The Secrets of Kankara is a 2d, action-adventure game, featuring an Action Battle system (like zelda's), an open explorable world, and a full time and weather system. As Elunir, the player must journey throughout Kankara in order to gather an ancient power to stop Makiel, an evil court mage who wants to see the world placed in darkness.

As you journey through Kankara, you'll find secret entrances to ancient sites that hold gear and equipment that will help Elunir become stronger, as well as a number of enemies, and those who might just help you along the way.

Demo:
The demo is hosted on mediafire by the way. If anyone has a problem using mediafire, just let me know and I'll change it so it's hosted here if I can.
NOTE: If you encounter any bugs or problems in game and would like to help me find them, just press the "S" key (or LB/L1 on controller) and write down the number, this is a map id number that I can use to find the problem to help fix it.
When you come across any problems, just type up a message with the map number included like so:

"Name of Problem"
Map: (number in message box)
What you did when the bug occurred, if it can be repeated, and where you were in the map.

IMPORTANT NOTE
I realize that some are downloading the project strictly for the audio, you have to check the ending credits in the game to see their usage stipulations, as most of them are in the creative commons under a CC-BY or CC-BY-SA License, both of which require a link to the artist's page.
Also, some of the music that is/will be used in the game was obtained through license purchasing, so not all of what's in their can be used legally unless you pay for it like I did. If it's not creative commons, it probably isn't safe to use without the license. Just a friendly warning, take heed or not.

UPDATE: I'm back, everyone! :D
Gonna be burning the midnight oil for a while with Kankara. I've been working on the thing for a really long time, and I feel that it should have been done already (6 years total, that's just a crazy amount of time for this kind of project), so I'll be working harder to try to finish it quickly and diligently.

To this day ONWARD, your WORK is at LEAST as INSPIRING as FUCKING LEGEND OF ZELDA

You IMMORTAL Fuck ( - Spoonyexperiment.com - me is Krolan. Hi again. Sorry. only 109 downloads? Understand the Hiatus. Love you. Take care. )

EDIT: No Double-Meanings willfully implied!!!!!! - I talk about your GAME, not the underlying political issues of others - C R E A T O R!!!!!!!!!

Lol I appreciate the positivity, and now (many months later), I actually have the time I need to work on the game, and with that, it will be taken out of Hiatus.
I appreciate everyone who's stuck with me these many months and waited patiently for me to return.
And so, I will be returning to work on this game once again, and will try to get it done asap for you all :D
I will be posting updates from time to time, once again, as well.
If any of you have questions or concerns about the project, or just the game itself, please don't hesitate to send a message to me here, I'll try to check it at least once a week and will reply asap.

UPDATE: This project has taken quite a while to actually work on, and during the time I have been working on it, I've also been dealing with some stuff at home that has hindered my progress. While I do not intend on giving up on this project, I do, however, have to put it on hold until I can put the time I need to, into it. The demo will remain up (unless the link goes dead, but if that happens, please do PM me here), so you all can enjoy what's been finished so far. I will return to the project ASAP. I apologize to those who have waited so long for this game to be finished, but with my current schedule, it could take the rest of this year before it's even close. Thank you for your support so far, and please do stay tuned for my return, I will do my best to come back to it quickly.

I guess you stopped.
Oh well, I did, too.
Hope you're doing well, wherever you are whatever you're doing.
Take care.

Actually, I'm still going lol. It's been a rough year, at this point I don't know when I'll be able to finish SoK, but it's still in progress. There have been a few times where I thought about canceling it, due to numbers, but I decided to keep going. I haven't had much to update you all with, though, hence, my silence.
I also haven't been checking these pages for a while, but since I'm getting posts, I probably should.

But rest assured, I haven't given up on this project.
I guess you stopped.
Oh well, I did, too.
Hope you're doing well, wherever you are whatever you're doing.

Hey everyone! Jaden here. Just wanted to update you guys on what I've been doing as of late in terms of the project. As you all know I've been working on this project for a long while (maybe you didn't know that lol), and it's an ongoing process. I recently finished concepts for bosses and boss-pairs, though haven't added them yet. I also have been adding side quests and mini-games, as well as a mining system (to get materials for the smith's workbenches). While these new features won't be in the demo version, I thought everyone would like to know what will be in the final game when it's finished.
I've also been working hard on areas and map finalizing, since some of the maps in the demo are rather plain and bare (like Nemus), adding trees and flowers to make it a more full forest as it should've been from the beginning.

Also, as Kiana had stated previous in this topic, the stealth system in the demo (only a few scenes) seemed out of place for this kind of game, so I have revamped it completely for the final version (not the current demo, unfortunately), and instead added a disguise feature that allows the player to get in restricted areas.
Special Thanks goes to Kiana for helping me look at that part of the demo with some scrutiny, that helped me improve the game even more :D

Two things for everyone as well, I have a bit of an announcement regarding the demo itself:
There are three secret items in the demo:
The Harp, which allows you to play songs for effects (though the version in the demo will change probably, and uses a script that someone wrote in inspiration to zelda).
Band of The Warrior, Which increases your damage output.
& Gauntlets of Defense, Which increases your defense.

Enchanted armors like the Band of The Warrior, and the Gauntlets of Defense can only be equipped one at a time, so you can't have both at the same time.

How to get these items? All I will say is it requires some bombs and waiting through the credits (after it takes you back to the game), the where is for you to find ;)

I also added a short video showing some of the music in the game, not all of it is in the demo, though.
Also, on that note, I realize that some are downloading the project strictly for the audio, you have to check the ending credits in the game to see their usage stipulations, as most of them are in the creative commons under a CC-BY or CC-BY-SA License, both of which require a link to the artist's page.
Also, some of the music that is/will be used in the game was obtained through license purchasing, so not all of what's in their can be used legally unless you pay for it like I did. If it's not creative commons, it probably isn't safe to use without the license. Just a friendly warning, take heed or not.

Well, I think that's about all I will post for now, happy hunting/playing, and I will try to keep everyone up to speed on the development of the game as I work on it.

Thanks for your interest, and thanks for playing!

Just wanted to update everyone on a new feature I just coded in (and one that surprisingly is simple), it's 'Regional Windowskins'.
Basically, the appearance of the menu will change, depending one what place you're in. For example: If you're in a forested area, it may look like leaves and green, if you're under water, it may look blue and with water-like designs.
I'm still in the process of implementation, but so far it looks very promising.
author=Krolan
In relation to this: Do not try to hit F12 and then reload. This crashes the game. If you want to reload without restarting the game, go to menu>Quit>To Title

Yeah, that's from the custom title screen, though I've been looking into that as well. I don't know if I'll be able to fix it, but I'm getting ever closer to the solution, I think. Easy work around though, as you stated it's menu>quit>to title.

I also want to say: I did not experience the scrolling glitch. Which is strange, since I'm accustomed to weird glitches because I have Windows 8, the OS that hates everything older than itself.

author=Krolan
Well, I must admit I am using Windows XP (because I'm stubborn like that). Good that it didn't happen to you :)

It may just be from an older graphics card, though I'm not sure how it would only freeze that one room lol. I run Win7 personally, but I'll see if I can run in XP compatibility mode later and see if that triggers the screen glitch.
Well, everything before that room was actually laggy pretty much everywhere. One spike hit me right at home with grandpa, than it was fine, just a little laggy every 4th step. That room started out laggy as hell and when this happened I was conviced that my game froze. After trying a second time I realized that only the image froze. Everything after that room, or after the dungeon, was completely lag-free. I also wonder how this is possible. Oh well.. ^^'

I updated the Bug section of my review to reflect Kianas experience.

A question to you, Jaden. Are you familiar with the Legend of Wesnoth? oô

That's pretty odd, I've seen some really strange bugs while primary testing, but I don't think I've seen one that picks only one section (although, it tends to be process heavy at times, so if a program was open during this time, that could be it)

And, no I'm afraid not. What is it?

I hope you will try the demo again, or if you'd prefer to wait for final release to try to full game.
Well, I'm staying subscribed at the least. Really, the rest of the game looks great, it's just that one little part I have a problem with.

Indeed, thank you for your interest. And again I shall endeavor to make that part better :)

So I can't get past twelve minutes in due to lame stealth mechanics. The guard by the lantern chest always spots me. If I try to hide in a dark corner, he spots me. If I get too close, he spots me even with his back turned. If I try to keep my distance, he'll turn around and come back as I loot the chest. He seriously caught me RIGHT AFTER the dialog box closed the first time.

Also, the chest doesn't reset after the guard took the lantern from me and threw me back into the dungeon.

Speaking of that, a bit of a flaw in logic: The villain seals the princess in crystal for getting in his way, but only throws the hero into the dungeon. The dungeon cell with a hole in the wall and an open door. And the guard has his back turned and also, apparently, isn't carrying a sword. Putting the hero in one of the other cells and having him find a way to open the door would make it, well, less dumb on the villain's part.

I do want to say that the (brief) combat segment I got to experience was good. The keyboard controls take a bit to get used to, but work quite well. The maps are pretty good, the music is good, the animations are good... It's just that the mandatory stealth segment really drags it down. I'm sure I'd love the rest of the game if I could play it. But I went in expecting Zelda-esque action (which the game does well), but then got thrown into a stealth game. Kind of a reverse Deus Ex: Human Revolution there.
Ouh. Yeah. I actually ran into that problem, but only because I tried to get past the guard, ignoring the chest. You basically have to keep a 2-tile-distance from him while his back is turned, grab the chest ASAP, and run the other way. It worked for me. Notice that you can save anywhere anytime also (In that case, right before you enter, If you'd consider retrying).

That is really the only stealth segment in the game, which serves more as a prologue, which is why I didn't mention it in review ^^' sorry for that.

Edit: I just ran it in compatibility mode for XP (SP 3), and nothing froze. It may just be hardware related, but I can't be sure, myself.

Also, a tip on that guard; you have to follow at just the right distance to get in and out with enough space between you both, it can be difficult, but definitely possible. ;)
Which would be fine if I went in expecting a Metal Gear Solid or Deus Ex-like stealth game with combat, but nothing suggests that. So my main issue is that it's an entirely different game genre than I went in expecting, and that rubs me the wrong way. Similar to Deus Ex: Human Revolution promising stealth and subterfuge, then throwing DOOM/Halo bosses at you in mandatory combat. It's not the inclusion that's the problem as much as the sudden shift, combined with the demanded precision, that's the problem.

I also want to say: I did not experience the scrolling glitch. Which is strange, since I'm accustomed to weird glitches because I have Windows 8, the OS that hates everything older than itself.

I understand, I will endeavor to outline the necessity in this section of the game to sneak around (though it's pretty much going to be the only section that does it that way). I hope you will try the demo again, or if you'd prefer to wait for final release to try to full game. Thank you again for the feedback, it helps me to enhance the game and to make adjustments to suit a wide range of players, as well as fix some issues.

Also, you make a very good point about the dungeon cell, I think I'll redesign that part with a door or something, I never felt too satisfied with that part anyway.
Thank you for trying the demo.

The RMN Short-Trip - Episode 1 - The Secrets of Kankara; Action-Adventure by Jaden
Subseries of The RMN Journey

Hello, Krolan here. I got bored again. So I searched the most recent entries and found...

A non-standard Opening Screen is rare and therefore admired

Well, no time to waste. This is a Demo of a Work in Progress.

Story - Evil never dies

The Story features some old stuff and his grandson. I think. They're at home minding their own buisness, until...

Umm... Zelda... wrong game. You were supposed to bother a dude named Link over at Hyrule... oh... no? He's sleeping you say?... allright then.

It kinda reminds me of the classic Final Fantasy. Go gather crystals, because some evil dude wants to use it for himself. Seriously, why even bother to create those crystals if all they do is sit there until some bad dude wants to get them and so a good dude has to gather them beforehand. Maan...

Ok, I'm being unfair here. The Story is obviously unfinished yet and it has its own identity. I just wasn't able to extract it. There is a little Exposition Talk which shows that there is more to it than that.

Gameplay - You sure your name isn't Link?

Like in Zelda the Grandfather here tells you to stay home while he handles the problem, unlike in Zelda he has common sense and realizes his fragile bone-structure after you convince him that he is slow as slug. He tells you that you'll have to find your own sword, so you take your lantern and march into the evil castle to save a princess.

At first you're just sneaking up to the barracks and beating a Guard unconscious. Soon enough you find a sword (which you steal from another unconscious guard... why you didn't loot the first one is beyond me..). But now the gameplay really shows what it is about. You can strike your enemies with your sword, you also can do a few combos.

You lose your sword and find another Sword, one with magic propertys. You walk around and destroy bushes to get gems and other Items, like Bombs...

...search for Keys,...

...fight Enemies...

...and Bosses...

...solve Riddles...

...and craft Items.

A solid representation of what we can anticipate. I really look forward to it, a shame that it will take a while til it is done.

Regarding Graphics in this ~2hour Demo we have an enchanted-ish calm atmosphere, which is reinforced by occasional rain, a time-system (with effect on NPC's) and water effects. Not to forget: an awesome sword-move!

Items - Bombs that go Boom and the Bumarang of Doom

This Demo shows a simple but effective Item System with 5 equipable slots which are additionaly shown at the top right corner. It shows Sword, Shield, Armor, Accessories and the special Item (Bombs, Bumarang, etc.) The Sword is used with the Action Key, the Special Item with the Shift key, or with an Xbox360-Controller respectively A and X. We find the classic selection here, like the grappling Hook...

Sword, Bomb and Boomerang have all a rather decent attack radius, so hit detection is a non-issue.

Everyone who loves Zelda will also love this game.
Don't mistake this for a clone though. As said, the game has its own identity and the system in implemented flawlessly.

But the download is not only worth it because of those implementations, it is also worth it because of the Music. A mostly MP3-Selection can be found in the BGM folder. Hell, the download would even be worth it if it was only for the BGM. Some scores will let the heart of those who love tactical-strategy-RPGs beat faster.

Definetly a game of much potential that will hopefully blossom to all our enjoyment :)

The Demo is about 2 hours long, perfect for a short evening. If you are at all interested, give it a try! It's not a difficult demo, probably so anybody can try everything out.

Bugs - Those ugly little pests

No Bugs remotely worth mentioning, certainly nothing that will affect the gaming experience in any way. However, there is one I stumbled upon, I don't know if this is an issue with the game or on my side, but I'll present the workaround.

If the picture stops moving exactly here

Then know this:
Your game is still running. You still can move. If you move to the left far enough you will notice the picture moving again. Don't loose heart, it will be over very soon. Just keep going to the right (keep slashing your sword also, from this point there are 2 guards left) until you hit a wall (just walk right for about 5 seconds) and then go up. After 1 or 2 seconds you should be in another room and the picture is back moving again. Except for this one room you will never meet such an issue again.

However, you have to return to this room 2 more times shortly there after. This time no enemies and the same rules as before apply. So the second time, just go right and then up again. The third time you come actually from the right and will most likely have the blackscreen from the transion. Just walk left to the point where the picture starts moving again.

Anyways, Great Demo, I'll wait impatiently (:P) for the continuation :)

Thank you for trying my game, I certainly enjoyed the review that you wrote and am glad you liked the experience.
I'm unsure what is occurring in that room that froze the screen for you, primary testing hasn't yielded anything, but I'll continue looking into it and check possible causes.

If anyone else runs into the bug mentioned, please do let me know, just by knowing how often this bug occurs (and where) I can trace commonplace events to that location and see if any of them are causing it somehow. Though it's kind of odd that it only happens in that spot lol. Thanks again for mentioning this :)

@Kiana:
Yeah, I apologize for the large file size, that's mostly just default sounds that take up a ridiculous amount of space, but don't worry, the final version of the game won't have all of that because I'll be going through and deleting unused sounds (which I should probably do sooner rather than later).
Excellent review, Krolan. You've convinced me to subscribe.

The game looks really promising.

EDIT: Hooboy, 283 MB download. This'll take a while.

Another bug was mentioned by Kiana:
"So I can't get past twelve minutes in due to lame stealth mechanics.

Also, the chest doesn't reset after the guard took the lantern from me and threw me back into the dungeon."

To avoid this I recommend using the save-feature which allows to save anywhere anytime right before entering the room with the chest where the lantern is hidden. Jaden intends to get rid of the bug itself and even rework the stealth segment entirely.

In relation to this: Do not try to hit F12 and then reload. This crashes the game. If you want to reload without restarting the game, go to menu>Quit>To Title

Anyways, Great Demo, I'll wait impatiently (:P) for the continuation :)
