Latest Patch: 1.69. If you have an earlier version, please download the latest patch as soon as possible.

The download has been updated to version 1.69. It includes all fixes up to this point. There is no need to re-download if you have patched in the fixes separately.

You know that game many aspiring devs create? The one starring their friends, often times based on a chat room, or some forums, or a MMO... or perhaps a fangame that barely resembles its source material. The one that gets maybe a half hour of gameplay finished and is completely unintelligible to anyone except that group of friends. Yeah, that one. Now, what if someone actually saw that project all the way through, and attempted to actually make it a fun, accessible, and playable game that was faithful to its source material?

Enter Legend of Balance. This game originally started out as a fun little project for friends, starring characters from Final Fantasy XIV. Over time, and with a ton of effort, it changed into a complete game of its own. It still stars our characters, and there are still a few injokes, but the plot has been set up as such that any Final Fantasy fan can get into the game and enjoy it as a light hearted Final Fantasy romp. Players of FFXIV will find quite a bit to enjoy as well. The story of the game takes place inbetween the end of FFXIV 1.0 and the start of A Realm Reborn(if you haven't played FFXIV, this part probably doesn't matter, and the game can be standalone).

The game revolves around a group of heroes, champions of the realm of Eorzea. In the midst of an intense battle to decide the fate of Eorzea, the heroes are transported away before facing certain death at the hands of Bahamut. Finding themselves separated in a brand new world, the heroes begin a journey to reunite and find a way home. However what starts off as a simple quest quickly unfolds into a classic journey of crystals, great evil, and steadfast allies. Before this adventure ends, they will discover the truth behind this strange new world, and uncover the binds that tie it to their own home and beyond.

-30 to 40 hours of gameplay, including a multitude of sidequests.

-Enjoy a faithfully recreated Final Fantasy battle system. Everything is as you remember it from the classics!

-Utilize classic abilities, including commands such as Jump, Runic, Blitz, Mime, Throw, Mix, Blue Magic, Dualcast, and much more, along with new commands and abilities based on other games in the series, such as Draw Out from Tactics.

-Equip Magicites to gain access to powerful summons and customize your stat growth.

-A huge cast of unique playable characters, including several hidden ones.

-Find and use faithfully recreated equipment. Favorites like the Ultima Weapon, Illumina, Brave Blade/Chicken Knife, Offering, and much, much more is all here to find and use to become unstoppable!

-Dozens of sidequests ensure there's plenty to do, with no need for excess grinding.

-Face off against familiar foes and brand new ones, including a nostalgia filled bonus dungeon for those who complete the main story.

-Facing a foe that your current party can't handle? Switch party members anytime, even in the middle of a fight!

-Buy rare and unique items at the Auction House, and battle in the Colosseum!

-Take part in minigames, including fishing and an arcade-style airship shooter.

-Customizable Battle Speed, Battle Mode, and Difficulty will get you the experience you want, be it tough as nails or a more relaxed game.

Playing the game at higher resolution

Hey all! I just wanted to post a link to an upscaler that will let you play pretty much any rpgmaker game at a much higher resolution.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/magpie.mirror/

Download this and follow the instructions, open Magpie, then the game, then press alt+F11. I'd suggest using either the Anime4k or CRT upscalers for LoB. This will let you play the game in fullscreen and it will look really nice!

That's weird, no one else has had a crash in a very long time. Was it just a random RGSS3 player has stopped, or was there an error? I'm glad you got through it, but if it happens again or with any regularity please don't hesitate to let me know and I will do my best to stop it.

To everyone else, the Mix Fix I posted earlier has been updated. The fix before was not working with save files, now it should be just fine. Also, Patch 1.35 was missing some files from the older patches. That has been fixed as well. Thanks for the patience, I am hoping these nearly daily patches will not be needed soon as we fix up everything you guys find.
Not likely to get new content (maybe) but...
Since there's time travel in the game, have you considered an enemy (regular one/boss/superboss/whatever) to fight differently between the two times? Like in the past it could be a fearsome opponent, but in the present due to the lack of proper conflict (it could be some kind of war machine and genetically created monster by Squeenix to combat Tanaka) it would weaken over time and be easier to defeat?

And just for fun because I'm a big Tales of trash and you already have a miniscule Tales of content in the game... MYSTIC ARTES!
Karina – Divine Conqueror (Asbel Lhant, Tales of Graces f)
Elysia – Crisis Rain (Raven, Tales of Vesperia (PS3))
Ashiee – Infernal Ruin (Presea Combatir, Tales of Symphonia (PS2))
Cassie – Sacred Light (Raine Sage, Tales of Symphonia (PS2))
Level 99 – Myriad Circular (Rose, Tales of Zestiria)
Marz – Absolute Domination (Gaius, Tales of Xillia)
Aeth – no idea what to give him
Dag – Majestic Gate (Richard, Tales of Graces f)
Doiden – no idea what to give him
Gradd – no idea what to give him
Fievel – Final Fury (Jude Mathis, Tales of Xillia)
Orophin – Radiant Dragon Fang (Flynn Scifo, Tales of Vesperia)
Miko – Event Horizon (Muzét, Tales of Xillia)
Abelia – Elemental Mastery (Milla Maxwell, Tales of Xillia)
Kaayu – Trillion Drive (Cheria Barnes, Tales of Graces f)
Azran – Koujin Soutenshou (Alisha, Tales of Zestiria)
Divinus – Time Stop (Mint Adenade, Tales of Phantasia)
Flame – no idea what to give her
Well, I'm not opposed to adding things like new bosses or extensions to the bonus dungeon if the game starts getting really popular, since those can be pretty easily patched in so anyone can try them out. That said I don't know where I could really go past the current bonus dungeon rewards...

I love Tales games, and in fact with how the FF series is going, Tales is probably one of my favorite series overall, in a tie with Dragon Quest. I'd love to do a Tales fangame, and now that Moghunter has put out an actual functional LMBS, I have been very tempted. That said, I don't think nearly as many people would play it as a FF Fangame, and it'd probably be a lot harder to do properly (though honestly once LMBS was set up battles would probably be easier to make since Tales bosses have pretty simple AI, the challenge is in the action element). Anyway, interesting list! I can't say I've ever thought of anything like that, haha.

I'll play along a bit.
Aeth - Shining Bind (Kratos, Symphonia)
Gradd - Rending Saber (Asch, Abyss)
Doiden - I'd say give him Majestic Gate, Dag could have Spiral Ascension or Burning Phoenix.
Flame - idk either, maybe something goofy like No Items Ever!

Not that I'd actually do this, haha. Just filling in your little list.
I'd play a Tales of fangame! While I knew about the series for a while and started to get into it properly since like last April I like this series a lot since character interactions and development is really deep IMO, maybe even more than in your average FF game.

And are others' mystic artes anything remotely appropiate?
I was considering giving Absolute Domination to Gradd.
I initially assigned Elemental Mastery to Dag because swords and elemental magic and Abelia seemed more appropiate choice.
For Kaayu I initially gave her Myriad Circular, but gave it to Level and decided to give her Cheria's mystic arte.
Spiral Ascension seems like a good choice for Dag IMO.
Majestic Gate for Doiden? I didn't even entertain that thought. It's kinda hard to find him something appropiate since he's a Blue Mage and there's no such thing in that series as far as I know.
"No Items Ever!"? Weird choice considering that enemies can't use items. Maybe since she's a Mime, like Bartz is in Dissidias, maybe she could use "mixed up" mystic artes like Bartz can fuse two different moves into one? Like she could "meld" Karina's Divine Conqueror and Orophin's Radiant Dragon Fang into Divine Dragon (Fang)? Or Dag/Doiden's Majestic Gate and Abelia's Elemental Mastery into Elemental Gate?
In the Auction house im trying to bid on Mysterious stone
carbuncle
but around 18K the auctioneer stops taking bids and says its all for today and i cant bid.
Little strange.
Is it a must to buy everything before it s coming new things there?
@kenlan: Nah you don't have to buy everything else... I think if the increment goes up slow enough sometimes the auction will just end. The script I am using for the AH is pretty finicky and I had to edit it a bit. You might just need to bid in larger increments. Or does he just end it immediately at 18k regardless?

@Noel: Yeah, the bread and butter of Tales games is character development. Especially with the skit system, the characters are given a lot more love than in just about any other series.

I didn't really give the artes lot of thought, but the ones you picked look fine to me. You're not going to be able to match up roles from 2 completely different series anyway, haha.
Around 18 K he just stops, doesnt matter if i bid 10 times or 18K direct.
The Kraken club
is there now and i can only make one bid then he stops the auction, but when i tried again i bid around 8K direct and get the club(interesting weapon,a must try ).
If you bid more than 18k does it keep going? I'm not sure what it's doing, the auction appears to be set up properly. :/

The Kraken Club can actually be gotten for 1 gil. It's something of a gag item, but it does have some interesting use in battle.
I dont have so much money left right now,but i´m pretty sure i tried to bid around 25 and everytime I or another comes up around 18 it stops.Im gonna go back there later and see if its going better.1 gil,ok and i gave 8000 hahaha .
Hmm, looking again at the auction, you should be able to win the stone for 15k. If you are bidding up to and above 18k, something isn't right. I'm not sure what just yet though, as no one else has had a problem purchasing it. Let me know if the problem is still there when you try again. Sorry for the trouble!
I just completed the game and totally forgot how heart-tearing the ending is ;_;
Is Cass alright? I need a sequel, even a short story, because I feel for her there.

And dayum that awesome castle interior in the final dungeon! It was awesome! I don't remember the area being so great-looking in the original release, but it's so awesome!
Props for that unique battle theme during the boss battle during Aeth's character sidequest: makes me feel blood in my veins! Where did you get such an awesome piece?

And just a few words about characters I really liked:
  • Karina – Not including the main heroine in the list would be a sin, wouldn't be? She felt the most developed of the gang of playable character, complete with "a traumatizing event in the past which helped her define her present self". Really nice character and a real killer in battle.
  • Elysia – Probably my favourite fav. ;P I loved her "RPG-Know-It-All" wisdom thing going around her. Plus, she was quite upbeat and her "attitude" was quite infectious. And she's also pretty good in battle: party-target buffing songs and quite descent bow skills made her a really good choice in battle.
  • Cassie – I was quite intrigued by her relationship with Karina, although it wasn't much elaborated upon, although I must admit when Karina said that Cass is her "gal pal" I completely lost it! ;P That was hilarious! Like a regular White Mage, she was used to buff and heal party.
  • Ashiee – Poor Ash, bullied by Galka... But she grew strong. And building a town, that's something. What's the deal with her and Level? They appear together rather often during in flashbacks. Didn't use her much in battle so I can't really say anything interesting.
  • Level 99 – He's got confidence, that much is certain. And then there's this Ash thing I mentioned above. When I got him I kind of abused Dancing Edge cause it was a really good move and brought him to few boss battles to steal things, but nothing more interesting.
  • Fievel – I can't say much about him story-wise, there wasn't anything particular where he shone aside of few references to Final Fantasy IV. And I used him quite a lot in battle mainly due to quite effecting crowd control Blitzes.
    [li
]Azran – The greatest mystery is how he turned from a humanoid chocobo to a blue human: must be Miko's new potion. ;P After he got Power Surge he was quite useful in battles with strong enemies since Jump could do quite descent damage, although this damage cap is not nice. ;P

Other characters weren't of particular interest to me; it was actually a bit overwhelming number and some characters didn't have much "feel" to them.
Of particular mention are playable male Tarufell: I loved their variations for various words with the inclusion of "taru", like "honestaru" or ever better "brotaru". These gave me a really good laugh.
@Noel
XD I'm glad you like the castle interior. I redid it, it's not the best but it was better then before!

Spoilers inside

A few things:
If you do enough of the sidequests and inn scenes, you will trigger an alternate (good) ending that will give Cassie a different fate.

You can interpret the relationship between Ashiee and Level however you would like, as friends, together, or whatever you want really. We didn't want to outright say anything, but it is implied there is a close relationship between the two. In the game Level was originally in Ashiee's old mercenary group, and he follows her after she ends up leaving. That is why you see him in all of her flashbacks, she has known him for a very long time.

If you watch all 3 Ashiee dream flashbacks (4 including Casiale's account)+ Ashiee's sidequest it will tell a short story, but you have to really piece everything together to get the full thing.... we were kinda going for the whole Shadow dreams thing with that XD.

As far as Azran >_> that's supposed to be a chocobo mask. It's an item you originally got in 1.0 if you did a bunch of chocobo escort missions. It was a super pain in the ass to get but Azran of course got one, and he wore it around everywhere.
Ah! Excellent work on that remap. And other remaps as well! They all look swell as hell.

I'll be sure to do more sidequests and inn scenes. I think I got most of inn scenes anyway and I have still a few sidequests to do (only character ones count towards the good ending, yes?).

Oh, so that's the reason. You did pretty nice making their relationship free to interpretation. And Ashiee's sidequest... that's a real pain in the ass and I need to find one more character to "level" up the town? (See what I did there? I'm also a master at making bad jokes. ;P )

So Azran likes a challenge then? ;P But geez, that explains perfectly how he turned from a chocobo to a Galka; thanks for clarification.

Also, I see you "stole" an idea from Tales of series: an EX dungeon. (It's not like it's a bad idea, actually I'm really happy about it!) I need to level up a bit because that first boss kicks ass and my characters have an average level of 60. Well, bonus dungeon bosses aren't supposed to be easy, right? ;)

Also, at which points the Dark Ixion may pop up on the world map? I have a problem locating it.
No love for poor Oro :(

But yeah, I'm kind of a serious person so I can see how my character isn't very appealing. :P

As far as the "inn" scenes, I don't remember exactly if all the Cassie ones are specifically in inns, but there are other places you can rest around the world that'll trigger scenes as well. (like the cabin where Doiden does his sidequest) I never actually saw the bad ending but I'll admit I had some insight from the devs on things so I tried to play as complete a game as I can.

Speaking of which..Dark Ixion? Was that one of the hunt quests at the lodge? Because if not I don't remember running into this one.

If you can point out Eden's clue on the remaining town member you're missing I could probably help out with that. Ashiee's side dungeon is interesting as in you can only use a specific party setup.
Haha thank you with the comments about the remaps :D Some of them had to be done out of necessity ... since you got the chance to play the game in its original glory, you got to see what was once hot-mess fence town Memoria. No offense to Gradd since I believe it was his first time mapping anything, but a lot of those maps/houses were really really bad. I went in and edited the crap out of a lot of those maps to make them not look like a total mess but keep their original essence at the same time. I tried to keep some of Gradd's ideas in tact but they kinda disappeared over time. I think I kept one of Gradd's house outsides in tact... I wanted to keep the interiors in tact as well but I ended up remodeling all of them in the last hours of development, at least in that town.

just do all of the character sidequests, it doesn't need to be every sidequest in the entire game.

Ashiee's sidequest is definitely the most involved out of all of them, If you are missing any towns people, just talk Eden/Galka in Ashiee's town for more information on where to find them.

And yeah, the Bonus dungeon is meant to kick your ass, its not supposed to be easy.

Dark Ixion... there's 4 potential places that it pops, I will probably go ahead and place it in our FAQ's section.

Don't be sad, Oro, you're nice, just... don't have a story tied strong with the main plot so you're kind of... not so popular as you hope to be. If it'll mean anything, I like you waaay more than Cecil; he's one of many reason I can't really dig into the story of Final Fantasy IV, although the story itself is nothing really interesting for me.

Yes, Dark Ixion is a hunt from Hunter's Lodge. And speaking of hunts... It'd be cool if they had their own battle theme instead of the old, regular boss theme. I'm sure some in-game track would suit hunts good enough.

And the one I'm missing is regarding "a good friend of Ashiee might be in a small village" or something like that.
@Noel

Go to Koen, She's right next to the elder's house
@Noel: Grats on finishing the game! I am glad that you liked a lot of the characters. Unfortunately, as you said there were so many that it was hard to really integrate a lot of them into the main story itself, which is why I gave everyone a character sidequest that gives them a little bit of focus. I also added the inn scenes, if you haven't seen all of those they expand on several characters quite a bit. Spoilers below!

As for Cass, as Ash said, if you do all of the character sidequests and see 3 specific inn scenes, something different will happen during the ending. Give it a try, I think you may like it!
A new patch has been put up that addresses several issues. The main download has been updated as well to include it. As usual, the patch will update any previous version, so you do not need to re-download the game. Thanks all, and I hope everyone is continuing to enjoy the game!
I liked Oro (but I also really like paladins) I am loving the game thus far (am a huge sucker for huge parties)
