Midgard: the cursed labyrinth. It's been there for as long as history can recall. It's as dangerous as it is mysterious. For centuries, explorers, scholars, treasure-hunters, vagabonds, and adventurers have come. Around the Labyrinth, a town full of these people, and those who support them, was born. It is the town of Labrys.

It is not uncommon for these explorers to band together. A band of seven fated explorers soon find themselves working together. Will: a restless young swordsman, Maya: an amnesiac, foul-mouthed monk, Ashton: a noble guardian of Labrys, Roy: a vagabond with a terrible secret, Ian: a scholarly priest seeking the truth, Mimi: a scatterbrained mage seeking her teacher, and Sarah: a street-savvy rogue with a sharp tongue. All of them seek different things out of Midgard, yet they are drawn together by circumstance.

What will they find inside Midgard? Fame? Fortune? Love? Only the fates know...

Updated often, so check back on this!

NOTE: As this is an early-concept demo, there may be issues. It may have glitches, balance issues, and other problems. Let me know what you think so I can fix and improve on this.

KNOWN ISSUES (as of latest release) : There is a glitch involving the plant monster on floor 5. Certain movements may cause the plant to invisibly respawn. While in Midgard, occasional slowdown is still present at times. This is due to heavy scripting and high event content. Please be patient and allow the dungeon several seconds to load fully.

Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated. Good, bad, omgwtf, tell it all! I only ask that you be nice.

Thanks and enjoy!

The download is still bugged. If you leave Midgard after you've entered it for the first time you'll be unable to get back inside.

Huh, I thought I fixed that long ago. There was an early issue with the teleporting event not working. I believe I fixed it with this new upload. Try this update. Thanks for your time!
Well, after giving the updated download ago I have even more complaints oddly enough.

While running around at one point I got the following error:

Script 'EventSpawn 1.2' line 326: NoMethodError occurred.

Undefined method 'vv' for nil:NilClass

Another issue I encountered was that I sometimes was unable to leave the stage without the usage of a Recall Rune.

Another issue you need to work on is the rate at which enemies and what not spawn into the stage. I've sometimes had entire hallways get filled with enemies or flames and have been forced to retreat through the usage of a recall rune.

And the game will sometimes fail to let me back into the dungeon still.
Bad spawn rate? Yikes. After another test, I see what you mean about the spawn rate... I'll reduce the max spawns and spread them out a bit in the next version. It was supposed to be challenging on occasion, not outright impossible! I overdid it a bit.

I've never seen that script error before. I have no idea what I could've done wrong there. (I'm no good at Ruby scripting.) I'm using a lot of scripts, so I'm really hoping it's not a compatibility issue! Did it happen on a floor transition or in the middle of play?

Being unable to leave an area though... which level does this happen on? Is it consistent?

Thanks again for being patient with me. I greatly appreciate this!
It happened on the first floor. Though it isn't a consistent issue. I've only had it happen once so far out of four attempts to work my way through the demo. Usually my run will be foiled by the fact that I'm unable to get back inside of Midgard.
After much trial and error, I think I finally figured out the problem. It's fully playable now, though some new mechanics aren't fully implemented yet. The new version 0.2 has greatly improved spawn rates as well.
It is worst than ever. Inside the dungeon everything is slow motion and the monsters are all over the screen. It is not playable.

I have never seen the slow motion problem before. I will try some different things to see if I can replicate that. As for spawning in walls, I just now fixed this. The alt download has the latest bugfixes until I can update RMN's download. Please do not be discouraged, as this is a work-in-progress. Thank you.

*RMN's download is now updated as well. Apologies to all who experienced that embarrassing mistake.
Are the dungeons supposed to be so empty? Besides the monster spawners there isn't much going on. I've also only ever found money in chests, not sure if that's intended. The majority of the dungeon is a deadend, and you usually come off of a Floor finding a single chest. Then I get to Floor 4 I believe and have to fight a Plant monster that kills me in 2 turns. I even went back to town first and got around 18 additional pts of Defense in gear. I hope you don't expect me to sit at those monster spawners grinding the same slimes, especially since they only give 3 exp.
Right now the game is just boring. I'm not sure why you made it so the Vendor can't sell you Weapons at the moment, since they would be a huge help. I ended up getting to Floor 4, was still level 1 and simply gave up. What you need to work on is motivating the player. You've given me no reason to care about what happens next, or how powerful I can become. Do that and I'll gladly give the game a second chance. Good luck.

Thanks for your time! You've made some very valid points. I know the story is bare in the beginning, so I extended the introduction sequence. How so? Let's say it directly addresses that motivation issue...

This demo was released before I implemented some new systems and techniques. In version 0.3, you'll be able to upgrade weapons by crafting with materials. You'll also be able to create accessories this way. This is why you can't buy weapons yet. You'll also be able to "purchase" new skills with AP points earned by leveling up. This will grant you the ability to access powerful skills that are otherwise unobtainable.

I realize it's horribly balanced right now, and that's another thing I refined in the upcoming version. Slimes will give far more experience, and a rare enemy will appear on occasion, which gives a massive amount of experience if you successfully kill it. Difficulty will be adjustable at will, so you can adjust your rewards/challenges as you feel like it.

More things are to come, so keep watching! I'll release v0.3 soon! (Maybe a week or so? Gotta make certain the game is balanced and engaging this time...)
Some first thoughts:
-> I also experienced HUGE lag upon skipping to floor 2 (luckily it went away when I backtracked)
-> EXP rate is ridiculously low. The battles do not feel rewarding.
-> My battle strategy is "spam enter until he dies" which is not a strategy you want your players using (it's boring). Special abilities would add some interest here.
-> I won a battle and got this:

-> Why is there a revival potion with 1 character in the party
-> A problem with the randomly generated dungeons is that you can literally just exit and enter the dungeon until the stairs spawn right next to you if you want to cheese the game.
-> The dungeons are pretty much empty which doesn't make it feel like you're exploring anything, just wandering. The good games that do random generation of dungeons have lots of things in them. For example Pokemon Mystery Dungeon has like 5+ items per floors sometimes, even if the item is just 5 gold or a berry. It has random traps, water, gates, random shops, etc... and even THAT gets boring after a while, for me at least.
-> Character seems too weak. You have to heal every 3-4 battles, and at that point you're no longer exploring, but instead sitting next to the exit farming enemies to level so you can get farther.
Thanks for the input, it is greatly appreciated! There's a second party member if you can reach the second enemy on Floor 5. That's why there's a revival item.

V0.2 has a lot of issues that I'm carefully ironing out right now. The upcoming v0.3 will have many, many improvements, including additional traps, goodies, and surprises in the dungeon. It also will be greatly rebalanced so that grinding/healing isn't so annoying. As for that slowdown bug...I only recently found the culprit. It has been fixed and will be in the new release as well. Due to the nature of the random dungeon, a random spawn point will be very difficult. I'm going to work on trying to get that fixed... Abilities will be re-added in the new version too. I was having issues with the battle engine that have since been resolved. As for that script error you encountered...I've never seen it before. Weird. Does it happen often or was it a one-off?

Again, thanks for your info. I expect to release v0.3 soon, so please bear with me...I don't want this release to be such a rush this time.
The script error occurs every time I level up.

I got this error when I tried to craft.
That's odd. It was working earlier... :S I'll see what I can do to fix it. In the meanwhile, it looks like the forging and smelting still works! I should have a bugfix ready in a day or two.

EDIT: Found it! Pesky extra space typo. Uploading fix now...
I finished the demo. I don't know if how this is you intended it to go, but I bought a pickaxe with the starting gold, mined about 5000 worth of bars, and then crafted or bought all the best things. The basic slimes couldn't even do a single damage to me at level 1 and I was 1-shotting them. The plant did like... 200 total damage before dying.

There are like 5000 falling rocks each level and seemingly no way to predict/avoid them (kind of annoying)

It doesn't seem like the levels are randomly generated; levels 1-4 looked exactly the same to me.

Also when the plant jumps down and you beat it, it moves to the side. If you also move to the side, you fight it again and permanently kill it. This created the strange effect of having those ? and ! bubbles pop up over nothing.
I'll see if I can find out how to fix this. How do I keep missing that stuff? >_< I guess it happens when you're flying solo, hehe. Thanks for finding these things and being so patient with my glitches. The new dl just finished uploading, so the alchemy problem is no more! At least, I sure hope so...!
Most frustrating game. I bought a pickaxe and it broke in first attempt. There is no save point. Why don't you play it yourself at least for first 20 to 30 minutes and if you feel comfortable then post the game. For me I am done.
You can save via the Escape menu. And I was able to mine at least 1500-2000 worth of ore with one pickaxe, you just got unlucky.
