Latest Patch: 1.69. If you have an earlier version, please download the latest patch as soon as possible.

The download has been updated to version 1.69. It includes all fixes up to this point. There is no need to re-download if you have patched in the fixes separately.

You know that game many aspiring devs create? The one starring their friends, often times based on a chat room, or some forums, or a MMO... or perhaps a fangame that barely resembles its source material. The one that gets maybe a half hour of gameplay finished and is completely unintelligible to anyone except that group of friends. Yeah, that one. Now, what if someone actually saw that project all the way through, and attempted to actually make it a fun, accessible, and playable game that was faithful to its source material?

Enter Legend of Balance. This game originally started out as a fun little project for friends, starring characters from Final Fantasy XIV. Over time, and with a ton of effort, it changed into a complete game of its own. It still stars our characters, and there are still a few injokes, but the plot has been set up as such that any Final Fantasy fan can get into the game and enjoy it as a light hearted Final Fantasy romp. Players of FFXIV will find quite a bit to enjoy as well. The story of the game takes place inbetween the end of FFXIV 1.0 and the start of A Realm Reborn(if you haven't played FFXIV, this part probably doesn't matter, and the game can be standalone).

The game revolves around a group of heroes, champions of the realm of Eorzea. In the midst of an intense battle to decide the fate of Eorzea, the heroes are transported away before facing certain death at the hands of Bahamut. Finding themselves separated in a brand new world, the heroes begin a journey to reunite and find a way home. However what starts off as a simple quest quickly unfolds into a classic journey of crystals, great evil, and steadfast allies. Before this adventure ends, they will discover the truth behind this strange new world, and uncover the binds that tie it to their own home and beyond.

-30 to 40 hours of gameplay, including a multitude of sidequests.

-Enjoy a faithfully recreated Final Fantasy battle system. Everything is as you remember it from the classics!

-Utilize classic abilities, including commands such as Jump, Runic, Blitz, Mime, Throw, Mix, Blue Magic, Dualcast, and much more, along with new commands and abilities based on other games in the series, such as Draw Out from Tactics.

-Equip Magicites to gain access to powerful summons and customize your stat growth.

-A huge cast of unique playable characters, including several hidden ones.

-Find and use faithfully recreated equipment. Favorites like the Ultima Weapon, Illumina, Brave Blade/Chicken Knife, Offering, and much, much more is all here to find and use to become unstoppable!

-Dozens of sidequests ensure there's plenty to do, with no need for excess grinding.

-Face off against familiar foes and brand new ones, including a nostalgia filled bonus dungeon for those who complete the main story.

-Facing a foe that your current party can't handle? Switch party members anytime, even in the middle of a fight!

-Buy rare and unique items at the Auction House, and battle in the Colosseum!

-Take part in minigames, including fishing and an arcade-style airship shooter.

-Customizable Battle Speed, Battle Mode, and Difficulty will get you the experience you want, be it tough as nails or a more relaxed game.

Playing the game at higher resolution

Hey all! I just wanted to post a link to an upscaler that will let you play pretty much any rpgmaker game at a much higher resolution.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/magpie.mirror/

Download this and follow the instructions, open Magpie, then the game, then press alt+F11. I'd suggest using either the Anime4k or CRT upscalers for LoB. This will let you play the game in fullscreen and it will look really nice!

I managed to fix it by turning auto-dash off. I am using a keyboard, no gamepad.
Wow this game is really amazing. I can only imagine the amount of work that went into it.
Quick question: Did you make the animations for skills/magic? I was just wondering if it was ok to borrow some of them for my own game I'm working on. ^^
Thanks in advance for your reply! ^^

Thank you!

As for the animations, if you are referring to the movement of the characters and such, we did make those action sequences ourselves. If you mean the effect animations, it's a mix of default rpg maker stuff, things found online, and rips of effects from FF games.

Now, while I'd of course rather not just have our animations copy pasted into another game en masse, if there's a few you'd like to use that's fine. Just be sure and credit myself and wotgAshiee, and check the credits file that comes with the game download for other folks you will need to credit for effects/animations.
Thank you for the reply. x3
And I just mean the effect animations, like spells and stuff.
I wouldn't say I'd use -all- of them there's a lot. xD Probably somewhere around -maybe- 20% at the most. I just really like how they looked and how it changed things up from the regular default rpg maker vx spell/skill animations.
Would that be alright you think?
And I will certainly give credit and check that file if all works out. x3
@Knightowl: That's a pretty big chunk of the animations. I'm not really comfortable with you copying that many but not like I can realistically stop you. Just try not to copy too many please. Your game needs to have its own identity too, after all.

@muddi1956: Just hold down the Q and E buttons on the keyboard, or L and R on a controller to run away from battle. Alternately, Level 99's escape skill will work as well.

I know it's been about a week since anyone has posted here but I registered here with the sole purpose of congratulating each and every one of the people here (Rydia and Ashiee I'm looking at you :P) who had a hand in developing and play testing this game because it is a MASTERPIECE!!!

Speaking as someone who has played each and every Final Fantasy game ever created aside from FFXIII-2 - The Return of Lightning, it truly feels like a Squaresoft made title. The music is phenomenal and the graphics and spell animations are fantastic for a 32 bit era style game. I really enjoy the story and the plot humor stuff too. This ranks right up there with FFIV, FFV, FFVI, and Chrono Trigger in my humble opinion, and those are my personal favorites in the FF series along with VII.

There are a few things I would like to bring to your attention about the game Rydia but none of it is game breaking like the bugs other people have experienced with regard to disappearing airships, black screens upon staying at an inn, or game crashes relating to counterattacking while casting a spell. Yes I've read EVERY comment from page 1 to 34 so I am fully aware of the constant struggle you've had in having to dig through the data files over and over to fix things so I will just let you know what I've discovered thus far since starting my first playthrough. (It has New Game+ so I will definitely be playing it for awhile lol)

Ok first of all I noticed that there is no option in the Config menu to run the game in full screen mode, nor is there a binary type toggle setting for it in the ini for the game either. I actually had to search on Google how to force an application to run in full screen since the button for it was greyed out and there isn't a resize arrow when you hover over the sides or corners. By default the game runs in a really small 3 inch by 4 inch window which compared to the size of my widescreen monitor feels like no bigger than a postage stamp LOL. Were it not for Alt+Enter, I would not have been able to play this wonderful game.

The second thing I noticed after switching it to full screen and running around Rosalia to talk to people and dig through everyone's dressers and pots for goodies, the screen tends to stutter periodically. Not really sure what's causing it but I know it isn't lag or a memory leak because the sprites for my characters are running at full speed. Thus far I've just ignored it because the game is so good it really isn't a big deal, but if you guys can fix that it would be even better.

After getting Fievel and Oro in my party I looked at their skills (As I do with each and every new person I acquire) and I noticed in the description for Fievel's Chi Blast it says "Damages one enemy with Ki" Is it Ki or Chi? Pick one and remain consistent. Most games typically use one or the other spelling/translation of the word, but not both.

Also when you get to Aquaria and can buy the Mythril gear, I happened to have a Mythril Buckler in my inventory that I picked up in a chest before I made it to Aquaria, so when I went to go and upgrade my gear I bought the Mythril Shield for all who could wear it and more Bucklers for those who couldn't. However, going into the menu under the Equip screen and hitting Optimize favors the Buckler over the Shield even though the Shield is 1 Physical Defense point higher. I know that the Optimize option tends to favor Magical Defense over Physical but this wasn't the case in this particular instance so I was a bit perplexed by that. Also it has been mentioned before, but the Hermes Buckler and Hermes Shield as Guild Token rewards are both the same price, but the Shield is much better in terms of stat gains and it doesn't follow equipment restrictions with regard to shield usage among party members since just about everyone can wear it, which makes the Buckler useless. I would either lower the price on the Hermes Buckler and limit who can wear the Shield or get rid of the Buckler entirely.

Those were the only things that I found that stood out or seemed unusual about the game thus far, and I know that to some it may seem like I'm nit picking, but I just want this game to achieve pure perfection, so that anyone else who plays it after me won't be able to find anything wrong with it at all. I downloaded and began playing this game yesterday after I got home from work at 6am after a 12 hour shift and I couldn't put it down until 12:30 and only because I needed to sleep. I'm currently about 10 and a half hours in and I'm addicted already lol.

Oh, one more thing:
Am I able to buy the Kingsword later on? Cause I really hated having to give that up to finish that quest. I ended up having to blow about 8k or so on a Flametongue from the Auction House to replace it o.O

PS: I'm glad I bought that Flametongue too since I had to go to a castle full of undead later XD

PSS: The first time that I fought against Kayuu in the mansion in Cecille I got my butt kicked so I grinded a few levels and managed to beat her by having party members who were a bit faster and also hit her with slow to be able to awaken everyone before she used her Dream Eater skill to minimize the damage taken from it. I tried that same strategy on the 2nd fight in the Pyramid and couldn't do so since my whole party was affected on every Sominus Step cast and the damage from Dream Eater was high enough to 1 shot most if not everyone, so I said F*CK YOU Kayuu!! and went back to town and bought 4 Peace Rings. No more falling asleep that time. I made her my b*tch cause she was trying to run away towards the end of the fight lmao

@Pyro2678: First of all, thank you so much for the kind words! I'm really happy to hear you like the game so much to compare it to such great titles!

Sadly, I think you're mistaken about the New Game+ feature, though I have considered adding one just for fun. The game does already save clear data for the bonus dungeon.

As for the screen size, I probably should add a menu option. I had one previously but it was behaving oddly. That said, you can also press F5 to simply double the size of the game window without going into fullscreen mode if you'd rather as well. This button is in the readme but it's really easy to miss, so at the least I should probably have a NPC mention it. I will however look into adding an option in the config menu proper to adjust the size. I'm glad you figured it out though!

The stutter is something I have been fighting since we started making the game. I honestly have no idea what causes it, and many other VX Ace games have the same issue, and no one has been able to find a fix. I've tried everything from rewrites of the entire plane class to every antilag under the sun. You're right in the fact that it is an issue with the map scrolling and not something more serious. I'd absolutely love to fix it, but now that MV is out I doubt that anyone is even going to bother to work on this VX Ace issue anymore. =(

I will fix Fievel's skill description, it was honestly just a mistake because at one point it was Ki. The description just never got changed, haha.

I will look into the issue with the buckler, but my hunch is that it is probably factoring the m.evade of the buckler as well into the optimize equation. Later shields should have enough of a discrepancy between heavy and light shields that optimize should work correctly. As for the shields, that's another error related to item changes. The Hermes Shield is supposed to be a heavy shield but is categorized wrong, and the buckler should give a bonus to caster stats as well as Auto-Haste. I will fix this as well, thanks for bringing it up!

I'm glad you're so hooked on the game! Thanks for bringing up these issues, and don't hesitate to mention anything else you find. =)

The Kingsword is just for that quest, but I will add another in as it is kind of cruel to have to trade it in, even if better stuff is available.

Grats on winning the first Kaayu fight! It is an optional win encounter, and I didn't really expect most people to win it, but it seems like folks prefer to grind a bit and beat her up! As for the second, hmm.. are you playing on Hard difficulty, or are your levels low? If the answer is no to both questions, I might have overdone it a bit on her, haha. But it seems like you figured out the winning strategy anyway!

No I'm playing on Normal, and my levels weren't all that low since after I managed to beat her, it was maybe 10 or so random encounters later during which I managed to gain perhaps a level or two and then the ! symbol started showing up blue which meant that if anything I was above the required level for the area. The problem was that rather than just one or two party members falling asleep whenever Sominus Step would go off like in the first fight, this time around it was my whole party, so I had no possible way to remove the sleep status before she would cast Dream Eater. The damage from Dream Eater was so high that even with the best shield spell Miko has at his disposal which I cast on everyone before the fight even started, I'd STILL get one shotted or have maybe one person left alive but near death. So I was like OK time to make them immune to sleep. Once I equipped those Peace Rings it was a whole different scenario because Dream Eater does very little damage when nobody is sleeping, so then it was just a matter of keeping my buffs up and making sure everyone's HP didn't dip too low and she went down fairly easily

With regard to the Kingsword, yes there are better weapons available in the game later on, but in Aquaria at that point in the game nothing else in the shops could come close, that being said, I did manage to find a Rune Blade in one of the cabinets in the building where the Auction House is located but idk as to which one is better since I had already bought the Flametongue by then so I sold it right away to recoup some of the cost lol. I'd suggest maybe lowering the atk value on it so that it doesn't seem like such a big loss to the player when they have to give it up....just make sure that they aren't able to sell it in the off chance that someone decides to dump it thinking they got ripped off by the guy who sold it to them lol.

Speaking of shops in Aquaria, I noticed that the shops changed their inventory to better gear after I finished the 3 separate scenarios when the party splits after the events in the Pyramid, so much so that the gear in the town being built is now obsolete. Where do I find people to run the Pub and the Inn and such so that my town can become bigger so that the shops start selling better gear?
Hmm, sounds like I need to ease it up a bit for Normal at least. I'm working on an update right now that will ramp up the difficulty on some of the midgame and later bosses on Hard since people were telling me that Hard gets pretty easy later on when boss stats matter a lot less due to all the tricks your party has available. Because of that, Hard will change the AI script and properties of several boss attacks. The way that attack is functioning definitely sounds like a Hard mode mechanic.

I'll probably drop the attack power on the sword or increase the reward on the quest. It should be unsellable as is. Thanks for the feedback!

In the FAQ section there's a list of where to find all of the NPCs for the town. You may need to advance the plot a little more as well if you can't get them all yet. Keeping up with the town is a good idea as it sells some unique things, but more importantly is tied to the quest for Ashiee's character specific weapon, and a great weapon for another character.
That's awesome...keep me posted on when that update is finished so I can patch my game right away please..and sorry for the confusion on new game +...I saw Ashiee posting comments using that vernacular in the FAQs section so I assumed the game had it...all in all it's not a bad idea since you seemed to have incorporated the best features of all the other FF titles including the Ultima weapon fight from FFVI...why not go for broke and include new game + from Chrono Trigger? For some people that might be the only way to be able to take on the bosses in the EX dungeon. Yeah I looked at the list of town NPCs in the FAQs yesterday. I just got my airship so I'm able to track them all down much easier now. I'm having a blast now that I have my full party back. Azran and Orophin are my two heavy hitters along with Elysia and Cassie in the back row for support. I chose them for my party setup for all the buffs that they have available. Using Reis Wind, Rampart, Valor Minuet, and summoning Carbuncle which gives my whole party both shell and protect, regen, and an atk boost all in the first turn, it makes most boss battles much more manageable ^_^

I'm also really digging the in-battle party switching feature too, because I use that alot with Aeth for elemental damage when it's necessary to exploit weaknesses. I normally would use Abelia but I find Aeth to be less squishy and also cheaper on MP since I only need to use his Spellblade ability once and it lasts for the entire fight or until I change the elemental property by selecting a different one
Having played this game for awhile, I think it could be really great. Unfortunately, there's one thing that drives me crazy: the wait function. Would it be possible/feasible to alter the wait function in a way that battle time automatically halts as soon as the ATB bar of one character is full? It's such a hassle to have to go into the skill or item sub menu first in order for battle time to halt, and it really ruins my experience. As soon as reaction time plays even a minor role (even if it is just one click), it's not really a wait function the way I see it. I would be really grateful if you would implement the described wait function change. Call me lethargic or narrow-minded, but I don't want to play your ambitious game as it is right now. That's really a shame, isn't it? Maybe I'm getting too old.

Its actually a Final Fantasy feature. Even if you turned the ATB on "Wait" in the original final fantasy games, they usually still continue to fill up. What happens is that they tend to make a 'waiting queue' and that it stops the ATB from filling when someone else is doing something. The most reliable way to stop the ATB from filling is to enter a separate tab (such as the skill tab or ability tab or item tab) to freeze the ATB and let the animations roll on.

This isn't actually a problem with Lydia+Ashee's game. This is just how FF-series franchise in my experience generally acts like.
Having played 9 of the first 10 Final Fantasy games (with the exception of 8), I'm well aware of that. Developing a Final Fantasy fangame doesn't mean you have to copy all the subpar components. There are mostly two types of players: Those who want nonstop action and those who want a pure turn-based experience without any reaction elements (which is one of the main reasons why the newer Final Fantasy games are less popular, because their battle systems annoy both types of players, especially the turn-based fraction of course). What good is a turn-based battle system for if you can die by doing nothing? If I wanted that, I could play an Action Adventure instead.

All I ask for is an additional wait function as described - let's call it "super wait" or maybe even "pussy wait". As far as I can tell, it shouldn't be a problem (technically) to implement such a wait function as it can be seen in countless other RPG Maker (VX Ace) games. Now I'm asking the developers: Would you be so kind to add such a wait function or should I sadly move on to another game?
Sorry, we will not be adding any type of super wait feature. One of our earlier versions did have the wait feature as an option, however it caused a lot of unexpected issues with our battle system. We ultimately decided that we would not add this feature to our game.
I'm sorry, but what Ashiee said is correct. We did have the option in early builds, but it caused a lot of issues with functions such as turn passing and ATB manipulating spells such as Quick, along with counter attacks and several boss abilities. At worst, some of these abilities would lock up battles completely if they happened at the wrong time. Additionally, it made balancing the game extremely difficult as bosses balanced with the standard ATB in mind would basically just become pinatas with the game set to full wait. It is like minaly22 said, the game is basically designed around the battle system working the way it does, as a reproduction of classic Final Fantasy. Because of that, we can't add this feature. You could try turning the battle speed down if things are moving too quickly for you, but I understand if what you want is a more turn based experience. I'm sorry that this is a game breaker for you, and do appreciate you trying our game out and giving feedback.
Thank you for the detailed explanation. I didn't know about these technical issues and that the whole battle engine has to be built around such a super wait feature (I won't take such a feature for granted from now on). It's completely understandable then that you're aiming for a large audience while keeping technical problems to a minimum. Turning down the battle speed seems to be a good idea, though I hate slow moving battles and would have to compromise anyway. Maybe I give your game another chance as soon as I have run out of games to play (which is always only a matter of time). As narrow-minded as I seem to be: Missing out on a potentially great game always broadens my horizons over time.

Ah, really? :( Well originally the game was really ment to just be privately for me but since I'm so close to finally finishing a somewhat decent game (normally start games and get distracted 5-25% of the way thru xD) I figured I'd try sharing it so others would enjoy it maybe. :P I'll try to tone it down a bit though. ^^ Would you like me to let you know when / if I post it and such so you can see it for yourself?
Prolly won't be for some month(s) though.
Wow!! this is a very nice final-fantasy game!! I love the look of the arts and you captured the FF battle system very neatly!! the summoning was also amazing!! I cannot wait to try it out xDD
@Knightowl: Thanks for understanding. Sure, I'd like to see it when you're done, feel free to PM me a link!

@Starmage: Thank you for the kind words! I hope you enjoy the game! =)
