Demake means turning a 3D game into a 2D game. I will be making the Final Fantasy 7 into a 2D game using RPG MAKER VX ACE. Keep in mind, only because it's a demake, it doesn't mean I'm making everything identical to the3D world. What I mean is, when I do the mapping, I might place things in different locations, or I might make it look slightly different. Nevertheless I will do my best to make sure everything looks and feels like Final Fantasy 7. I will do my best to sprite, and map as best as I can. In addition to all that... I will make Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge playable characters. I will give then unique weapons, and abilities. Who knows, I might even make Zack a playable character somehow!

Gameplay video (BETA)

I did take a long pause from the game, but the demo is nearly completed. I just need 2 maps before I finish the bombing mission. Barret is still incomplete. The video link below shows everything I did so far, the game still needs tweaking, but for the most part it's playable.

=) What are you good at when it comes to making games max?
I'll give it to you straight, and offer you some constructive criticism.

This project as it stands is DOA. Square Enix will be sending you a cease and desist letter as soon as it's anywhere close to release.

Here's what you should do instead.

Gather a small, dedicated team of game makers who have completed at least one game before, so you know that they have enough dedication, swear each other to secrecy, and work your asses off to finish thie project, and then have your whole team beta test the game yourselves, and then release it completely anonymously to every website that you can. Square Enix can stop you from making a game, but if it's already complete and on the internet, all they can do is try to stop websites from hosting it, and you know that that'd be impossible to do for every website out there.

Don't remake this because you want recognition for it. Do it because you want this game to exist.

I desperately hope that you take my advice, as I would looooooove for this project to complete itself. You would open the door to other game designers completing remakes like this.

Please Jin, Max, and Trihan, be an inspiration!

I doubt square enix will do anything... There is another FF7 project on here called Final Fantasy 2D remake, and more of them are out there. I am doing this game not to be noticed, I believe in-order to do that, you have to make original work. I am doing this cause I love 2D oppose to 3D, but thanks for the advice! I will release a really short demo soon!
Great, another unfinished 2D demake of FFVII, I wish you luck but you know, with the thousands of unfinished demakes, remakes and fan games of final fantasy...

Idk, by all means play any of the heaps of games I've made (several are actually complete) over the years and years and years and years I've been around and form your own opinions on that front. I can't compose music at all but other than that I can do at least a little bit of all the shit that needs to get done in order to get games made. Also, and I'm almost positive I already told you this, but I primarily consider myself a writing and/or mechanics/systems guy. Those specialties are not super useful to this project, but there you go.

@MorteTorment: I seriously do think you are overestimating Squenix's degree of give a shit but we'll see.
Guys I know I don't have the best track record when it comes to releasing games, and I understand the fear of the game never being finished, but my track record is due to data lose. This time I have back up. I promise I'll finish it, no matter how long it takes. I believe once you get the sprites out of the way the game is pretty much finished because I'm going to copy direct dialog from the game. If anyone (including you max) wants to help out you can. Making battle animations like fire, cure, thunder, etc, or helping make the skills. Those are the two things that will take sometime for this game. I'm copying actual game item, weapon, monster, writing, and character stats. I'm even copying mp cost and skill damage perhaps. So in my opinion this shouldn't take so long. I would be grateful if someone could make battle animations for me. That would be a great help.
HOLY CRAP!!!! That's every sound in the game I think... to bad they're not named, lol. Better than nothing!
Yeah, lot of repeats too. But shouldn't take you too long to match them up.
Looks interesting. Have you played that FF7 NES remake? I didn't get very far but from what I played and what I heard, the game is quite faithful to the game. The game was just a real chore to play. I thing vizzed.com has it if you haven't played it.

Perhaps because it's an 8 bit game :p
Its not because its an NES game, the enemies had WAY to much HP. I'm not kidding when I say that every battle seemed like it takes 20 minutes to complete. Maybe its just me...
Well if thats the case... I can assure you this game will have the actual monster hp as seen in the ps1 ff7 game.
Sounds cool. How will you handle balancing the game? Ace is REALLY bad at balance small numbers.
Yeah balancing will be a bit difficult, but I will use the limit script which allows to go over the 999 limit I'm more worried about making the skill damage for things like magic, but little by little it will come into play. At the moment I'm trying to figure out why the pre title opening movie isn't working, and making more sprites.
I saw you guys sussing out my remake project so I thought I'd swing by and take a look at yours. :)

Firstly, its good that you've put demake in the title of your project as that takes pressure off getting everything exactly right (which was my goal). You're going to run into A LOT of people who won't "get" your project or why you're doing it the way you're doing it. I aimed for 99% accuracy in mine and the feedback I got was often polarised by comments like "why bother?", "why not make an original game?", "why are you making a 2D version?", etc. Stick to your guns, make what you want to make, and release it.

Secondly, people are going to warn you that you'll get a C&D. This isn't true. Square only aims these at projects with a defined and impending release date. Don't give people warning of when its coming and you're in the clear to just release it.

Also if you haven't already found it TFergusson's FF7 documentation on GameFaqs is an invaluable resource with most of the information you need about spells, etc.

I do have some (hopefully) constructive criticism for you guys:

1) Don't bother making Biggs, Wedge and Jessie playable. That's a lot of extra spriting work for characters that die right at the start of the game. I'd suggest making subtle improvements like having a real, convoluted way of resurrecting Aeris, and adding some extra mini games to Gold Saucer. But I'd suggest not investing in any changes until you've made more progress with the story.

2) You need to improve your mapping. In my project I spent days contemplating which way the map should even face. One of the biggest considerations is because FF7 is somewhat isometric there are multiple ways to orient the 2D versions of the maps. The trick is to pick the angle that shows the most detail. Even though you've picked the same angle for the train station as the real FF7, you've also picked the angle that has the least detail in 2D (all the interesting textures are on the left wall, and you only have a top view of the train now). Personally I think you made the wrong decision because it will be extremely difficult to make this map look like the real one now.

3) Don't use 3D assets from the real game unless they're placeholders. If the point of this project is to make a 2D version, you shouldn't cheat by using 3D assets everywhere.

4) I can already see you've taken some liberties with the battle system here. Trying to get the RMVXA battle system to feel like FF7 is an uphill battle as they're totally different. I think at best you're going to end up with something superficially similar (same spell names, damage, etc), but it's going to feel very different because FF7 battles are very fast and asynchronous (you can select one character's abilities while another is attacking - RMVXA's core doesn't work this way).
Vanit, I appreciate your opinions, ideas, concerns, and criticism, but my game isn't a 99% replica of FF7 psx.

1) First of all... If your goal is to make your FF7 a replica of FF7 psx 99% accurate, changing the train scene angle wasn't the brightest idea. Look at it like this, the FF7 nes used the vertical map for the train scene. I understand that its a 8 bit, and whatever, but I just want to make a 2D version of FF7. I know my decision to make it vertical, and not horizontal would hinder my chances to add details on the wall, and make it look move captivating, but again I want a 2D version of FF7. However even though I said I might change some mapping, I want to do what I can to transform things in FF7 into a 2D retrospect. I'm not the greatest spriter, but I can hold my own. And for anyone who would tell me why I am doing this, the answer is simple. I am a big fan of 2D RPG games. If it wasn't this game, it would had been Suikoden 3.

2) For whoever is doing warning, I don't buy them one bit. If all those fans of pokemon haven't gotten sued for all those pokemon fan games, my low budget FF7 game would be over looked.

3) Again I must elaborate, my goal is to make a FF7 that plays like a 2D game, not a mirror type FF7 game like you did with you. Don't get me wrong, your game looks AMAZING. Cloud fights, and moves like Cloud from FF7 psx, but that's not my goal. I was being nice when I made Cloud move the way he did. I could had just made him move like the generic FF6 battle style. Now concerning biggs, wedge, and jess being playable characters is something new, and even if they die very soon, that's okay with me because I am use to the temp characters within RPG games. FF 2, 3, 4, and 6 all have those. So if you think about it, it's an element within FF games. Furthermore I don't mind spiriting at all. And who knows, I might just make Aerith become resurrected with a secret dungeon.

4) My mapping, and your mapping are two different entities. Your maps looks awesome, but you're putting to much thought into it. Don't get me wrong, that's not a bad thing to do, but I just want to sprite, and make a game. I'll look at what FF7 psx has to offer, and I'll try to make it 2D, or I'll just add stuff I think belongs in there. I think using different camera angles isn't a bad decision. I just want to do as much custom things, and I want to add as much original ideas as I can to a great game. All of you guys will let me know when I release something what I should change, and what I should keep.

5) My fighting system is good. I have an ATB script which makes it fast. Unlike you, I am not a programmer. In order for me to even make something close to FF7, I need the scripts made by all those great programmers.

6) I do agree with you when you said "Don't use 3D assets from the real game unless they're placeholders. If the point of this project is to make a 2D version, you shouldn't cheat by using 3D assets everywhere." maybe I should make it 100% 2D, but for now I will leave it like that.

ALSO at the moment, their is no you guys, I am a one man team. The only support I am gotten has been from the script makers such as William. My girlfriend, and joe who has helped me with drawing, and spriting, and my brother somewhat. Even though max said he would help, he hasn't.

I don't see any constructive criticism in your post, but I do appreciate your criticism :). Thank you!

P.S
Focus on your game, and I'll focus on mine. Instead of criticizing me, you could be releasing a new demo for us. :)
Appreciate you taking your time to respond to each of my points. Obviously we disagree on some things (given we have different design goals), but its good to see you already have a clear idea on where you're taking this.
