wary and Anxious) in response to the flow of battle, as well as the status effects inflicted on both combatants, changing the his priorities as he does so.

If you want to skip the story, there is an option for that, as well as an option to see only the story scenes, once you have successfully defeated the enemy.

Delusions of Duty was my contest entry for the "Fundamental RPGology" contest, where we were expected to create a battle system using only the absolute fundamental RPG concepts the judges prescribed (The give-and-take of damage, a skill-unlock type system, and minimal randomness)

Oh hey, so I see your entry is up, Aegix_Drakan. Do you want me to testplay it?
It's not "up" up. XD

I still need to upload it.

But sure, if you wanna play it once it's up, sure, go ahead. :P

All right, I'm downloading it now. I'll give you some feedback when I've played it.

Edit: And done.
By the way, if you enjoyed the story for this, you might enjoy the other game I've made (Illusions of Loyalty).
Cool, I'll give it a play as soon as possible!

WAIT!

I'm reuploading it.

I...Kinda left developer info in it by accident. I'll let you know when its safe to download. x_x
Ok, NOW you can download it. It's fixed.
I really like the combat in this; I could see this being a really interesting way to develop a full rpg battle system. Awesome entry!

I meant to post my thoughts a couple days ago but totally forgot, sorry! Luckily, I took down a decent set of notes I can summarise from (DISCLAIMER: Please take everything I write with a pinch of salt. I am not the God of RPG Maker, myself):

- First of all, by having both the enemy and the player have the same skills and overall combat mechanics, I really have to hand it to you in terms of the technical ability required to make this battle system. Really good work!

- Locking/unlocking of skills is an idea I was toying around with in the early stages of this competition myself, and I'm glad to see it recognised physically! I would have liked an easy method of determining which skills led to which - maybe a graph of some sort would be useful? - , but I figured it out in the end.

- The 'Sense' ability helps in determining what the enemy is likely to do, but only to a certain extent. I liked that, honestly, because it helped keep me on my toes.

- I felt that both the enemy and the player had too much HP, and there were too many skills to choose from that did too many different things. As a single battle to demonstrate the battle system, I can understand it, but overall lowering HP and the number of skills would help to streamline gameplay - there were a few skills that I didn't feel the need to use at all (I can't really remember those right now, unfortunately), and towards the end I just got a bit bored, to be honest, because the battle felt too much like a back-and-forth with no end in sight.

- Right now, I see potential for this system in the form of special battles (such as the Plunge in The Way) as opposed to ordinary encounters...if you worked on the things above, though, it might have wider applicability.

Overall, a really interesting entry I'm glad to have given a go. Good luck Aegix!

Oh, and I ended up skipping the story bits - hope you don't mind.
Thanks for the kind words. I don't really have plans to make a full game with this combat engine, though. I have enough on my plate already. ;) But yes, if I was making a full game, the standard enemy HP would be WAAAAY lower.

I don't mind. Although you DO know that you can save after it's done and get only the story, if you want...right? :P

Fair enough! It was an interesting excursion that I wouldn't mind seeing expanded with a few revisions, though. ;p

I guess I could do that, but I didn't want my mind to be influenced by storytelling in a contest strictly about gameplay, if that makes sense. D:

Oh, you're one of the judges? I didn't realize!

The story was very short :)

Yup, very much a short story in game form, I'm sorry if you wanted more. XD

I have other games that have more stories in this game's tone/style that are more meaty, if that interests you. ;)
