You've been selected for this rescue mission!

Ok, another mission!
Huh, did I say "another"? Yes, because At Last Alone: Rescue at Moranthia, like one of the other games I recently reviewed, is not a long epic story, but a tale of some special soldiers (Shatter Team Alpha) and their mission. In this case it's a rescue mission, they have to enter a castle, fight the enemy Moranthian soldiers and save the Laurentide noblemen hostages.

Simple but not easy at all. This time the soldiers protagonists are Cal, the captain, Samarah the archer, Garrard the barbarian (or berserker if you prefer) and Georgie the.. . well she's supposed to be a werewolf but to me she looked like an ordinary wolf. Ok, a trained one, anyway our four specialist have a plethora of skills, yeah really a lot, divided into 2/3 lists, from attacks to healing skills (Cal and Georgie) to buffs and debuffs. Yeah, there is no shortage of abilities but I guess that you won't use many of them for a simple reason: the 90& of encounters see our team fighting a single opponent, so no matter what, 4 vs 1 means that they often dominate the battlefield (ok, except for the final boss, but that's another story, obviously!).

Heavy hitters in quantity means that we are approaching the end of the game!

Ok, so how does this game work? It's basically a "dungeon delving"... well no ok a "castle delving", the opposite since instead that going underground here you instead you try to go up! Clearly there are opponents, but not random encounters (and that's a good thing): every enemy is visible and will pursue our team to engage them (no matter that they are single guards). Anyway there are also some standing guards that stand still blocking the passages, and in this case they are often groups of two or even three. There is a good variety of enemies, all humans, from assassins to clerics, warrior maidens, guards, soldiers and knights!

An interesting mechanic added to the classical rpgmaker combat is the used of timed attacks and defenses (using keyboard keys A and D respectively) that will increase the damage inflicted and reduce the damage received. I admit that I was pretty good at timing my attacks and pretty bad when I had to defend, but it seems it was not a problem since I finished the game pretty easily.

You do not need to grind, but it's suggested to explore the castle since loot can only be found in chests (if I am correct you can get potions from defeating clerics, but they are not many!). Yes, there is no shop and you start with no potions, but you can find some, not that you need them due to the healing skills of the party members... but the phoenix down are really useful since I don't think there are other ways to revive a character, and some enemies have powerful attacks!

To finish the game you have to complete a sort of secondary quest in order to get a particular item needed to reach the final area. Aside from the characters in the introduction, that's the only png that is not an opponent, for the rest there is a lot of party banter, but do not expect much else, it's a short mission that took me about 30 minutes to complete.

The game uses mostly Rtp but not badly, mapping is ok, I think that some areas could have been a bit more furnished and the carpets are sometimes positioned in a weird way. But uhm ok, it's not bad, just ok and from what I've read it was the first game of the developer, so I don't mind too much. All happens inside a castle, that's all!

Concerning the story, I liked that even if it finishes a bit abruptly with a couple of twists including a post credits scene. I liked this, but still I'd have preferred a longer and more complete ending, this almost sounda like a "to be continued". Well, almost!

Cal attacks! A perfect hit! The warrior maiden dies!!!

Final Verdict
At Last Alone: Rescue at Moranthia is an ok game: really classic but not in a bad way, you will have fun for 40 minutes, anyway this is nothing new or really exciting, but it's well done, no bugs, no typos, and no errors! Clearly there could have been some improvements for example on the maps (there are really few interactions with items/forniture, for example with the maps in the bedroom, but that's all!) and on the story (that as you can guess except for the beginning of the game and the end it's not really important or discussed). What i liked is combat (really fast and easy... maybe too easy!) even if it can be boring after a while but ok, and I also liked a lot the ending twists!
A competently made classic short fantasy adventure!

Wow - thanks for the review! It's been a while since I thought about this game. Yes, it was my first one and I do think my mapping has gotten slightly better. If you're interested in the continuation of the story, check out the other games in the same series! :D
