A short oldschool game

The "forgotten game you probably ever heard and nobody reviewed" of this month is I dreamt of vengeance.

This short game lets us play as Dyluck, an adventurer that leads his Vaccinator Warriors against the Virals Army (what? No, really!). It's the final battle and everything seems going on smoothly until a certain point... but I won't spoil the short story!

The game consist in lots of combat and some exploration. There are no puzzles or side activities, and there are not resurrecting items, but luckily the save points also completely heal the party.

Combat is the Rm2k standard system with front view characters and no battlers, each character has different abilities that cost TP, and some characters are more useful of others, but it's not a problem until you are alone. At that time you should level up fighting weaker enemies (escaping the others) until you have some company (and a high experience level too).

This game uses standard RTP and charsets, even if maybe some resources and monsters comes from other sources, but I am not sure. Anyway the result is a coherent scenario, and mapping is ok (nothing special, but serviceable and without particular errors) except for some parts where you can walk on the walls (es: the cell).

He's right. This isn't the end of the game, it's the beginning!

Ok, so what's bad about this game?
Well the first problem is that there are no resurrecting abilities or items, so if Dyluck dies during the mid-level boss, expect a game over even if you win the battle. And that's too bad! (Due to the low level and scarce healing available this happened to me four times on six tries!)

Then expect to fight a lot. No wait A LOT! (and grind exploiting the save/healing points is clearly suggested) in order to defeat the strongest enemies and the final boss. Luckily the hardest opponents also gives you some excellent healing items and consumables that permanently enhances your characters. Use them on Dyluck, since he's the only character you will use until the end!

Last bad thing is that, while writing is quite good, story leaves a lot unexplained. Well maybe it's my fault because there are some hidden parts to unlock (I am not totally sure... I should check the game files but I am pretty sure I've explored 99% of the game). Or maybe not, the whole story is surreal and mysterious, but lot is left unexplained and makes little sense. Despite this the game isn't totally bad.

Verdict
So, I said that the game is not totally bad and I gave 2.5? Well, yes, because I expected more, not about the lenght (there was a warning about this game being short) or difficulty (once you level up a bit the game becomes quite easy, even if still repetitive) or graphics and resources (I've no problems with them even if these aren't original). The problem is with the story since I expected much more, writing is not bad but this is just a dark fantasy game with some surreal elements. I liked the final score indication, but that's all, I wished for a more complex and weirder experience.

But yes, this experience is almost a 3 for me. Almost!
