Move aside Final Fantasy Tactics, Shining Force, Fire Emblem, and all those other pretenders. Capital "T" tactics is returning in this 5 hour grueling grind fest. Throw away any ideas of story or deep character development because Broken Gauntlet is 5+ hours of 2D turned based tactics.

Broken Gauntlet is an experimental game that combines GTBS scripting with RPG Maker VX Ace. The AI is intelligent and actually spends time thinking about what it should do. I have also included the ability to change the difficulty from within the menu at any time, which works well with the New Game Plus feature.

Update on New Tactics Game


In the last announcement I said I was going to make a tactics game. That was sort of before I actually got really started. The game is in hot development now and is going well. There are some changes to what I'm going to be doing. First I won't be using the High Fantasy Pack for this game, instead opting for the DS Resource Pack. I had three reasons for doing this:
1) I'm not very good at mapping with the High Fantasy Pack.
2) The High Fantasy Pack lends itself to a more serious story, I wanted to do something light.
3) While it's possible to make a tactics game using 70x70 sprites, it's better to use smaller ones.

This game will take place in the swamp and will likely feature the use of 4 party members.
Enemies will be visible on screen and when touched it will transfer player to separate battle map.
The game will have puzzles such as pushing boulders, jumping, and super running.
I will be trying to make the game file RTP independent.
The game will have a name not related to Broken Gauntlet.

This game is so old I don't even remember what happens in it.
I only know that it was the only GTBS tactics game on this website at the time.
So at one time, in the history RMN, I could claim to have the greatest tactics game on this website.

First of all I stopped playing when I got to the snow map, because the gameplay was way too easy.

This game is NOT easy. The difficulty gets a sudden spike around what I assume was the final part of the game. I think hired sword also did this.

For a tactics game its extremely luck dependent. Its a 50/50 shot who gets the first turn. Which means, if the enemy gets the first turn they will all rush in on the healer and take her out in one go. Thats extremely dumb since I can't do much about it because enemies have very high movement points and your starting placement doesnt help as they can all reach you on the first turn anyway. Not that it matters though, the healer only can heal for 100-400 which isnt much when the enemies all focus on one character. But yea, I was done with this game when the enemies keep getting the first turn and im not gonna reset till I get the first turn, that is just ridiculous.
I've just started this game and I really like the battle system, its the best one I've found that's tactical turn-based. The only thing I dislike is that the enemies arn't very strong, and are in small numbers so each battle is relatively easy, at least so far.

I'm a big FE fan so I was super happy when I found out it IS possible to make tactical turn-based battles in RPG Maker, I look forward to finishing your game!
Don't worry about it. All I can really say is just keep trying with your games, and don't give up. Truest me you'll one day make a great game, that will get a high score. Just keep at it. :)

That's okay. Lots of people hate my games :)
Don't take this the wrong way, this is just my opinion of the game.
First of all I stopped playing when I got to the snow map, because the gameplay was way too easy. The enemies did no damage what so ever. The story is okay, it just needs polish. I can't say much about the maps because I am not good at mapping myself, but they maps have too much space in them. Above all this game does have potential, it just needs polish, and needs to be balanced a little better so it's not too easy, or too hard. Sorry if I was harsh, but I honestly find no point in continuing to play this game.

Yep, when you press esc over a character or enemy you should be able to see their accurate moving, attack, and special move distance. The script is likely not able to calculate this correctly for some reason.

i forgot to add

its funny Edward keeps going on and on about turning you all into real men when half your party are women :3 i was almost expecting a comedic moment where the 2 girls either suggest he is gay with the obsession of men or have them be like if this will turn us into men screw the mission :D

I just finished this game. It may take me a while, but just to give you (and me) some makerscore I decided to make a review of this game.

It will be better than the 1 / 5 rating someone gave it on Game Jolt.
That system doesn't even require an explanation.

Knew about that skill description thing. Caused by script problem likely.
Not sure if this is caused by the ring system of the battle system though.

Didn't know that the estimated distance thing wasn't accurate, though.

After the battle is complete I make the enemies disappear. This is better than after the battle seeing the enemies still standing there like they are alive. Though I could have also gone for the option of not seeing the enemies at all until the battle triggered. I went for the best option I had in my opinion.

The end of the turn thing is a script problem. I'm guessing caused by the ring menu system. Since when you open the extra menu it doesn't open as a ring. This was likely an over sight by the developer of the script. I still prefer the ring menu over the normal one though.

I just finished this game. It may take me a while, but just to give you (and me) some makerscore I decided to make a review of this game.

random thoughts

quick to the point intro!

no info for character in status screen :(

if you click on a skill in battle but dont use it and back up to the skill screen the descriptions for the skills will be gone

pressing x on a character in battle does not show accurate range ottmar is a example of this

the short delay between actions and watching enemies disappear 1 by one after battle is a bit annoying
in short this could be improved



Review
Overall look

As this game is game much more then anything else this will be short feed back
first ill say the time to complete this is around 5+ hours
(severely depends on how much grinding you do)
if you ever played games mentioned in the summery up top or vandal hearts as another example that is how it works

in any order when its your turn you can move/attack/defend with all characters on your team unless its changed ina future version you can end your turn any time you want by using the menu (x) and ending your turn. this how ever has a glitch with the move command so defend to avoid this

the story is simple really. your a guy with no story who is there to help his country out and you fight to protect it. nothing more or less

as thats the majority of gameplay (all of it really outside the small tidbits of dialog) if you dont enjoy the battle system you will not like this game!


Closing
if that style of battle interests you i highly recommend this if your looking for horror,romance,fast paced action or a deep story this will not be for you.

personal note

i do wish the final enemies has less life. 25,000 was a lot really. would of preferred 20,000 for both but thats me

Thanks for showing that problem to me. I didn't even know you could open the menu on an empty square and end your turn. So always make sure to end your turn by guarding or doing some other actions.

Also the move glitch is not permanent if you guard in your following turn.

but that didn't address the move command being gone during your next turn.
i understood the mechanics because its the same as fft and a few others but the move command is not supposed to literally be missing on a different turn

edit
i tried to recreate the glitch but it worked properly the second time thru the training stage.
but on my second and 3rd turn the feet that is the symbol for moving was not there.
not sure what happened

I downloaded the game from RMN just to make sure this worked.

Here are the directions:

Press Enter, opens ring menu, select move, press enter again.

Select the square you are moving to and press enter again.

At the new square press enter to open menu again. Now select command (note you can make other commands before moving as well.)

Here I will just guard.

After you choose guard press enter. You can choose which way the character faces. Press direction button and enter again.

Pictures show directions I just followed in first battle scene.
You can make command before or after moving. If you choose move
and press enter right away then you have chose to move to the square
you are already in. I believe you may have done this.

Also note that with multiple characters you don't have to
use the character that the game slots for you next. You
can move the grid to select a different character to make
actions first. The enemy won't get its turn until you
have completed all the characters actions.

got to this today. and 1 minute in i have a dumb question :3
how do you move?
i mean after i used the move option to move to a different spot on the board it was disabled for my next 2-3 turns at least it seems.
is this intentional?
oh and by disabled i mean the move command is no longer there

I think I'm the first person to upload this kind of game on RMN.

The script is easy to implement, but difficult to master. It's incomplete and has bugs. And there's not a lot of help out there for newbies to it.

I did the best I could with what was in there, but I hope Enterbrain gets off their butts and makes a dedicated engine for this.

I've seen the tactics script before but haven't played a game that uses it well yet. I'll have to give this one a try and see how it plays :D
