Latest Patch: 1.69. If you have an earlier version, please download the latest patch as soon as possible.

The download has been updated to version 1.69. It includes all fixes up to this point. There is no need to re-download if you have patched in the fixes separately.

You know that game many aspiring devs create? The one starring their friends, often times based on a chat room, or some forums, or a MMO... or perhaps a fangame that barely resembles its source material. The one that gets maybe a half hour of gameplay finished and is completely unintelligible to anyone except that group of friends. Yeah, that one. Now, what if someone actually saw that project all the way through, and attempted to actually make it a fun, accessible, and playable game that was faithful to its source material?

Enter Legend of Balance. This game originally started out as a fun little project for friends, starring characters from Final Fantasy XIV. Over time, and with a ton of effort, it changed into a complete game of its own. It still stars our characters, and there are still a few injokes, but the plot has been set up as such that any Final Fantasy fan can get into the game and enjoy it as a light hearted Final Fantasy romp. Players of FFXIV will find quite a bit to enjoy as well. The story of the game takes place inbetween the end of FFXIV 1.0 and the start of A Realm Reborn(if you haven't played FFXIV, this part probably doesn't matter, and the game can be standalone).

The game revolves around a group of heroes, champions of the realm of Eorzea. In the midst of an intense battle to decide the fate of Eorzea, the heroes are transported away before facing certain death at the hands of Bahamut. Finding themselves separated in a brand new world, the heroes begin a journey to reunite and find a way home. However what starts off as a simple quest quickly unfolds into a classic journey of crystals, great evil, and steadfast allies. Before this adventure ends, they will discover the truth behind this strange new world, and uncover the binds that tie it to their own home and beyond.

-30 to 40 hours of gameplay, including a multitude of sidequests.

-Enjoy a faithfully recreated Final Fantasy battle system. Everything is as you remember it from the classics!

-Utilize classic abilities, including commands such as Jump, Runic, Blitz, Mime, Throw, Mix, Blue Magic, Dualcast, and much more, along with new commands and abilities based on other games in the series, such as Draw Out from Tactics.

-Equip Magicites to gain access to powerful summons and customize your stat growth.

-A huge cast of unique playable characters, including several hidden ones.

-Find and use faithfully recreated equipment. Favorites like the Ultima Weapon, Illumina, Brave Blade/Chicken Knife, Offering, and much, much more is all here to find and use to become unstoppable!

-Dozens of sidequests ensure there's plenty to do, with no need for excess grinding.

-Face off against familiar foes and brand new ones, including a nostalgia filled bonus dungeon for those who complete the main story.

-Facing a foe that your current party can't handle? Switch party members anytime, even in the middle of a fight!

-Buy rare and unique items at the Auction House, and battle in the Colosseum!

-Take part in minigames, including fishing and an arcade-style airship shooter.

-Customizable Battle Speed, Battle Mode, and Difficulty will get you the experience you want, be it tough as nails or a more relaxed game.

Playing the game at higher resolution

Hey all! I just wanted to post a link to an upscaler that will let you play pretty much any rpgmaker game at a much higher resolution.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/magpie.mirror/

Download this and follow the instructions, open Magpie, then the game, then press alt+F11. I'd suggest using either the Anime4k or CRT upscalers for LoB. This will let you play the game in fullscreen and it will look really nice!

Meh. It's backasswards, but at least I was able to download it, only to find I had already done so over two weeks ago...the f*ck...(just how do you do it Amelia)

Did you intend to distribute it unarchived? I mean, if you did then it's fine but...

(well it does leave a nice set of scripts for me to look at-and a LOT of them)
Yeah, it's unarchived because the compressing/encrypting it was causing some issues with installation for some people. Doing it this way just made it easier, and if someone wants in an encrypted project it's very easy to do so. I don't mind people checking out the scripts and stuff but I do request that people at least ask if they want to use something I've modified.

Thanks Rydia, but I dont have that either :(

It's obtained in the Crystal Cave, maybe you missed it? And as Firefly said, equipped items won't show up in the inventory screen.

I started to write some kind of walkthrough for this game.
But I just reached Aquaria.
So I can't help you with the Aegis Shield right now.
It is a strong shield. Perhaps you have equipped it to someone.

Wow, a walkthrough! Thank you for doing that, it must be a lot of work! =)
Ah thank you ,and apologies to Firefly84,it WAS being used but I now have the paladin shield, one more thing I would like to know,I went to Port Enaya and Goldbug disappeared where do I find him please,so I can acquire Phoenix

Cancel the bit about Phoenix I found it :)
And now that I'm at Sundiland I don't know what to do again. My attention span is lousy.

Ah. I see. Making sure I actually had the copy you distributed and not a copy someone had decided to distribute without your permission (been there countless times).

As for using anything, I hope RGSS knowledge isn't something I need anyone's permission for lol.

But I believe that at least one script I did find will replace another, more complicated and not really working script. Seriously, why is it so damn hard to bind keyboard keys to extra functions!?

And why ABCXYZLR? If I wanted to play Sega style, I'd play SMS/SG/S32X/SCD. Most RPG games I know use four !six face buttons as well as Start and Select.

◘/x/○/▲/L1/L2/L3/R1/R2/R3 FTW

Of course, Controller > Keyboard to me. Or better yet, wireless RB Strat || wireless GH Drum Kit w/2 Kick Pedals || Roland Midi Drum Kit > any Controller || Keyboard.

Talk to Sundi, then go the Patch Tower, then back to Gradd, than Sundi.
Don't forget the Adventure Guild.
Sometimes, the leaders give you a hint to where to go again.

Oh, that's fine, I've just had some people do things like attempt to copy+paste the battle system or other complicated multi-script systems that I've edited/written scripts/compatibility for. Some people have even complained to me or just flat out said "yeah I took this for my game but it doesn't work, help". That's more what I'm talking about, haha.

As for remapping keys, I kind of regret doing it. I mapped the control scheme to something that console RPG players (dedicated buttons for each function, button placement mimicking FF titles) and PC players (WASD movement) would be more used to, but most of the game's audience is more used to the RM defaults and did not like the changes. :/

Thanks for answering questions so quick! However you'd like to send the guide is fine with me. =)

Generally speaking, if you speak to the last major NPC you met in the story they'll give you a general idea where to go. I've been debating adding a series of "Main Story" entries to the journal that would just point you in the right direction and serve as a brief summary of what's happening, since a good number of people have gotten lost.
@RydiaMist:
Has anyone noticed yet that Karina said "Meilo" when entering the ship for the first time instead of "Mielo"?

And I am playing with keyboard. It is a bit complicated but ok.
You should enter the flee commands (Q & E) in the ReadMe-file for a next patch/update. Or you are in real trouble when fighting the boss in Patch Tower the first time.

I had a crash in the Snowdrop Cave while choosing the aim - I think I overloaded the RGSS-Player somehow. Gladly I saved not too long ago.

That typo is fixed in the newest version, which is being playtested right now, but thanks for pointing it out!

I could have sworn I put that in the readme but I guess not. I think a npc at the school in the beginning mentions it, but I'll definitely add it to the readme, thanks!

Yeah, I've done my best but it seems like rarely the RGSS player just crashes with no script error. I've done everything I can, but I think RM games just do that rarely. I've made sure all sprites/windows are being properly disposed and the cache is being regularly managed, not sure I can do much else. If you ever get a crash with a script error though, that's something I can probably fix so don't hesitate to let me know. =)

The RM defaults (Cancel is also Menu) are fine for most, but yeah...I wanted to have more. Of course, the main thing is to separate Menu from Cancel, but to add keys and functions as well.

I mean, one can simply make :A and :Z function as the back two shoulder buttons (and I often do), but I wanted to change that, if it were possible.

FTR, I normally play PC games with a control setup that has the function keys left handed and the movement right handed (and a lot of people do if they're not using the mouse like for FPS games-for that I prefer a controller though).

Nah, the battle system (I see many script snippets which I imagine correct one to three errors provided by Script A/B/C/X) is something I would rather NOT use; I'd have to know which scripts to take, what order to place them, blah blah blah, no thanks, I don't need ANOTHER headache.

All I really need is a reliable keybinding system, a better way to make Throwing Weapons (I love you Yanfly Skill Cost Manager but this method is sloppy at best), and battler graphics that represent ferocious predators. Two of the three I can get from the scripts that don't involve the complicated battle system.
I may be repeating an older post.
But what is the "Tinfoil Aegis"? I can't find it in my inventar or skills.
Odion gave it to me.

It's just a gag item, it was an oversight that you don't actually get it, but it doesn't actually do anything so you're not missing anything, haha.

Good to know. I will "modify" this in the walkthrough.
I just want to inform that the walkthrough is nearly done.
It could have been done if the RGSSPlayer hasn't crashed while fighting Sakaguchi.
The game crashed so worse that I had to restart my laptop.
But I was able to save my notes first.

Wow, that was fast! Sorry for the RGSS crashes, I wish there was something I could do about that, but it seems to be a problem that only a few people have had and I can't find anything at all that could be causing it on my end. =(

Thank you again for doing the walkthrough! Feel free to PM it to me whenever you're ready and I'll get it posted. =)
Quick question. I was looking at the credits to your game, and I saw this '\a,(C)\FB\C' I know the \C is for colours, but what do the \a,(C) and \FB mean? Are they part of a script? if so, what's the script called?
Great game! The devs did an amazing job!
good game. only thing i found a bit bad was the early game mp. i ran out against the first boss. here is my suggestion: increase early mp while making growth a bit slower. that will solve that out of mp issue.
Hi,

I stumbled on this game by chance. Since its RPG maker work initially I was very skeptic but right after 30 minutes in the game I already loved it. Now after around 34h I can say: you guys had made what a contemporary FF title should look and feel. I'm sure if it was not for the RPGMaker limitations you would have done a real HD quality! As a person that have played all FFs 1-10 I can make a huge list of what you have done right, but I will do it only on a request of the authors.

Here you are few things that need some fixes:
- The name of places in the Journal for quests don't quote the in-game name. For example: Vampire Castle - Undead Castle. That may seems like small things but as a player that cost me like an hour flying around the map.
- Map should show not only visited towns, but all visited dungeons, castles, forests,... that otherwise don't show
- Stealing: a haven't count but actually very few enemies have things for stealing. There were some/many areas that no enemy has something for steal
- Brave Blade bugged? Although the description says that victory increase the power (great idea), unfortunately it work as in FF5 - escapes decrease the power and no way to increase. On top of that it seems that decrease is global - if you escape and reload a save, your stats are permanently reduced.
@Squall
Hey, I'm glad for the most part you enjoyed the game :D Esp since it seems you are a big fan of the first 10 games. There are definitely some RPG maker limitations for sure... but we have tried our best to fix what we can.

Not sure when we will get around to it but we will keep in mind all of the things you mentioned.
- We changed names of a few places mid development, since we don't have the names as variables we had to change everything manually. We will look into changing them to the correct name.
- I thought we did have them all placed on the map at least as dots. Might not have the names but that's simple enough to add if I remember correctly. Will look into it.
- I know Rydia has gone through and added more things to steal, but will look into it if we need to add more. Might just be in a version of our files that we haven't released yet.
- AFAIK braver blade shouldn't be bugged. It takes quite a few battles to raise it again but you should be able to get points. Will look into it but I think you should still be able to stat it up currently. The save thing is a bit concerning, we will look into it as well, but it might just be an RPGmaker issue we can't fix unfortunately.
