A Whole Bunch of Gifs

So, I've been posting screenshots for screenshotsaturday on twitter for a while now. If it's a static picture, I upload it here, too, but a lot of the times I'll make a .gif. I figured I could just let them build up for a bit and post a lot of them at once, so here you go!

Disclaimer: some of these are fairly old and aren't 100% indicative of the current build. You'll notice that things actually have shadows now in the last .gif. The text in the battle .gif is more appropriate now, too (I think it'll say "Jimmy throws a Super Ball" now). The .gif quality is also kind of CRAPPY sometimes so I can make it fit tumblr's file size requirements.

These are really impressive! I love the way you choose what monster to turn in to. Was that hard to implement? It has kind of a Secret of Mana vibe to me.
@Punkitt: Thanks! I thought that turned out pretty well. It's also got a really nice sproingy sound when it pops out of the ground.

@Unity: That wasn't too hard to implement--it's mostly pictures and condition statements. The tough parts about the transformation system are the field actions (mostly because of having to put in each little interaction) and the skill equip system. That one's a doozy.
I love the cartoon style of the flower animation--how you have the thing stretch vertically higher than it needs before doing the cartoon-ish "bounce" that makes it feel so lively. Non-bouncing would make it feel more like paper unfolding, which would have a different vibe. This works perfectly for the setting. :)

I'd like to submit you think of changing the color of the flower petals. I know you've already considered the connections to Undertale and whether they could end up being detrimental or not, but there's such an unfortunate coincidence between any flower you have of that type and iconic Undertale imagery that it would be good to reconsider even a small palette swap.

Looking great so far, man!

Well, it's a happy little SUNflower.
I love the sheer amount of effort put into how this game looks. Getting sprites to do some of the thing you're doing certainly isn't easy (at least not the way I'm doing it).

But what I think is most impressive about this game so far is that it's in the style of EarthBound, but without being an expy or too close to the source material like a fair number of EB-like projects out there. Jimmy is different enough to be not only unique on its own merits, but recognizable as well. That's a very refreshing thing.

One question: Has the battle UI evolved much since that first GIF? I like the setup, but I also have a hard time not seeing the whole "Default Yanfly Engine" look. Just curious!
@Merlandese: That's definitely a fear of mine, and I know that the sunflower and Flowey are going to be at-a-glance comparisons people are going to make. And, if it was just an aesthetic thing, I would totally give him pink petals, but the fact that it's a sunflower is fundamental to its design. Sunflowers have a cheerful connotation, you encounter it in a sunflower field, the cadence of "happy little sunflower" feels right, etc. Whenever I do a promo video, I might not make the sunflower very prominent so as to downplay any comparisons people might make, but, yeah, I want to keep the current design.

@SgtMettool: Thanks; I think Jimmy's style started out by ripping off Earthbound (see: flowers, grass tiles), but I started getting more confident after drawing stuff for it for so long, and I think it's taking shape now.

The battle UI is still default Yanfly. I think that design fits enough, but I would totally be open to changing it, mainly so it can stand out. I'm going to have to actually pick up some coding once summer hits so I can get the battle backgrounds animated the way I want, so I might be proficient enough to change things up then. I haven't really looked into changing the UI; do you have any script recommendations for that? I love the look of Soma Spirits's UI.
I've been using Luna Engine for my UI needs. A lot of it is just plugging in and moving around different numbers, importing assets, and seeing what works. Everything in Yuusha was done with Luna Engine as well, so I really recommend it if you're looking to make it stand out more.
I had a feeling that was it. I'll definitely check that out as soon as I get some spare time. Because of mid-terms, I've been grading nonstop for the past...eight days now. And I think I'm about at the halfway point.

Please send me a gun with one bullet.

I'm going to make this a big deal for a second and then I'll let it rest. I don't have any stake in the matter, but I feel like we're already against a wall of stigma when using RPGMaker, and you're up against another one simply by being similar in style to Earthbound, so if you can avoid any Undertale comparisons I think it would be super useful in terms of getting people interested. :)

The Happy Little Sunflower works well as a sunflower for all of those happy reasons, but there are LOTS of other happy flowers. It's semi-easy to pick another type of happy flower (daisy, for example), or be as inventive as you are with other things (like the Red-Billed Squawker). And even though making concessions against your original artistic vision is crap, and swapping assets and wording and what-not is hard work, I still think it's a lot less work than trying to defend these decisions. If this were accidentally starting to look like a Flappy Bird clone, for example, I'd suggest that making the main character something other than a bird would save you more effort in the long run than defending against accusations over and over that you cloned Flappy Bird.

Still, you're likely to keep it as a sunflower, which is fair (especially considering you have a "light shine" ability which is pretty dependent on the name "sunflower.") But even so, it could look more like a sunflower and less like Flowey. Sunflowers have pointed petals, and a lot of them, with a much larger face. The Happy Little Sunflower is a great idea but it looks like a dandelion, or whatever dandelion-esque flower Flowey looks like, and that in and of itself is something that could probably be changed a little bit just to try and deviate from the Undertale connections.

In short, make the petals pointed and not round.

So, um... yeah. That's my advice. XD Sorry if it's invasive.
No, don't apologize--you're right on all counts, and I'm glad you're calling me out on this. You're also pegging some of the psychological reasons I don't want to change; I'm super stubborn about having to change my vision for a game that came out during my production, and it's going to be work changing it. Yeah, those are definitely reasons for my immediate revulsion to the idea of change, and I'm glad you're calling me out on that.

I'm going to heavily consider your suggestion. I can deal with the extra work--it's the pride thing that's getting in my way, and I should get around that. I'm a little worried about making the petals pointy, though, since it would make the flower less approachable, but I'll toy around with redesigning it--maybe making the petals thinner but still with rounded edges will work. A lot of this problem is in the field design; in battle, Flowey and the Sunflower look way different. There's a fear, too, that having ANY flower is going to illicit Flowey comparisons, but any kind of distance I can put between their designs will help.

Thank God I didn't make Jimmy turn into a goat.

Ahahahaha, damn you, punkitt, you beautiful bastard.

That's it. It's going to be easier for me if I just change Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass to an Undertale fan game.

I got you covered, House.

Otherwise known as Jimmy and The Unfortunate Connection With a Very Popular Quirky RPG With a Happy Flower Character

i spent 20 minutes on this and i think i took the joke too far WOOPS
If it makes you feel better, I almost had a character in Soma Spirits called Boxie the Box. But now you can't really do "(noun)-y the (noun)" anymore, so don't feel too bad; it's not just you! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Wha-what have I encouraged...

Jimmy and the Sunflower's expressions are killing me, man. Christ.

@SgtMettool: Damn! Did someone make a comment about the sentient box formerly known as Boxie or did you decide to change it unprovoked?

Haha, I'm really glad I could invoke that reaction! Makes me feel good. c:
And yeah, I could barely keep it together when drawing Jimmy. I was stuck in a giggling fit for a bit!

(Personally, Helga's face is my second favorite!)
