NOT THE BEAR!

Kindergarten is a very simple, effective, but almost too long horror game.
Taking about half an hour to complete you spend 5 peaceful nights cleaning a certain Kindergarten.

The objective is simple - you want to earn some money. You see an ad in the newspaper offering you a job. You take the job and start cleaning. And with cleaning, they mean picking up 5 bags of neatly tied up garbage scattered around the building. In 5 minutes or less.

I will be completely honest and say I laughed out loud when I entered the actual Kindergarten. There is no introduction to any danger awaiting, and there is no happy face to see first - you start out in a dark place with limited vision and an ominous tune playing in the background... in a Kindergarten with children's shoes lying around, brilliant!

Yay!

Yet with the occasional jumpscare and more and more children chasing you .. you soon dread the time and the building, and the bear. OH GOD THE BEAR.
You do work under a constant time limit .. but this time limit is not one in which you need to achieve your goal, instead you pick up the garbage in the first minute, and then spend another three minutes waiting and weeping in a corner until you can leave the building.

The problem here is - after only a few nights you got too good a handling of the building, its inhabitants and your cleaning duty. You found you can just stand near the exit and wait for the time to tick off. And it is at that point that the dread and the fear goes downhill - even with the addition of more children chasing you. The one tune you hear throughout the game may very well be good and creates an excellent atmosphere, the shading gets a reddish tint, but even the tune gets old on you.

Bear sighted near the entrance. Abort Mission. Abort Mission.

Children will either show up suddenly, or stand around inactive until a certain time (you can even talk to them), before they start chasing you. Their movement speed varies from child to child (as they are unique), and they will occasionally backstep.
None of them are too big of a threat, with the exception of the bear who is as fast as you and can easily chase you down if you are in a bad position.

Scatterd throughout the buildings during the nights are little bits and pieces describing their once happy life and possible missing people and murders.
There is little to build a coherent story with, so you are left guessing with a few hunches. Apparantly there is enough to be discovered to get a clear picture - but while certain things are clear, others are not so much.
You do have the option to revisit specific nights, however.

Stylewise, this seems to be very similar to Five Nights at Freddy's. Starting with the 5 nights, someone being targeted by accident, just being somewhere where he should not be for a job, as well as cryptic notes building a fleshed out story only by your extensive thinking and imagination. Maybe.

Considering all that .. it was still a fairly engaging experience, which would benefit from an even tighter frame (or a changing building).
Good for a quick scare, but too repetitive to keep the tension as it is building up.

Nice review. However since I have happy memories of my childhood bear, I'm not going to play this and risk ruining them.
Thank you!
I love bears. Not this one.

Wow! Nice review! Thank you a lot!

Also, I'm glad that you observed that before chasing, the dolls are just sitting.. A lot of people miss this.
And yeah, you're right - ("would benefit from an even tighter frame (or a changing building).") - but it's a short game, it's only 1 part of all (5), and all the parts are making a full game. (Also the 5th part will be different from the first 4).
You are very welcome!

Yes, I already observed this to be more of an episodic game.
Still, you will play only one part in one session. And repetition will lessen the impact - I think you handled it very well, but the peak is at the third night without doubt.
I have to admit I am not too much of a fan of the cryptic message and story-building type of games. I may need to crank up the ranking slightly, but it comes down to a simple idea and a not yet existing story. This one had a really nice tension going, though.

I started the second one and find it less engaging, but I will have to see. I am too tired to finish it right now. Will probably go back to the other episodes a few weeks later. There are a lot of event games coming up.
