Synopsis

Stricken is a short adventure horror game set in a seemingly abandoned hospital, beginning with the protagonist coming out from a deep sleep - your memories (or at least most of them) completely wiped. Soon after your exploration of your dark surroundings, you find that sinister happenings have occurred throughout the structure - evident throughout splatters of blood, left behind diary entries and mangled corpses. However, you soon discover that the causes of these happening is strongly linked to you and that escape from this nightmare is near impossible.

Developer's Notes:

Stricken is my first properly developed game (most of my others have been unfortunately abandoned) and my first go at a horror game. It's still currently in the process of being developed, with the alpha gameplay already released (which you can check out below). Feedback on the game or the media shown would be much appreciated.

Features:
Some may not be already implemented.

-Contains the ability of interact with nearly every object in the game, giving insight into your surroundings and the unorthodox happening in this eerie hospital.
-A book system which allows you to read diary entries, hospital documents and other things which add to the story of Stricken.
-A variety of music and sound effects which add to the spooky atmosphere.
-Unique and simplistic in-game menu.

Alpha Build:

The Alpha Gameplay's purpose is for early feedback and suggestions which can further help with the development of the game. Feedback ranging from grammatical errors to flaws in the mapping would be much appreciated.

-Dropbox (RTP Included)
-File Dropper (RTP Included)

-File Dropper (RTP not Included)

Please keep in mind that this is not a demo and solely for feedback purposes.

Looking For Game Testers!

Looking for Game Testers!

Stricken is nearing it's release, but to ensure the final product is the best it can be, I'm looking for a few people that would be willing to test Stricken! If you'd like to be a tester for Stricken and supply feedback, feel free to reply to this topic or send me a PM. All testers will receive a copy of the game's download link which they'd be required to play through, listing any bugs, improvements or suggestions (via PM).

Thanks!

Ok so abandoned not abdondoned, unknown not unkown and is the hospital sentient? The way you've written this it's the hospital that is actively imprisoning you rather than the building in which you are being held captive.

If it is sentient that would be cool.

Thanks for pointing out those spelling mistakes. #>.<

Also, what do you mean by the hospital being sentient?

I mean that the way you have written your intro the hospital is keeping the protagonist captive. If you mean that your protagonist is kept captive inside the hospital you should write that, what you have written is 'hospital which holds you captive,' which means it is the Hospital that is sentient and imprisoning you rather than being a building in which you are held captive by someone else.

In other words you should write;
'The hospital in which you are held captive.'
if you mean that someone is holding you captive in a hospital.
Can you customise the main protagonist, choose the gender in this game or at least give them a name?

I'm afraid not. The protagonist has no name (Void is a placeholder) and the current gender and appearance of the character is relevant to the story.

there is some things that you can walk on, that I am imagine that you should rather walk behind it? and in the same room as the picture to the left you can walk on the table.
I know it´s not finished now, but so far it´s good :)

oh and by the way I got an error, something about a movie? I can´t remember where it was though :(

Heya Bonne, thanks for trying out Stricken!

With the passability errors, I'm pretty sure they've all been fixed now (the map you took a screenshot of, I've actually removed due to it not having any kind of necessity in the game) and as for the movie, that was an event I was meant to remove before releasing the ALPHA.

For the meantime, if I remember correctly, the event containing the missing movie was kinda between the two shelves in the labratory. For now, I would think the event can be bypassed (making sure you don't press enter when near the shelves, but I'll try uploading an updated version of the ALPHA with fixes to problems such as these.

Wow this game is dark, and no I don't mean in tone I mean in the actual visibility. I know it's meant to be abandoned but it's a little difficult to find your way around the floors, especially at the beginning with such low light. You may want to brighten it just a little to make it easier on the player. Also that diary 2nd & 3rd pages really are superfluous and given the gritty feel I don't think the cartoonish humour really suits the rest of the game, just leave them as blank pages if you don't have something of import to put on them.

The music is good, foreboding and haunting and really does help sell the idea this place is not somewhere you want to be. I really like the little swinging light fittings, there is no apparent breeze but they keep moving, it's unsettling.

You may want to look at your use of language, there aren't any spelling errors that I noticed but the usage is clunky. for example "A tattered chair which looks like it was used to look after the patient which previously made residence in this room." You can replace the last section with previous patient and used to look after is incorrect syntax, I think what you want to say is something more like "A tattered chair which looks like it was used by a previous patient."

Oops, wait just caught one it's sinister, not sinsister.

Also, you may want to think of better places to hide the various keys you need to move through the floors, in sinks and crevices in walls seems a little odd. There are plenty of desks and cupboards around which make more sense to hold keys rather than holes in the walls. Though of course if there is an in-game reason for that, feel free to ignore that bit of feedback.

I did enjoy this with what has been released so far, I'll look forward to the next build.

Thank you very much for the feedback.

With the visibility issue, I've went around to every map and upped the gamma quite a bit. As for the diary pages, the last two were meant to be removed before the release of the ALPHA, they were for testing purposes within the script. The other points you stated are all things I'll definitely work on.

Thanks once again!
The download link that doesn't include the rtp isn't working. You might want to check that out.

At least as far as the current build is concerned, this is straight-up false advertising. Far too few objects in the current alpha release have descriptions or are meaningfully interactable in any way for this text to be true. Also, the quoted text has some grammatical issues.

The problem with save anywhere is that while some gamers are compulsive savers, others aren't. When you see a save point, it reminds you to save. In games without save points, there are no reminders. Considering that I made some progress from the beginning, forgot to save, and then died a sudden and rather cheap death and had to go all the way back to the beginning and replay, you might want to consider building an autosave function into the game rather than save anywhere.

Edit: I finished the game. I am going to post an (unrated) review with some feedback on the alpha.

Edit2: Okay, my review is now pending here.

I have to disagree with you in that.
Sometimes I am the compulsive saver and sometimes I am the "go as far as I can forgetting to save" but in horror games I consider the option of saving whenever you want better, since it takes off the player sense of being able to predict when something bad will happen (unless it is a game like The witch's house where everything is there to kill you).
