Meet the Mangrove Gang!

As COATS pass 1000 downloads, we decided to do a little celebration. Let's introduce you to a new set of characters - The Mangrove Gang!
In our upcoming title, Crackerjack, the Mangrove Gang are Celia's main allies in the quest to become the city's greatest weapons dealer. They are a small-time gang that suddenly gets thrust into the politics of the city, where they have been forced to pick sides along with Celia. They are a gang themed around the use of masks to hide their intentions, but showing their nature. So let's get to know them!

From left to right, let's make some introductions:

First up is Pike. The leader of the Mangrove Gang. A common street robber and lowlife, but loyaly to his friends. Laid back, witty and quick as a gunshot. He wears the pike to remind himself of better days, and as a symbol of his quick, unpredictable personality.

Then we have Poe. Poe gets into a lot of trouble, but is basically the computer guy. He likes to specialize in surveillance and... questionable targets. He wear's the black cat's mask as an homage to his favorite writer, and also, well, because he kind of likes cats. He's on the internet a lot.

Then there's Tiel. Tiel is still a bit nervous about this whole thing. She has an artist's soul, and she was never really meant to be in this business. Still, here she is, and with her understanding of the cultural, she is a great advisor when it comes to the PRB. She wears the cockatiel mask as a symbol of her gentle, social spirit.

There's also Boaris. His name is based on a stupid pun that only he finds funny. He's straightforward and simple, yet fiercely loyal. He wears the Boar's head as a symbol of his simple, yet violent nature.

Finally, there's Glenne. While lazy and seemingly unambitious, Glenne is constantly underestimated. She's a bit sluggish, but no less a threat than any other member of the gang. She wears the frog's mask to make people uncomfortable, as she likes to put people on edge.

Great game, one of the best out there. I really enjoyed it.

I have used the diplomacy way for the whole game, then attack the enemy camp is the only way to progress. This makes little sense to me.

Bye
As far as those guerrilla dialog choices go, popping up mid-click when you're least prepared for them, even having a short .5 second Wait or an interstitial line of dialog in the middle of the screen or a "Proceed Y/N?" directly afterward would solve the problem. The issue is that the dialog boxes accept the enter keystroke that would normally be used to scroll the text quicker, and that leads to a lot of terrible, irrevocable decision-making.

Which is why Conrad is now living with me.

And why he is definitely going to sacrifice my wife to Satan.

This game is so incredible I am SHOCKED that it does not have more attention. I haven't finished it yet but the game continues to surprise me over and over again. The characters are so complex and incredible, and I feel like the game has SO much replay value, for making choices I didn't make this time around in partners, strategies, and who lives and dies... The many mechanics are so fun and incredible, I was always interested, always having fun. And the dialogue! There's so much! So much to learn about so many wonderful characters. Karen is probably one of my favorite characters of all time from anything. She is just so lovely. Thank you so much for making this game! I love it so much! Please keep doing what you're doing, I am SO excited to see what you come up with next!!

Thank you so much for your comment, it was a christmas present I wasn't expecting. I'm always glad to hear it when people are enjoying the game, and I'm glad to say, there are several projects in the works. "Crackerjack", our next project, takes it to a whole new level. And when it comes to Coats, well... Karen is my favorite too ;)

I've never been very active within the Maker community, so I guess that could explain why this game hasn't really garnered much attention. Also, it's not really a "standard" RPG, as I pretty much scrapped most of the base mechanics and made my own.

Hope you enjoy the game, and stick by it to the end. 'Cause there is an end, and I promise - no cliffhangers or episodic content. That stuff's just mean!

I'm only in Phase 2 and this has been a weird, mesmerizing thing to play. The pacing and tone and sophistication of the game changes from hour to hour, but I'm totally hooked.

Thank you very much for putting your time and energy into making this.

I'll be putting up a full review when I can, but in the meantime I wish there was a little bit more of a wait before choice options come up in dialog. I read faster than the dialog scrolls, so I click enter on every box. When a box comes up with a choice at the end of it, I inevitably end up selecting the first one and then having to reload from save to see what the others even were.

I hope you're enjoying it this far! There's a lot of love put in this game, and I hope it lives up to expectation. Thank you for playing, it makes my day to hear of people immersed in my game, makes me happy to know.

Looking forward to a full review, it's always inspiring to hear of people's impressions. I have a similar issue with the text and dialogue scrolling, but I'm not sure how to change those settings in the engine. I have many qualities, but looking into the detailed scripts of the engine ain't one of them, sadly.

Very interesting game, im now in Phase Two and looking good D:
The only thing i didnt like is that i cant romance Cassey, the woman with glasses that bring the tapes about the skins (I love womans with glasses) D:
You can romance her. It's just more difficult. If you talk to her a lot during phase one, choose to romance no one during the first phase, and become good friends with her during phase two, you can romance her.
What, you thought the ones in phase one were the only options? Come on!
... I love you dood! I will replay again only for her D: I didnt romance any of the girls because well... none was interesting enough D:
Thanks again for the tip D:
Just pay attention to the way you talk to her in Phase Two. There is a secret "interest" value depending on how well your answers match her opinions, and if that value isn't high enough, you can't romance her. So don't be afraid to save before talking to her.

Where on earth is this research terminal where you input data for compilation? I'm pretty sure I've clicked on everything there is to click on and come up blank.

It's in your main office, either to the right or left of the main terminal (can't remember exactly, but is' on one of those sides)

Hi, this is my first time posting for a game... i mean... ever, so it is sure as hell that I enjoyed COATS. man, this is so groundbreaking (well not the graphical aspects) but the story and character development? it is really good. I can tell because I've been studying screenwriting for some time now. my only regret is the fact that you and only the artist worked in this. but what are the possibilities if you have a team of your own? you should try to collaborate on someone who shares your interest. because it would really be good to see that a game like this should be funded. sorry for the mess, I just registered in the site just to give a comment on this.

Hope you don't give up on making games like this.

Thank you so much for your comment, I really appreciate it. Glad you enjoyed the game, it was made with a lot of love. I'm using COATS as a way to boost my resumé while looking for further jobs in the game industry, and while that day might never come, I'll still work on other projects. Our next project, "Crackerjack", is in development as of this summer, so that's always something to look forward to.

And yeah, I can do this with no budget. If I had a team and an actual budget... man, that'd be awesome. Thanks for commenting, and have a good day :)
