A short game created for the "A Golden Week of RPG Maker 2003" event!

Starcrossed

Starcrossed is the quaint journey of a man attempting to restore something lost...

Contest Restrictions

-Complete a game using the RPG Maker 2003 (RM2k3) engine, but...
-Only use assets from the RM2k3 RTP (Run-time Package: engine-default graphics, music, etc.); While mix 'n matching sprites for tilesets, etc. is okay, NO custom edits may be allowed!

Self-restrictions
to help complete the game in time for one thing!

-No battles via a full combat system (e.g. RM2k3's default battle system)
-No text/spoken dialogue (i.e. use of the RM2k3 message window event command): this is a big one and will greatly affect how I construct the game! So instead...

Emphasis of Design

-Map creation and eventing
-Use of music, sounds, and animations to create atmosphere and character interactions
-Map navigation
-Item-based puzzles

In addition to the restrictions set forth by the Golden Week event, Starcrossed will include zero traditional dialogue through the use of message windows. However, very sparse flavor text of items will shed some light on the details of the plot and narrative while others will provide clues to move forward. The game's story, as well as its nifty puzzle mechanics, will reveal itself organically through other means such as sound and animations. Speaking of which, in addition to a color-themed puzzle mechanic that will be more recurring, there will be several instances of item-based puzzle-solving reminiscent of classic adventure titles. There will also be very light RPG elements, mostly in the form of having HP (Health Points) and MP (Mind Points) stats and gaining experience points (XP) to level up, which slightly raises those stats.

No Submission for the Event

Unfortunately, I won't be able to submit something in time for the game jam. I thought I would be able to get more done throughout this week, but because of work and holidays, the bulk of the actual game implementation came down to 1.5 weekends. However, time throughout the week was spent planning many of the details of the game, so I now have a detailed outline of where to go from here in order to finish this in a reasonable time.

Also, because of the planning stages and how I proceeded to implement the game (more of a tandem approach as I was looking at the game as a whole), I didn't prep myself for a better situation to cut more stuff out of the game for a submission that would still be playable and still make sense by the end.

Despite the shortcomings for the contest, I am very glad I participated, and it has given me motivation to continue with all of my current projects.

Look forward to Starcrossed at a later date! I am currently looking at finishing it in its entirety within the next couple of weeks (by the end of May at the latest).
