Masud did a terrible thing.

Now he wears the Mask of Odion, a cursed relic that's forced his soul into the body of a mummy. Worse is Odion himself, the former owner of Masud's new body.

Keep walking, sweetheart, Odion says, his phantasmal jawbone clacking and clattering. Every minute we spend in this God-forsaken desert is another minute your body rots in my tomb.

An ocean of sand stretches in front of them. How many more miles until they reach the tomb? How many more days until they break Anuket's Tear and lift the curse?

Features:
- Traverse a winding pyramid and other beautifully designed but dangerous areas in exploration-based gameplay.
- 33 relics to collect that boost stats and grant powerful new skills add layers of depth to the turn-based combat.
- A story featuring four well-developed characters with a focus on mystery, duty, and living in an unconventional family.
- Solve puzzles and riddles, and use relics to unlock new areas, while listening to the game's original soundtrack. You can get it here.

Born Under the Rain's Soundtrack

For anyone interested, I finally got around to uploading the soundtrack. Everything should be free to download and you should be able to stream as much as you want:

You can get the soundtrack to Born Under the Rain here.

Also, if you like my music, I've uploaded the soundtrack to The Heart Pumps Clay as well. You can get it here.

Enjoy!

Egyptian setting? Not exactly what I expected from a game called Born Under the Rain, but the idea sounds pretty cool regardless.

Also, I think you got the target completion date wrong, as it's the same as today's date. You're not really gonna finish it this evening, are you?
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

We totally are. We've been working on it for the last three weeks for the game jam event. Minus some last-minute testing, it's already finished!

interested :D do your best!
Started playing this today, just an hour in so far. (which puts me on the second trip to the pyramid after returning to town the first time.) Enjoying it so far, though my amazing ability to repetitively fail to read the words "Once per Battle" has screwed me over on more than a few strategies o;

I found the first boss battle dragged on a bit longer than I cared for, but the regular battles so far have been nice. Masud seems to be the most important character on the party though - maybe I'm doing something wrong, but he hits the hardest, his healing spell is one of the best, and he tanks well too. Almost all my battles end up skewed towards him. Rashida is second - again she tanks well and her one time drain skill allows her to tank quite as long.

I'm mostly confused with Odion in battle. He doesn't seem to have many strengths? (outside of his revive spell, which is one use only - which yes, I got slapped in the face realizing that one the hard way) For the most part, I just used him first to drop enemy defense before using the hard hitting physical skills with everyone else.

When his magic is buffed his first move can be okay, but it always felt more bang for my buck to use the defense dropping skill instead.

Masika's AoE spell ... didn't feel very useful at all. It never hit for enough to make it worth using over something else. (especially when you have those enemies that use Illuminate and can way outheal your damage output if you aren't efficiently maximizing what you do each turn.)

Maybe I'm missing something about magic attacks - so far they just feel inferior in the cases of both characters who lean towards them.

Question about the skill that you get from the snake fez um... Pale Wind. it says it heals 25% of the User's maxHP to the party, but when I used it the total it healed for the characters was not the same. (Masud was the one casting it. He had Rashida healed for more than Odion and Masika.) I found this odd, since the User's maxHP is a constant and so it shouldn't heal less to two out of four characters?)

I like the use of small maps and big maps, it sets the mood well for crawling through tiny spaces and main rooms as we move about. I have a feeling now that the place has opened up I'm going to get lost pretty quickly - but I the first bout in the place was easy enough to navigate. The town was really cute. Small - but it has a lot of personality and the NPCs are charming. The merchant that wouldn't shut up and the girl in the magic place stood out. They were some of my favourite personalities in the game.

I have access to one 'major spoiler' and noticing tiny little nods to that entertains me. So far the game is well written (with only one instance where I got annoyed by a double use of a word in a sentence), but the characters haven't had much time to show their personalities fully yet. I'm not done though.

Wonderful work on all the customer sprite behaviors. The one where Masud jumps into the pot was especially well done~ and I love the animation when he gets an item. PLUS! His mask is sprited so well~ As the one who drew that mask, I was delighted to see how it looked on the sprite.

Anyway, so far this is a well constructed game. Congrats to everyone involved for finishing something that looks this polished. I'll come back with more to say once I've completed it.

Phew - It's so nice to see an actual completed game with my art in it that I didn't play any role of development in. I think this is the first time that's actually happened! :D

Pale Wind seems to work properly almost all the time, so I think the problem is just failure to notice/remember that the enemy used Sealed Restoration on you, but it's possible there's a weird bug.

We're going to be updating the game with a few minor changes later today, and those include some minor adjustments to the strength of certain skills and enemies. Magic attacks do become more impressive later once you start getting magical relics, though.
Played a little:
Cool pyramid at the start! Love the panning.
Short intro, lets player take control quickly. Excellent.
Toggle to run/walk instead of having to hold the button down. Excellent.
Don't really care for rtp style chibi characters
Battles are a little long. Enemies could do with less health in general.
Ah, nope it was probably sealed restoration. I had no idea what that state was doing to me. At first I thought it meant I couldn't USE healing spells, but that wasn't it. Then I thought they would do 0 if I used them on someone in the state, which also wasn't it. Didn't catch onto the fact that it might have been healing less.

Is there a place where the states are actually described that I missed? Because most I just tried to discern through situation. (I opened the Controls and Info txt file and didn't see anything mentioning them.)

Might be something to consider adding in there. I know it's hard to describe states midgame (especially when the game starts away from civilization, so you can't just play the ol' library that explains stuff card), but putting in the txt file for curious minds would be simple enough and appreciated.

There's an icon for each one with an arrow pointing up or down plus the name of the stat that's affected. The only exceptions are sleep and stun, which are hopefully self-explanatory, and sealed restoration, which I tried to give as obvious a name as possible. Not a 100% perfect solution.

We'll put the status effect descriptions in the instructions text file in the new version.

OK! The new version is up!

Changelog:
- 24 additional achievements
- Uplay account integration
- Banner ads now display region-specific content
- The frequency that Algalon the Observer uses his black hole attack has been reduced
- Damage during PVP battles has been reduced by 10%
- Fixed security issue related to Flash plugin
- Mac users should no longer experience processor overheating during the anime FMVs
- A new type of booster card packs, platinum packs, are available in the shop for a limited time for 200 credits
Additionally, all the little issues I pointed out above are fixed. The current version is more or less finalized, barring unforeseen bugs and potentially some rebalancing/difficulty settings in the future.

The game has been updated again.

This version has an actual new feature: difficulty settings.

You can now change the settings to easy mode if you want to destroy most of the normal battles without spending so much of your precious time, or hard mode if you're a true-blooded gamer in search of intense strategic challenges. I was originally planning to postpone working on this update for a week or so while I caught my breath, but the adrenaline hasn't totally worn off yet, so you guys get it early.

(If, for whatever reason, anyone wants the original version that was released by the game jam's deadline, just to prove that it existed, it's here.)

probably 70+% done with the game and so far i love it indeed the battles are the only downside for me.
its not that they are boring per say the design is well done.
i just wish i could skip them and or at least win faster.

so that mode option is a great idea. i dont remember which game it was but a person had a difficulty setting and on easy your main character had a skill called story which instant killed everything (it may not of worked on bosses not sure)
for me thats a awesome feature to have unless the selling point of the game is the battle system

it made the game alot more relaxing not to need to stop every other minute to make a note!

^i liked them all :D

Gameplay

as i played the version with no difficulty choice...expect 3-5 hours of gameplay
it consists of exploration, battles, puzzles, story and strategy.

Overall I enjoyed this

This game was extremely entertaining and outside the puzzles which visually didn't fit with the theme. i feel it captured the era and feel of the culture and times fairly well.
i always looked forward to checking out the next artifact when i found one :D

the battles in the 1.0 were fair but at points i just wanted to skip them and move on.
The ending was satisfying :3
the music which i rarely mention due to it usually not really being important to me was also fitting for the theme and helped with the immersion

Closing
i highly recommend this game. and hope it gets a highlight!

Other

1.would improve if had a new game+ in which you keep money, lvls and relics
main downside to this would be having multiple of the same relik which would hurt immersion
Hey, thanks for the feedback, Shayoko! I just now saw the edited version of the post; I'm glad you enjoyed it!

@Makio: I should've mentioned this earlier, but working with your facesets was a blast; I felt like I got a lot of mileage out of them. Also, I'm the one responsible for frankensteining Masud's sprite together; he used to be a kobold and a guy with a cloak, so I had to do some edits to make the mask actually look like a mask instead of a dog head. Art's not my forte, so I'm glad he turned out alright!

For everyone else interested in playing: don't be afraid to go with the easy mode if battles are too lengthy. Easy mode gives a modest reduction to boss hp and normal enemy damage, but the only major reduction is in normal enemy hp, so if you're playing normal and finding the regular encounters to drag a bit, go with easy. You can change the difficulty at any time, so play around and pick the one that best suits you. Only go with hard mode if you're insane, though.
Just finished playing through the game on normal, it was fun. The difficulty felt mostly fair, though some battles did drag out a bit. Finished in a little over 5 hours at LV18 for the whole party.

Liked the humorous bits, and the story & characters were pretty good. The original soundtrack was also quite nice, definitely fit the Egyptian setting. I also like the original tilesets.

Overall I don't really have anything negative to say outside of the battles dragging a bit, but certain relic strategies can speed them up a good amount, so it's not really that big of a deal. I did experience one crash during a battle, it was the battle in the far-right side of the colored block room under the Sphinx (the one where you have to mix 2 block colors to open the doors) but it only occurred once so it's probably not a major deal.

I missed one relic somewhere, not sure where it could be, I may go on a hunt for it later just to call the game 100% done. Anyway, good game, I wish you luck on future projects!

Downloaded and played for a few minutes.
Really nice so far.
My only question: Why do you guys always make it so damn hard for us old folk to understand and remember the rules for battle? :(
Can't you just make us strong and the enemy weak and be happy with that? :)
Just joshing, but semi-serious :)

Nothing worth doing is easy!
@Kyubey: Glad you liked it! I'd let you place my soul into a magic crystal any day.

@Linkis: There's definitely a lot of complexity to the player skills, but easy mode should give you a lot of leeway. Plus, if you die, escape from battle, or win, your party gets a full restore, so there's nothing wrong with making a few mistakes.

Thanks Housekeeping.
I ALWAYS choose normal when starting a game with choices.
If I find I'm dying to often, I can always go back and kill those monsters with an "easy cheat" called EASY :)
