Sacred Reviews: Cry RPG

Introduction

Cry RPG was created by jordan787 and is probably one of the more interesting fan games on this site. Unlike most fan games which are based on a rather famous intellectual properties like My Little Pony or Bleach, Cry RPG is fan game based on another RPG Maker project. I suppose there are other RPG Maker projects like this out there, but this aspect of the game is what drew me to play it.

Story

Cry RPG features a rather simple story that almost feels overdone in the world of gaming. That story being that you play as a hero that needs to go on an epic quest to save a damsel in distress. Sadly, the game doesn't have enough scenes to really develop the main character or the princess in my opinion so the overly cliche nature of this setup makes for a rather boring story in my opinion.

In fact, the highlight of the narrative might be the fact that you get to name the princess. A fact that is only interesting since I'd imagine most people would give the princess a name that might come across as humorous line reads in later scenes. Though, my personal vote is that many people would name the princess in the same vein as they would name their rival in the early Pokemon games. Regardless it's a sad state of affairs when the best thing about this game is that you get to name the damsel.

Gameplay

Cry RPG makes use of an active-time battle system, but bungles the system rather badly in my opinion. In my experience the player character is so much faster than the enemies that you'll easily be able to wipe out most enemies before they more than one or two hits in. In fact, in some of the later fights I found that my opponent's were so slow that they couldn't even touch me. As you can imagine this makes for rather boring encounters, and considering almost 90 percent of this game is combat you'll quickly find yourself bored to tears.

On a side note the game also seems to contain an entirely useless skill in the form of Revive 3. This skill allows Cry to revive an ally with full health, which is rather odd skill to have considering you don't have any teammates in this game.

Graphics & Sound

In terms of visuals and sound the game is rather average in my opinion. While the game does appear to contain some original artwork the bulk of the material appears to be lifted from the RTP. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but in a game that is already plagued by boring combat and a rather uninspired story a world that is visually stimulating and pleasing to the ears would have been much appreciated.

Conclusion

Cry RPG probably isn't a bad attempt at a first game, but the underlying weakness in terms of creative storytelling and combat mechanics makes this a short game that feels far longer than it is. If your looking for an extremely easy game that doesn't break new ground then this game will fit right up your alley. If your looking for a challenge though this game is best avoided.
