Inspired by the short story, "Up the River" by futurist, Mack Reynolds.

For millennia, the Olympians and the Yarzul have ruled the galaxy in constant conflict with each other. Having ruled benevolently over this section of the galaxy since the dawn of man, the Olympians have lost a recent war with the Yarzul, and Earth was the prize. Five years later, in the aftermath of the human resistance, the survivors cope with living on a world in which innocents are chosen at random to be slaves and where even a slight encounter with the Yarzul can mean death.

But the more things change, the more they stay the same. People live quietly in small communities, city and national infrastructures around the world have been restored, and in a small Arizona town, there lives Uiyi. She's an alien, a member of another slave race conquered by the Yarzul. She lives unnoticed by the Yarzul as a teacher in this small community, where outside the classroom, there's nothing more interesting to do than watch TV and try to get control of the rat population. Still, she's haunted by the memory of her past life; a memory filled with violence and loss.

The Yarzul mostly, though not entirely, ignore this town. Most of the people here are unsuitable as slaves; either too elderly, or former soldiers who'll make trouble. One such soldier is Jack, the man who rescued Uiyi from the Yarzul. If not for Jack, she'd have nowhere to go. Jack's the only one who would take her in. Aliens aren't popular this day and age.

While the people of this small community just try to live quietly, there are whispers of unrest, an underground movement, a resistance against the Yarzul overlords. These whispers speak of a suspicion that Jack, his former teammates, and Uiyi may hold the key to victory. Unfortunately, they just want to get on with their lives.

This is a traditional RPG with branching story lines. A demo is ready and available. Remember when playing that this is only part of a very rough draft. I'm looking for unstarred reviews and feedback.

Update

Hello everybody!

It's been awhile. I thought I might let you know that I have a working revision of the demo. As I've previously said, it uses Battle Symphony with Holdens Battler scripts and has quite a bit of adjustment on the dialogue. The only thing that has really held me up is that I don't really want to upload an updated demo until I have some better battle themes. Fangstiltzkin has written a great battle theme but thinks the game needs one for pest control and one for enemies, to which I agree.

For the rats, they no longer respawn, though they will respawn when the player has reached key points in the game. I haven't looked at the rats for awhile. I think they respawn at least once during the demo, but I can't be sure. I may also decide to give you a longer demo, and let you get into at least one story branch. Previous saves will not work. I'm sorry. The addition of the new scripts will break your save files.

Well, that's it for now; just keeping everyone in the know. Thank you so much.

Oops! I forgot to add Ayene-Chan to my credits and I'm sure I used one of her door sprites. Uploading a demo with the correction.
I'll try to make time to work on this tomorrow. I was thinking about doing it after I finished recording the main story mode for my Let's Play of Naruto Uzumaki Chronicles 2, but ran out of time to work on both this and Skill Hunter.

Gave this a whirl. The introduction of Uiyi is something of a mixed bag. I mean, I appreciate the science lesson, and the character development that happens with it, but also including the history lesson was a bit much. It was quite a bit of information for to take in at once. I definitely appreciate the playable flashback, though.

Hrm. Perhaps it might be better if, once the question is asked about where she comes from, give that flashback, then, as she shakes the memories off, she can do her history blat?

@thesacredlobo I'm so sorry! I haven't been checking up as much as I should have and your let's play got buried in my notifications. And no, she doesn't just leave that journal anywhere. Those are placed at points that represents where she was when events occur or where she lives. I gave a lot of thought to how I would do save points in a way that fits with the character and didn't look totally out of place.

@Marrend I have a lot of problems with that scene, too. If I were writing a book, this never would have been explained by one of the characters; it would have been discussed in background narration. In fact, the very reason I made Uiyi a teacher was because in my mind that particular role made the exposition partially forgivable. I'll try moving the transfer to the top end of the text and see if that doesn't look better, but I'm really thinking of reworking that scene entirely and splitting up the information throughout the game, but I don't want Uiyi to be that much of a mystery. I want her personal history to be an enigma, but I want it to be clear WHAT she is.
I am testing out this game now im actually playing it but im just wondering who should i give all my power up too and resist up too etc that way i can stick giving those to one character so i don't even up screwing up and giving it to the wrong ones i gave the gun guy one life up i havn't touched anymore since then when they ask uiyu something won't go into details because don't want to give out spoilers but when its on her turn i been grinding non-stop the hunter's please tell me what im doing is not in vein please tell me her level will travel through out the entire game? and will the guy with the gun's level match her's while in in a different part of the storyline? also is there a way will we be able to use are save's on future updates if not can you find a way to make it work

@MKnance You save at the little blue books you see scattered throughout. I personally recommend giving your power ups to Uiyi because in the demo, Jack's not going to have any really challenging enemies, and in the full version, I'm not sure I'll use any power ups. Also, you shouldn't have to grind. The demo, as it stands, if you fight most of the enemies you see, her level should be plenty to deal with the boss. When fighting the boss, focus on him. Ignore the hunters. They just respawn until you've killed the boss. After the boss is taken care of, then deal with them. Also, use the aura sword skill; it silences the boss.

I'm about to upload an updated version of the demo in the next few days. I've finished all of the battlesheet animations for the characters and the enemies you encounter in the demo. Hunters now disappear when you escape. Characters are all at the same level. I've changed some of the writing. Also, I've taken out the tutorials, thinking they were probably a bit much.

I've finished it now i just gotta wait for the police station update then ill be able to continue
Short demo. I immediately got reminded of the avatar movie on seeing this. Anyway I have no idea where the police station is so I cant progress further. Battles are very easy and there arent much of it anyway, this is a story heavy game after all. This could be interesting, but I imagine its quite difficult to come back to some basic RTP RPG after making fancier games.
