It's Christmas Eve, and Lieve has completely forgotten to get gifts for all of her friends! Rather than dare face the nightmare that is shopping on Christmas Eve, Lieve instead embarks into the depths of the Krampulian Abyss in search of its treasures (which, legends say, all make great gifts!)

This is a short action game where you search out presents. But Lieve can't fight, so she has no choice but to flee the monsters she finds. Includes:

  • An underground dungeon to explore!

  • 15 gifts to collect (only ten of which you actually need to beat the game)

  • Done-at-the-last-minute art! (and the characters don't match the in-game art-style at all!)

I wanted to give a gift to RMN this Christmas for being such a wonderful community, so in December of 2014, I started putting this game together (At the last minute, you might say). I hope you enjoy this short, silly adventure!

Thanks for featuring Last Minute Gift!

Thanks so much for choosing Last Minute Gift as the Featured Game for December 2019, RMN! :DDD I'm so happy that people enjoy this game!!!

I've made a super-slight update to the game, adding the Fullscreen ++ script to the game, so you can now get a better fullscreen by pressing F5 during the game, or double the window size when playing normally by pressing F6! Please enjoy, and Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and have a wonderful new year! ^_^

@karins: I see that image for, maybe, five seconds before it becomes the "broken page" icon? Weird. Still, I was able to open it in a new tab, and appreciate the reference!

Haha, I had to finish up my secret santa gift, so I'm behind on replying to everyone. :P

I gave this a go because unity pointed a candy cane at my head, except that it was actually a Wand of Blasting why not. I found some areas were a bit harder and more frustrating to maneuver for me. Flyers are the absolute worst, and the bane of my existence. Also, outside of the Forgiveness Medallion, I could not remember for the life of me where the locked doors were when I found the appropriate keys. This may just be my sometimes-poor memory than anything else, though.

Frustrations aside, it's a very cute game, with such a heartwarming send-off it's not even funny. The cameos were also nice (though I'm certainly more than slightly biased on this front), but, I can't help to wonder if some of these gift-names are also, somehow, based on various users, or their games. Such as, Unknown Technology (Which might be a bit of a stretch on my part), Mirror of Adonia, Nick's Mantle, and Misstare Mask. Perhaps I'm reading a bit too much into this!

Glad you enjoyed it despite the frustrations!

I hate to disappoint, but while there were a few references in the game, the only one you were right about was the reference to nhubi, as Lieve's comment about a mask-wearing friend meant to hint to. The name of the mask itself is a reference to Lunar 2: Eternal Blue, and the character of Leo, who dons a similar mask and calls himself "Mystere," expecting his identity to be perfectly hidden.

Just like all of your games: Packed full of heart and charm.

That was a great game, unity. And the ending put a big smile on my face that I won't be able to get off anytime soon. Not that I WANT to, mind you.

*applause*

I want to echo this. It was certainly nice to see!

Thank you very much, Red! And thanks for offering to test it out for me at the last minute! That was really helpful ^_^

If you're right then given the message on that particular gift, I'm honoured, though I think you're probably reading a little too much into some of them, still why not, it's Christmas after all, fun is supposed to be had...and I did, Unity this was lovely...and now I'm humming sugar plum fairies and it's all your fault.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it, and also thank you for the lovely review! ^_^ That really made my day.

And yes I made a reference to you XD I always enjoy reading your well-written reviews and the helpful insights you bring to discussions!

Call me slow (like, really slow), but, I'm starting to think that unity's a magical girl that fights evil with the powers of love, friendship, and GAMMAKE!

Heehee! <3 This is making me want to do a Sailor Moon-esce magical girl team game so bad! I've had some ideas for one for a while. But I have a lot of other games to finish first XD

I'm sorry to say I probably won't be able to play this game before Christmas. Which is ironic, but also kind of fitting. I promise I will eventually get to it, though.

Aww, bummer I can't play this. Silly VXAce. -_-

But hey, the game page went up on my b'day. XD

Whoops, I got you a gift you can't play! >.<;; Sorry! I'm going to PM you a message from the game, though, Yuna, because you're one of the people who I really admire in this community :DDDD

You know, I think I vaguely remember Leo, now that you mention it. It's been a while since I've played Lunar 2 - Eternal Blue, as it was my brother's and he got rid of it some time ago.

Yes! Let there be two magical girl games on RMN! That I'd be aware of, at any rate.

Hooray! :DDDD I'm so glad you're enjoying it!

I've got a question for everyone that's played: I was building on my ideas for a sequel, and I was thinking, an RPG where Lieve has learned how to fight and is joined by Mina and Kim would be fun. But then I would be completely changing genre for a sequel.

So, does an RPG with those characters sound fun, or would you rather have another action game, or some sort of hybrid of the two? This would be released as a future year's Christmas present, just to be clear XD

My vote would be action game because this game already has a nigh-perfect setup for it.

Lieve gets an unmarked package, but it's not long until the sender is known. It's a Wand of Blasting! BA-DA-BOOM!

I dunno if you would want to use the same eventing and scripting that the other game uses, or if you know of a script that does it better. I mean, make no mistake, I would be greatly honored if you chose to use my system, and would probably make a helluva gift! However, I must consider that the game is supposed to be a gift to the site as a whole.

Not that I wouldn't mind seeing a more traditional RPG with Lieve, Mina, and Kim. Though, if the two ideas can meet. Hrm! Might have to think on that a bit.

Why not both? You have more characters now, so more gameplay styles seems appropriate. Lieve can still avoid enemies, while Kim and/or Mina can fight. Kim would make more sense, seeing as she now works for Lieve and should be able to do things that Lieve cannot.

Just off the top of my head, perhaps Mina gets captured and taken to a fortress, so the pair has to rescue her. Kim can fight enemies and cause a distraction while Lieve sneaks into the fortress? I dunno, I just made it up. There's a whole year to get this figured out!

Well you could have Mina train Lieve in some basic self defence, after all she was fairly worried about her down in the Abyss and though she made it back, I still think it would be something Mina would fret over. But she would play to her strengths. So Mina has vampire strength but also uses magic, Lieve falls into the thief category and Kim would be a paladin type, powered by a god but with some combat skills, also some form of rats summoning ability, that would be cool.

Actually that could work with Red's idea about a split party, Kim and her summoned rats are the distraction whilst Lieve and her super sneaky skills get into wherever Mina is being held and free her, and then once that happens pity the fool who imprisoned a Christmas Vampire.

Oh and by the way, "PSICODREAMS - Ten Degrees Below Christmas" gives me chills whenever I enter that bloody place. That song belongs in a SnowOwl game. It's ultra creepy!

well while it was cute at the start the lvl of getting smacked around my monsters unless you wish to w8 long enough to ascertain each monsters movements
make me ponder if the creators goal was to create some distain for holidays

a good challenge isnt a bad thing. i personally at this point in time care more about the storys and characters of games
not this dodgy frustration that is just a chore.
if you take you time yeah its not that difficult. but i don't want to just sit there for that.
worse theres no map or anything so you need to remember a fair amount of mapping to figure out where to go and where you have been

i did not enjoy this much but can see others who have different reasons for playing like it.
tho playing games on the rgp engine for challenge is quite questionable.
its nice that these exist for diversity.

Recommended for people who don't like to rush and like dodging things a lot
if anyone has the metal to do a full lp for this with both endings hit em up with a link ill check it out

Edit
for the truly hardcore you should of added a 1 hit death mode XD
or is impossible to not get hit at all in certain areas?

After considering your comments, I've added both an Easy and a Hard mode. Neither of them change the enemies, but in Easy mode you start out with twice as much life, and there are extra Level Up stars available. In Hard Mode, you only start with two life and there are LESS Level Up stars.

Hopefully this will allow people who want a different difficulty to still enjoy the game! Thanks!

PS. There's still no map function available, as I consider exploring the abyss unaided as part of the challenge of the game. At least now East mode will give players a lot more breathing room, though ^_^

"Oh, no, not the bees! Not the bees! lol Other than those bees it was a great game Unity. Best Christmas game I've ever played.
I see you recently added an easy mode so I'm sure the bees are less frustrating when you have more life.
I think it was a good call not to include a map. It's a maze after all, plus you designed the areas with enough character that after a while you get a good understanding of the place in your head and that's part of the experience.
Speaking of the areas I love the atmosphere of this game really well done.
This is really impressive work made in a short amount of time.
If you ever decide to make another Christmas game for next year I'll definitely play that too.

While playing Last Minute Gift I realized that without consciously knowing it, I had always wanted to make a game like this. But now I won't have to, because you already did it, and way better than I ever could.

Despite its (theoretical) simplicity, this game is loads of fun, and the art is gorgeous. I can't believe you managed to create this all in just a few weeks!
The hardcore sections may be a bit extreme for my tastes (both difficulty- and graphics-wise), but I still enjoyed this game a lot.
Oh, and is it weird that as a character, I actually liked Mina more than Lieve?

I did however come across one small bug (I played the original version, so I'm not sure if you've already found it):

The teleporter that appears in the room after this one transfers the player to the wrong place.

I also have another question just for fun:
I didn't get all of the inside jokes behind the gifts and their recipients because I don't know most of them. But I did recognize Zero from Soul Sunder, and wondered what gift is actually intended for her. Could you tell me?

... Though looking at it now, she still shows up even if you didn't find them. I just assumed they were cookies!
