Latest Patch: 1.69. If you have an earlier version, please download the latest patch as soon as possible.

The download has been updated to version 1.69. It includes all fixes up to this point. There is no need to re-download if you have patched in the fixes separately.

You know that game many aspiring devs create? The one starring their friends, often times based on a chat room, or some forums, or a MMO... or perhaps a fangame that barely resembles its source material. The one that gets maybe a half hour of gameplay finished and is completely unintelligible to anyone except that group of friends. Yeah, that one. Now, what if someone actually saw that project all the way through, and attempted to actually make it a fun, accessible, and playable game that was faithful to its source material?

Enter Legend of Balance. This game originally started out as a fun little project for friends, starring characters from Final Fantasy XIV. Over time, and with a ton of effort, it changed into a complete game of its own. It still stars our characters, and there are still a few injokes, but the plot has been set up as such that any Final Fantasy fan can get into the game and enjoy it as a light hearted Final Fantasy romp. Players of FFXIV will find quite a bit to enjoy as well. The story of the game takes place inbetween the end of FFXIV 1.0 and the start of A Realm Reborn(if you haven't played FFXIV, this part probably doesn't matter, and the game can be standalone).

The game revolves around a group of heroes, champions of the realm of Eorzea. In the midst of an intense battle to decide the fate of Eorzea, the heroes are transported away before facing certain death at the hands of Bahamut. Finding themselves separated in a brand new world, the heroes begin a journey to reunite and find a way home. However what starts off as a simple quest quickly unfolds into a classic journey of crystals, great evil, and steadfast allies. Before this adventure ends, they will discover the truth behind this strange new world, and uncover the binds that tie it to their own home and beyond.

-30 to 40 hours of gameplay, including a multitude of sidequests.

-Enjoy a faithfully recreated Final Fantasy battle system. Everything is as you remember it from the classics!

-Utilize classic abilities, including commands such as Jump, Runic, Blitz, Mime, Throw, Mix, Blue Magic, Dualcast, and much more, along with new commands and abilities based on other games in the series, such as Draw Out from Tactics.

-Equip Magicites to gain access to powerful summons and customize your stat growth.

-A huge cast of unique playable characters, including several hidden ones.

-Find and use faithfully recreated equipment. Favorites like the Ultima Weapon, Illumina, Brave Blade/Chicken Knife, Offering, and much, much more is all here to find and use to become unstoppable!

-Dozens of sidequests ensure there's plenty to do, with no need for excess grinding.

-Face off against familiar foes and brand new ones, including a nostalgia filled bonus dungeon for those who complete the main story.

-Facing a foe that your current party can't handle? Switch party members anytime, even in the middle of a fight!

-Buy rare and unique items at the Auction House, and battle in the Colosseum!

-Take part in minigames, including fishing and an arcade-style airship shooter.

-Customizable Battle Speed, Battle Mode, and Difficulty will get you the experience you want, be it tough as nails or a more relaxed game.

Playing the game at higher resolution

Hey all! I just wanted to post a link to an upscaler that will let you play pretty much any rpgmaker game at a much higher resolution.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/magpie.mirror/

Download this and follow the instructions, open Magpie, then the game, then press alt+F11. I'd suggest using either the Anime4k or CRT upscalers for LoB. This will let you play the game in fullscreen and it will look really nice!

Hi Ashiee and Rydia I had version 1.69 and the patch since I started playing the game so definitely had the most recent version when I first entered so not sure what's up with that. I just tried updating it to the newest version that you just upload but it still doesn't seem to be working. Thank you guys for your assistance with this and helping get this working again looking forward to continuing the game.

@rydia how do I send over my save state can I send it through here or can I email it? I did add it to my locker is that the correct way to do so? I don't see anything on the message options to upload a file although I may be missing something glaringly obvious. I'd be happy to shoot it on over and get it working so I could continue with the game and than never go in that Inn again lol.

Shot you a PM with my email. I believe Rydia will be out for a few hours, so if you want the game working nowish you can feel free to email your save and I can try and get it working.
@garitharwen: I have sent you a PM with your fixed save file. For everyone else, the problem has been fixed and patch 1.69 has been reuploaded, it was an issue of forgetting to put in a fixed version of the Mielo Inn map. Sorry for everyone who ran into this!
@Rydia & @Ashiee thank you both for all of your help. It's up and running not only a great game but thank you both for being so helpful! Time to continue onwards!
script input exline error. it wont launch.
Is Fenrir actually an Eidolon. I didn't get him when I beat the boss?
@RLguitarhero You probably need to update your DirectX. You can do so here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=35

@garitharwen he's not summonable in the current version, but due to popular demand he will be in the next update! There will of course be a way to go back and get him for people past that point.
Hi! I've been trying to get the game going, but no matter what link I use, I can download it, but get a runtime error. It says, "Script "InputEX' line 703:RuntimeError occurred. LoadLibrary: xinput1_3

Thanks!
That error usually means you need to update your DirectX. You can do so here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=34429
I registered for this website just because of this game and to tell you how much I am enjoying it! I've been playing it on and off for the past few days whenever I get a chance. You have done such a great job on this game, I was blown away with how well put together it is. I've already recommended it to a few friends that are final fantasy fans. I will write a review after I'm done my first run though.

Not sure how far into the game I am, just on my way to recover a crystal from a certain someone (sorry not sure how to do spoiler tags). I did have a couple questions that you might be able to help with.

One of the characters has healing spells that also provide a damage absorb effect (as is my understanding of the description), is there a buff that is supposed to appear to display that effect? and if so is it a 1:1 ratio healing to absorb? Do critical effects work with the absorb?

Is there a way to cycle though all your characters status screen without having to switch out your party each time? I know in shops under the equip screen you can go though your entire roster even if they aren't in your direct party, is that possible outside of shops?

I think that is all the questions for now, I'm sure I'll think of more when I get to play again, and once again thank you for this game, I just love it ^_^

Thanks for the kind words! I am glad you're enjoying the game so far. =)

Hmm, what specific ability are you referring to? There's several abilities and also weapons that absorb HP. There should be an icon for the effect if it's not a weapon, and also when you hit enemies the amount healed should appear on your character like a healing spell when you attack. Most absorb abilities are not 1:1, but they are affected by critical hits.

Unfortunately, you'll need to swap your party around outside of shops. An early version of the game allowed this, but because of it, it also allowed multitarget healing spells and items to target the entire roster of characters, which was obviously extremely broken. :/

Feel free to ask any other questions. Thanks for playing!
Thanks so much for the quick reply. I probably should have worded the question better, the Scholar healing spells say they "restore HP and create a damage shield". Are they directly analogous to their FFXIV versions, providing a 1:1 ratio damage shield. I've used the spells and didn't notice the damage shield effect but I was specifically looks for a buff afterwords and may not have noticed incoming damage being absorbed. I actually didn't notice if healing spells in Legend of Balance can crit so that probably answers that question.
Oh, I misread the question, sorry!

The shield isn't 1:1, it is 2:1. It used to be 1:1, but in testing we determined that it really wasn't useful like that because it left Miko unable to heal big hits effectively. Unfortunately there isn't an icon for the effect because it's not technically a status, but I will definitely see if I can add one. I thought I had, actually, sorry about that. As it is you'll just notice reduced or nullified damage.

Unfortunately heals do not crit, which is probably a little disappointing if you wanted double shield crit adlos like XIV. Again it's a balance thing with ATB based combat. ;;

Thank you! I'll try that when I get home!
Yeah it makes sense that a lot of XIV abilities don't exactly translate well over to a 16bit era game. Now that you mentioned the 2:1 ratio for Scholar spells I play tested it and I am seeing reduced or nullified damage after a cast. I thought of a few more questions to as as well.

Are stat gains at level up predetermined or is there some RNG to it?

Does stealing have a base % chance to succeed, is it based on your level? speed?

I just received my airship and I'm travelling the world looking for side quests and I noticed many enemies don't have items to steal, it seemed more worth while earlier in the game, is it just the enemies I'm fighting (mostly world map encounters), or is stealing more important for bosses the farther you get into the game?
Yeah, I just tried to adapt them as best I could while keeping them balanced.

Stat gains are predetermined, only Magicites and the Plus items will change stat growth.

Stealing has a base chance to succeed, with the Master Thief ability having a higher chance, and a few pieces of equipment increasing the chance.

Some enemies don't have steals, but it shouldn't be a huge number. If there's a lot it was probably an oversight on my part, some encounters I made later on I may have forgotten to give steals to. Bosses will almost always have a steal of some sort, though.

all I get is an error.

Could you elaborate on this error please?
Question: I was going about and doing some sidequests and things I missed like certain blue magic spells directly after getting the ship, and it just randomly locked my movement and forced me to perpetually go up (I can only move left or right, not down because of this). Is there a way to fix this?
That sounds like a very strange bug and I don't think there's anything in the game itself that could cause something like that. Are you using a gamepad or the keyboard? Have you tried restarting the game?
