The world is at war.

First the town guards were recruited and now conscription is being enforced.
The notorious bandit group ‘the Mad Dogs’ have taken this opportunity to terrorise the now defenceless towns.

Ralph, a washed up former detective is living in the desert and couldn’t care less about these world altering events.
That is, until they come to his doorstep.

Facing the threat of being conscripted into the army Ralph flees his home with plans on infiltrating the Capital City. Being the place where the countries ‘betters’ live, citizens there are exempt from being drafted into the army.

This will not be an easy task however; it’s not just a place one can walk into, Ralph will need the proper documentation.
Or a very good copy.

On Ralph’s journey you will also be privy to a glimpse into the lives of two other (far less cowardly) characters.

David is a mysterious man with a deep rooted grudge against the leader of the Mad Dogs. He will do everything in his power to track him down.

Thomas is a high ranking soldier who is hiding his past from his fellow troops. He believes that his Commanders word is above all else and cannot stand the sight of an undisciplined soldier.

Finally finishing the series off

Hot damn can't believe it's been six years since I started this project.

After Chapter 4 I started work on Chapter 5 (was gonna go all George Lucas and call it Chapter 7 but decided against it...) which was a prequel following the Black Knight, remember it was heavily influenced by Phantom Pain since I'd played that around then and think I actually made quite a bit of it, even had a fair bit of gameplay compared to the other Chapters, I remember some dodging fireballs, basic stealth mechanics (really pushing whole Phantom Pain thing) and even a sort of whack a mole boss fight. Kinda got burned out and took a break to work on something else, that soemthing else never materialised into anything and when I finally felt like going back to the Learson project had soured in my mind. Didn't like the story, gone off the whole supernatural angle.

So basically I did nothing for 4 years, well that's not entirely true, got a new job, got in shape, lost my hair but real life stuff doesn't matter.

Anyway finally wanted to get back to it to work on my new project, a project which I cared deeply for, so much that I wanted it to be all by me, custom graphics, music all that. Problem is I'd never done that before, so I couldn't start work on my dream project without practicing on something first, hence the idea to finally finish the Learson series. Not just finish it, remake it. I figured I would condense the story, cut out all the crap, make it short and sweet and simple and smash it out in a year or so. This sounds bad but since I didn't really care about it anymore I figured it would be easier finishing it off and saying 'yep, that'll do', but as I'm sure most of you know feature creep took ahold of me, small tiny maps ended up becoming multiple maps, a lot of what I cut out of the story creeped back in, (saying that most of the crap from Chapter 4 has been cut, not sure what the hell I was thinking back then. Also most of Chapter 1 and 3 if I really think about it.) So yeah I became attached to it and now it's taking longer than I expected. Still I feel like I've restrained myself somewhat this time, I'm actually able to cut scenes and other stuff that don't really add anything. Feel like the story is a lot more cohesive this time around but I guess we'll see.

Main difference now is there's going to be 5 different endings, largely because I couldn't decide on which one I liked and partly because I needed a reason for all the dialogue options in the game.

Anyway, think this new version will be a lot better, more of a visual novel than an RPG, no battles, no puzzles, those always were kind jammed in as an afterthought in previous games. Replaying them for the first time in a while it really was quite glaring. Why the hell were they fighting rats in the desert?

Can't get at the bad guys :)

Hurt my leg, talked with the NPC, went to the doctor?, had my leg fixed.
Saved, then sent up the vine. I can get over to my left and see the bad guys but there ain't no more vines to up to their location.

Am I doing anything wrong ?
How do I go forward ?
You can jump across the gap.

Now that I think about it I probably should have had something to indicate that since after the very first map jumping becomes rare.

If I remember correctly you jump across.
If you can't jump there, move north one step.
Also, DON'T try to drink the water :)

Well, this games extremely long which is un expected think ive been on it for 4-5 hours now and theres not even grinding involved,if nothing else for play time this is a great game.
but ill save the more detailed thoughts for w/e i finish it :3
tho some moments, really upset me tho.
over all its a good experience so far.

Edit
wont do a playthru of this, just takes way to long :3
I found a glitch.. if you go on the opposite side of the well as Vance, the game freezes when you pull the rope.

Aww, bugger.

Thanks for telling me. I'll work on fixing that ASAP.
Well...ASAP by my standards.
Exploit found: when you rescue the family, you can get infinite gold.

Buy antidotes for 60, sell back for 200. Works for any of the items in his shop but this is the most profitable.

Be careful of giving discount prices for the same item. Make a duplicate item that sells for less but has same effect maybe.

Also, what do I do when I'm at the Order of Raphael part? I can't go down with the path.
If that's what I think it is, it isn't actually a path.
I just found the gap aesthetically pleasing and when I removed it I found that
it just looked wrong to my mind.

If you haven't found the locked gate yet that's to the right of where you first saw the one eyed Raphael guy.
And if you have you can break the artefact ball thing in the Order of Raphael building.

-was quite interesting going thru th start if the game with characters who actually comment on the situation!

-:O why!? why did you not have that power with the redhead when u fought with her!?
^also why did she have the same skills as the captain?

-seriously bringing potential rape in the game was not needed...
anyone with common sense would of already imaged it would happen...
^yeah this scene was sickening should remove it...

Plot- i really did not care for the plot of the game it just shows the darkness of humanity
which i dont play games to be reminded of.

Characters
-outside of David i don't think i liked any character in this entire world including the npcs

gameplay-battles were decent, you did not have to grind and the balance for the game was fair
took me about 7 hours to finish the game

Final thoughts
Id recommend this mostly to players who want a considerably long experience.
outside of like...1 scene near the end plot wise i overall enjoyed this.
the maker certainty put a lot of time and effort into this so
you should really try this out.
if i was to give a star rating...
since i liked about half of the game as a whole 3/5 stars
Amazing story and characters! Can't wait to play the next chapter.

Glad you enjoyed it.

While I plan on making the next chapter smaller and more plot-progression focused
it's still gonna be a while off yet.
You did a great job with this, ralphthefifth. Really good game!

Thanks.

Your comments were really helpful.
The game is great so far. i like how the monsters dont keep respawning. :)
Just finished playing the game, and must say that I really liked it. I loved how the storylines of the different main characters intertwined, and especially liked playing as Ralph and David. The history of the world is complex (perhaps too complex), though I like the fact that there are (probably) many mysteries yet to be revealed because of this. I only wish the game would have been a bit more interactive, because you only get to make a choice of your own once (when picking sides between the bandits and Raphael's followers after getting your hands on the sword). Still, a nicely made game, and I'm looking forward to the next part!

It's funny you should mention that since originally there were a few more choices you could make in the game.
For example, you were able to lie or tell the truth to the commander when he asked you whether or not you had seen his men. If you told him the truth you would face the two soldiers as the final boss instead of him.
This was cut due to a combination of laziness and feeling like one choice was better implemented than the other.

A lot of parts were also originally optional. The whole kid in the well and wolf quest was going to be optional and to be honest it probably should have been. I just got really sad when I thought someone might not do something that I spent a lot of effort (a lot of effort by my standards) making.

The fortune teller thing was also originally optional and once I decided to make it mandatory I developed it into one of my favourite bits of the game.
This type of thing happened quite a lot actually, originally Ralph didn't exist and David was the main character. I can't quite remember how that ended up changing so radically. I think it was something to do with me really liking the look of Ralph's sprite from the back, which amazed me since I don't really like the look of the sprites I used (Although I still prefer them to the XP and Chibi style ones.)
I'm liking this so far, but one thing I'd like to mention, and I don't know if it's intentional. Do you mean for there to be no items to cure poison? All the antidotes you can buy are for paralysis and not poison. So you have to go all the way back to a save point to get the poison cured if you want to have it cured.

The other main question is whether you intended for the first merchant you meet as Ralph to sell you potions that give you 500 HP, versus all the other merchants selling potions that give you 100.
